As a chemist I would like to congratulate you on your video! Every statement is absolutelly correct! The only thing I can add, is that the gloves should not be reused and need to be changed after about 30 min of usage, because some chemicals will penetrate through the gloves over time.

Use a grow tent. They are designed for tight environmental control and high quality filtering of the air that comes out of them. There's also the added bonus that your neighbors may think you're growing weed and then call the cops. When the cops come and find a 3D printer instead of a tent full of weed, they will leave and not come back, meaning you can now take the printer out of the tent and grow weed in it instead, safe in the knowledge that the cops will leave you alone. It's a win-win situation.

Resins are known as 'sensitizers' which means prolonged exposure can essentially make you allergic. Once you're sensitized you basically are going to be hyper reactive to it, so no more resin printing- even small exposure will produce a strong reaction. The health effects are very serious, but not being able to continue printing might be a larger motivator for some people.
@vogman

Thanks for your input. That's exactly my goal here. I WANT people to enjoy 3D printing, and if we're just a little bit sensible and wear some readily available safety gear, we can all do that for a long time to go. 😁

Good tips and an important video! After more than 10 years of FDM, I have now started resin printing. I quickly realized that a well-ventilated room alone is not enough. In my workshop, I put the resin printer in a box and equipped it with an active extraction system that directs the exhaust gases outside. I still use an additional mask, though. That might be a bit too much, but better safe than sorry.

Nothing is too much when it comes to health safety with chemicals. Especially if you do this every day. I do it for a living, and I wear a respirator mask have two full size carbon filters, 2 smaller ones in the print farm area, vent fans, and fans circulating to help clean the air. Sure there is always exposure, but limit it as much as you can.

Thanks for the video. As a chemist, it's solid advice, and well researched. One thing, tho: as per work safety regulations (in italy, at least), air collection and evacuation from the room is the best safety measure. If you can, 3 m/s at the vapor emission point is perfect.

I havent started yet but my plan is to run a enclosed grow tent, with strong vacuum force via a larger ventilator, all set on the balcony only. This shouldnt endanger neighbors, should it ? I strongly assume the outdoor ventilation is effective enough at dispersing the vapours and particles.

Thank you for the kind words. I always defer to those with more knowledge than myself 😁 I toyed with purchasing one of those cheap air quality gauges off the internet but having read about numerous inaccuracies in them, I decided against it. I've no doubt there's more accurate and no doubt more expensive equipment out there. I can't see many folks opting for ventilation systems that replace the air quickly and efficiently, so I took the cheaper stance of advising folks get a good respirator and open windows. That way even if an appropriate emissions are not achieved, they'll hopefully be safe.

Us Americans can be pretty stupid and overly precautious but in a lot of cases usually more times than not, there is a method behind the madness. The lot of us would like to be and stay healthy. The government just doesn’t let us do it with cheap fast food and over priced groceries, very expensive health “care” (notice the quotations because there’s no care behind it here), amongst other things. So usually when there’s something that we ourselves can prevent, we would like to try our damndest. I wish I could talk about all of us in America but unfortunately only about 60% really take actual precautions the rest just don’t give a damn about themselves or others.

@@abstractfate6104 yeah i understand why Americans are overreacting and its justified, its just counted as "normal" not to care about safety that much where i live. with low standards and economy, companies buy cheap protection gear which is uncomfortable to work with, so people get a habit not to use protection gear. example my friend has car body shop and he doesnt wear mask while spray painting cars, he says "i cant breathe whole day thru the mask, its hard to do physical work with the mask".

The MSDS tell you of the dangers and it is up to us to take proper action to protect ourselves and those around us also. Caution tape to create borders and warning others to stay away. I have purchased the GKTWO resin printer 4 months ago and I am in the process of installing the proper size Inline fan to vacate the fumes and vapor and particulates. And in that article I have a short section where I say it's an absolute no-go to 3D print resins in the same home was your pigeon(s) or other birds for that matter, and that you should never 3D print toys and such for a pet pigeon using resin printers. I'm guessing you won't mind me putting a link to this video in that article's section, because it's truly put together very well, contains many important details and is still explained in a way that most of the people will understand, bravo 👍

@@vogman Well thank you very much😊. Exactly my thoughts😊. We have a rescue pigeon and because pigeons aren't destructive birds (like parrots for example) we can easily make nice toys and even 'pigeon furniture' for her. But like you said, there are definitely safety concerns you need to keep in mind, even with FDM printing especially around sensitive animals like birds. We don't resin print due to all the chemicals involved, the 'mess' and risk with the bird for example. We do have several high detail FDM's but even those need 'special care' and thought to be safe. It's definitely a hobby I love to keep doing for decades, but indeed people do need to be aware of the risks (just like when working with any industrial tools/equipment though). Thanks again for your very detailed video, top quality 😊👍

My overall reply is that your body is the only tool you can't buy spare parts to fix it and the more you abuse it the sh!ttier your life will be when you get older. . Oh and thanks for clarifying about the carbon filters. As a total n00b I was really happy to use them and get rid of that terrible smell but didn't stop to think that removing the smell doesn't mean it's removing the fumes. I will definitely get something to fix that too.

