Thank you all for the support and comments. I wanted to try to respond to a few of them here: 1.) The reason the vehicles are all suddenly swerving at the same location is because they are leaving the ice on the bridge at that spot. The ice on the bridge gets the vehicle sliding slightly at an angle, then when the vehicle leaves the ice, the tires regain grip suddenly and send the car in whatever direction the wheels are pointing. This is the two-stage loss of control sequence common with bridge icing: first is the slide on ice, then second is the sudden re-grip sending the vehicle off the road or into a spin (if the wheels are not pointing straight ahead). 2.) Why don't I stand on the side of the highway warning drivers? I've made this statement on my other videos: these are major winter storms where ice is widespread. Authorities are aware of the conditions. In fact, at the Seagoville location, responders were parked right beside this bridge waiting for vehicles to lose control. When one happened, they would respond and block the lane until the vehicle was towed away, then retreat back to the standby position to await the next incident. There are not enough salt and brine crews in this area to rapidly treat everything, so many of the bridges are dealt with in this way. Most importantly, you cannot stand on the side of a highway and warn drivers. I have tried it. It does not work and carries a high risk of you getting hurt or killed. Any police officer, first responder, EMS or firefighter who has experience with working highway incidents will tell you this. Their big vehicles with bright flashing lights are hit all the time in these conditions, now think of a pedestrian trying to do the same! Again, these are large winter storms covering hundreds or even thousands of square miles. The icy spots are everywhere, and the community has tons of warning from the National Weather Service and local media that these conditions are present. I agree that more should be done to help drivers be prepared and know to reduce their speed during these conditions, and that is why I started the icyroadsafety.com web site. You can even help me educate the driving public about winter road hazards ahead of time by sharing that site address.

Moral of the story; If your vehicle sits much higher without a low center of gravity (pick up/trucks) and mostly driven by rear wheels which are essentially just pushing your vehicle instead of pulling it, it’s wise to slow down. Lower vehicles and front wheel drive (sedans) with traction control driving much slower tend to fair better. Also helps not having cruise control on while going downhill on an icy and curvy road.

It's obvious that ice on the road is not the only contributing factor. You can see them all hitting a bump/dip in the pavement just before they lost control. It's always the same spot where it happens, and if you watch closely they all experience a "jolt" just before losing control. So if it was only ice that lane probably would not have problems any more than the other lane, or if it was just a bump/dip and dry pavement there would not be a problem either.

It's hilarious... I grew up in Houston... Every time it iced up, you could just about get out the house to your vehicle without slipping and breaking your neck... Then as soon as folks got in the vehicle, they forgot the walk TO the car, started up and drove as usual.... 80 plus, on someone's a**, swerving lane to lane... And would then wonder why they'd end up sliding and wiping out on 45 South on their way into town. That was 40 years ago. I guess some things never change.

That lane looks like a problem even if it wasn't ice.

I remember driving my F100 stick out to Peru Illinois on I80 during the winter and when I would go through a underpass my truck would loose traction. It would start sliding sideways and then gain traction on the other side. At 70mph is scared the crap out of me. I learned to take my foot off the gas and glide through the underpass. Problem solved.

Interesting how the bad patch seems to pose a greater danger to the rear wheel driven vehicles than the front driven ones, I guess the auto industry's decision to shift power to the front wheels in most cars today is more of a practical one than I intially thought.

I remember when I got spun into the side of a mountain in California I was glad though cuz the other side was an embankment way down that's scary.

There’s many instances that occur on a particular curve. Why don’t they sand that curb when ice is expected.

It doesn't occur to Texans to slow down if there's ice or snow (it happens) on the road. Dallas gone one inch of snow when I was there, and the city was crippled.

Is it my imagination or are most of the vehicles with rear wheel drive that had problems with ice on the road??