@@vogman since you mentioned the possible impact on the environment, I was wondering if the products degrade like other plastics. Maybe a video idea: what happens when a print gets "overcured"? Leave it in the UV curing station for 24h, 48h, and perhaps compare the exposure to the amount of UV exposure outside (I guess it will be in the ballpark of 24h be equivalent to leaving it outside for a month or two)

Great advice as always Vog! From personal experience, I've had the... interesting experience of accidentally curing resin on bare skin, which produced only a small amount of warmth. I'd be curious to know if different brands have different thermal risks like this (for reference ,this was with Sunlu ABS like). As a rule of thumb, i have a large UV lamp that I use to flash cure my work surface and any paper towels etc when I'm finished with them. Guessing i'll be finding some UV resistant specs to go with that.... I'm also curious to know how much of a barrier/ protection varnishes and paint have with cured resin. Especially with the onset of things like Prusa's resin model colour kit, we might see even more 'bare' resin prints in the future.

The main worry for me is, I live in a pretty small apartment and i've been thinking about getting a 3d printer for a while (stopped months ago, because I have too many unpainted minis) but I'm pretty much 1-2 clicks away from buying one now and I'm in a kinda small apartment, so I can't set this up in a garage or dedicated room ventilation wise, plan was of course to have a good mask when working on the printer, but how would that be if for example if I'm printing overnight. Would it make a difference since I'm guessing you mainly need it for the open resin or IPA, since the printer box is closed when you're printing?

One brave soul here has spoken of how he printed overnight in his bedroom and how he now has brain damage. That really makes me feel reluctant to encourage anyone with space for a dedicated print area to take up this hobby. Don't rush into a decision here. Plan ahead a bit. Could you section off an area for a print tent, maybe, and ventilate that? But if you did, would it potentially get in the way of family, visitors, friends, other hobbies, etc. Think hard. A mask that's removing organic vapours is most likely using activated charcoal: The same ingredient that's in the other filters. So bagging on carbon filters as useless is undercutting your argument. It's the same thing. The main advantage of the mask is that it's in the path of your breathing, so instead of trying to scrub every bit of vapor, it's protection is concentrated on YOU. What SHOULD be mentioned is that : a) Carbon gets saturated, and needs to be replaced. It can only absorb so much before it's full. b) As you mention, the little filters they sell to go inside the printer contain so little carbon that they're not worth bothering with. However, you can easily get a larger carbon filter and fan to cycle air through it. You can find filters with 20lbs or more of activated charcoal; most of them are marketed to the indoor "gardener" of a certain plant. Activated carbon is good stuff. It was in your great-great-grandad's gas mask in the first world war, and kept him safe from mustard gas. It's probably doing a rather good job on the VOCs released by resin. A concern to raise over IPA: The human body tries to metabolize all alcohols by oxidizing them. This is good for ethanol, the main alcohol we encountered in our evolutionary journey to now. It does a crap job with methanol, converting it first into formaldehyde, and then into formic acid, which is ant venom. IPA, when oxidized, breaks into one molecule of ethanol, and one molecule of methanol. If you get enough of it, it's dangerous for the same reason as methanol, because some of it turns into methanol in your blood. It's worth noting that methanol is one of those "the dose determines the poison" sort of poisons. A tiny amount is fine; if it wasn't, you'd get sick every time you metabolized fat. Methanol is a frequent byproduct of ketosis. So your body does tolerate very _small_ doses of methanol; it has to, since it creates them. I thought the vapors coming off a full vat of IPA was concerning enough I've replaced it in my own printing setup with Denatured Alcohol. This is just ethanol that's been adulterated with something to make you never want to drink it; usually a powerful bittering agent or an emetic. Regarding the dangers of UV: Not all UV is the same. The frequency used for resin printing is "UV-A", the lowest energy form of UV. This was regarded as safe in the medical literature, although likely to cause wrinkly skin. We used to think that UV-B was the dangerous one. And if you're unlucky enough to live under a hole in the ozone, or get exposed to pool sanitizer light, you could encounter the most high-energy & dangerous form of UV, UV-C. However, recent studies are calling into question our previous carefree attitude about UV-A. While it's not AS dangerous as UV-B or UV-C, some recent studies have shown that in large enough doses, it can also be a cancer risk. Studies of women who worked in gel nail salons (which is essentially a UV hardened resin) showed that they had increased incidence of cancer on their hands, where they were exposed to high doses of UV-A. So while low doses of UV-A seem to be comparatively low risk, you're right that taking precautions is only sensible here.

Yeah, it's a tricky thing offering advice. Is my print the same size as yours. Is yours tall and thin and mine short and stoat. Did we use the same exposure settings. The list goes on. Honestly, things shouldn't feel tacky. That's usually a cleaning issue. I always try to print at 0.03 instead of 0.05 as (in theory) thinner layers should be better cured than thicker ones. I then rinse in used cleaner (IPA or ethanol), then wash in clean. An ultrasonic cleaner works brilliantly and usually 30 secs to 1 min clean is fine. Then I cure well. Something very small, 5 mins. Something like a miniature, 10 mins. Anything bigger, 30 mins. And you can always leave prints on the windowsill for a few hours. Maybe this cleaning video will help kzbin.info/www/bejne/oX2chXagqbWVrZY 😁

OK, so I'm putting this information out trusting that the internet will correct me if I'm wrong - UV light is 100-400 nm. We call the light we use to cure the resin UV, but it's SUPPOSED to be 405nm, which is near UV, but isn't UV. 405nm isn't harmful to humans. Of course, this assumes that the LEDs are within spec. It's probably prudent to treat it as if it were UV, but it's almost certainly safe.... maybe. Possibly. I have a massive carbon filter in my print room and I've been trying to validate that it's actually doing something but haven't been able to find a reliable air quality monitor that checks for VOCs. It certainly removes odors, but I have serious concerns about it removing VOCs... and I have the same concern about respirators. How do I know when I need to change the filters because they've stopped clearing out the VOCs if they still remove odors?

Exactly what's inside filters of an organic vapour respirator, I don't know, and I desperately hope it's not carbon as that would make everyone look idiots 🤣😂🤣 As for wavelengths, again, I'm no expert. I just got fed up of people writing to me saying, "You can't cure resin through glass. UVs don't travel through glass." Yep, I was taught that at school as well, but the resin sets anyway. So who knows 😁😁😁
@paulpardee
@paulpardee 2 ай бұрын
@@vogman I've also been told that UV doesn't penetrate glass and I think that's partially because "UV" is a very large spectrum - UVB and UVC are blocked by glass, and UVA is at least partially blocked by glass, but not by much. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19614895/ It's absolutely absurd to say "You can't cure resin through glass" when manufacturers are putting tempered glass screen protectors on their printers! :D Edit: On the topic of carbon filters and VOCs - my preliminary results from air quality monitors backs up what you're saying, with VOCs being many times higher in my print room than in the rest of the house. That said, I'm not fully convinced that the readings were correct. Relative to the outside, there were still far more VOCs near the printer, though, which makes me wonder if there's really any way to mitigate the VOCs other than ventilation (which isn't really possible when it's 45C outside for 3 months of the year)

Geoff has earned his leadership among resin printing folk, and when he talks, I listen. I sell tools and Personal Protective Equipment in my day job, and I get many, many customers who work with paints and solvents asking for dust masks, and I have to put them right. What you want is an A1 P3 filter on a proper rubber face mask. A1 refers to protection against organic vapours, and P3 refers to particulates. Some manufacturers have combined filter cartridges, and some have separate vapour and particulate cartridges that piggyback. Moldex is my preferred brand. Fit is everything. If the shit gets sucked in round the sides of the mask when you inhale, it's no good. If you are wearing a mask and you cover up the filter inlets you should not be able to suck in any air. I confess I've been careless till now with resins, but I mask up proper when I'm casting brass because of the evil zinc oxide spewing out of the melt.

Because one guy used it in his living room, and he's not yet dead, so it must be ok, right? I do weep for our waste water treatment plants, with all the water washable resin poured down sinks contaminating the facilities. As far as I can tell, none of the bottles say you *can't* rinse them under the tap, so that means you can, right... The ignorance of some people using these dangerous chemicals is astounding. A lot of the people I've spoken about this to, either don't care, or say it's someone else's problem. The weird thing is, these are industrial grade chemicals, and yet they wouldn't treat other industrial chemicals so lightly, or even allow them into their families home. Much less fear mongering than other videos. I recommend looking up chemistry 101 lab safety basics. You follow that and you will be fine. You have household cleaner chemicals as toxic if not more than 3d resin. UV cure nail polish is basically the same thing.

I do NOT want to stop anyone enjoying this hobby. Quite the opposite, I want them to be around a long time enjoying it. For me this is the best way I can think of to achieve that 😁😁😁 And yes, you're right, other household products have their share of chemical nasties, but I'm reaching out to the printing community. I'll let other channels work on other areas 😉👍

when working with ANY chemicals it's important to use proper PPE with all the safety precautions to manage the risk of using said chemicals basic health & safety 101, do i think this is the next asbestos? NO since asbestosis is life threatening from the tiniest slip up like a pinhole in your mask can be fatal with absolutely no treatment avaliable even if at worst it causes skin cancer it's STILL treatable. do i think these should be sold to the masses YES but they need proper H&S instructions of the hazards & how to mitigate them that way even idiots can operate them safely.

I know for a fact IPA fumes irritate my airway, and I'm not going to wait and see if there are long term effects of exposure! This was a great video to help printers new and old get acquainted with common sense safety, and I appreciate it. One thing you should have in your open window is a fan! Even a cheap window mount fan evacuating contaminants can create a sufficient cross breeze with its pressure to rid a moderately sized room of fumes.

That's the thing, we really notice the IPA fumes, but the resin fumes are the ones that can really hurt us potentially. But yes, ventilation is a must, well done.

These bio low-fume claims are just marketing nonsense. The only company I know of that actually makes such resins is Prusa3D because they are free of TPO and bisphenol and without acryloylmorpholine, which makes them much less harmful to health compared to the regular ones....

Vogman, lots of good advice. But I’m a photopolymer formulator. Let me tell you, it matters a lot what the resin is made of as to how dangerous it is. Use cheap crap, highly reactive crap and guess what- it’s going to get you without serious PPEs. Good quality resin properly formulated is minimally dangerous- similar to paint. (If not, I would have been dead years ago.) But it will cost you an extra fiver a kilo compared to the cheap stuff. No exceptions.

I always defer to the knowledge of an expert. But being a cynic, I always feel companies are more interest in CHEAP production and HIGH profit over BEST product. As such I'm doubtful what most of us buy affordably on Amazon, etc, has the highest possible quality ingredients. I hope I'm wrong 😁

I''m pretty sure, Resin in its liquid form is a pretty nasty substance with many health risks. But so is battery acid or rat poison. I think, resin in it's hardened form is on the same level of danger as every other cast plastic, like polyurethane, pmma or other polyacrylates - which are a part of every resin mixture naturally. And everybody has something out of cast plastics around him and never bothered or even knew. So - yes: Resin in its liquid form maybe bottled death, but if you handle it right, it can't harm you.

I really don't know. I probably have more questions than I'll ever have answers. One viewer above mentioned how they stored prints in a sealed box. Every time that box is opened - whoof - out comes a strong waft of resin. Is that safe when it's the vapours we're advised to avoid?
@marcus_w0
@marcus_w0 2 ай бұрын
@@vogman That is certainly true. I didn't want to dismiss the potential dangers, I think you made a valuable point with your video. I opted to give all my prints a coat of UV resistant clearcoat years ago, just to stop making them brittle with time - maybe this is the reason I never had to bother with fumes after printing. The clearcoat is also food safe, so I technically solve two problems at once - although I never anticipated this as a feature - I'd never eat with a printed spoon from a printed plate.

Mr vog you’re kinda saying “we don’t know” “we aren’t sure” “not enough time has passed” wayyy too much. Literally it’s been a well known fact that the resin used as well as anything it or it’s vapor touches is forever heavily carcinogenic (I.e gloves, clothes, drywall, ac duct, carpet). No one should even have one of these in their home let alone use it in there, we really need to start taking this serious. There is no question, you wouldn’t keep a can of gas in your computer room, why would you keep a jug of this stuff? Everyone’s gotta remember, just because you can’t smell the fumes it doesn’t mean they’re not there, this shit is so gnarly it can offgass through solid plastic

So the thing is all 3D priinting is potentially harmful to your health. FDM, SLS, Resin, Metal, etc, And research is lacking. You should definitely take precautions when printing in Resin. but you should also take precautions if using any 3D printing technology. I agree with the precautions mentioned. But we need to stop only doing PSA about resin and ignoring FDM. As for IPA. That can be really nasty. I used to be a lab researcher and that stuff can mess you up. I know people that have become sensitized to it from prolonged exposure and developed contact dermatitis as well as having a hard time breathing if there are vapors.
