StreetTuner Judging from the last No Limits special event (Snoop Dogg's GT500) You get to keep all the upgrades at the end and they go from a prototype to just regular so you can fully max it out. I don't think you can customize it because Snoop Dogg's GT500 has nothing you can do. Finally I do not have any plan to get a next gen console soon since 1. I'm getting my first car very soon and an Xbox One/PS4 is $400-$500. 2. All of my friends don't have any money to get a Xbox One/PS4 either so if I did get it I would be playing alone... which is no fun for me.

As a 540A owner, I would take the M5 in a heartbeat. I love the fact that it has 4 doors, large boot and has 400HP makes it a winner for me. If you need a mechanic, neither car is going to be for you.

+Arsye I don't buy one because of how (un)reliable they are and because of fuel consumption. In my country, fuel is a factor, because it costs about twice as much as in the US. If not more... And we generally earn half as much money, so that would be a multiplier of 4.

+TechStyle Totally agree with you, I will never change my exhaust because its a very, very fine line between sounding good or like a cheap ricer. Do you have experience with the e46 M3? I ask because most people say they are unreliable, but many owners say different, like you. I personally have never had any issues with mine, and it's a little irritating when I hear people say they unreliable. Can it get expensive if something fails, yes...that doesn't make it unreliable tho, not for me.

rav 545 if you look at any E46 M3 even stock exhaust it sounds like riced out car, only downside to this car it sounds well let's be honest rubbish. listen to the C55 Amg, now that makes an unreal roar however overall m3 is better in that era.

I drive a 2001 M5 with 160k miles and my buddy has a 2002 M3 with 170k. Both are phenomenal driver's cars. His is MUCH faster in autocross(super tight track), but when it comes to backroad driving, the M5 is every bit as quick. The M3 is a precise sports car and the M5 is a four door muscle car. M5 wins on sound and comfort, M3 wins on handling. M5 wins on practicality, M3 on fuel economy. Maintenance is comparable, unless you get the SMG M3, in which case the M3 is more expensive to maintain. M5 will be worth more in a few years. Why? They produced a fraction of the number of M5s and M3s are often driven by younger people who modify and abuse them. Also, as this guy mentioned, most M3s on the market are SMG convertibles which go for less. At the moment they're similar in price, but like the E34 and E36 M5 and M3, this M5 will be worth more. Again, you can't go wrong. I've taken my car to a track day and then on an 9,000 mile road trip the next day. I used to drive for Lyft in my M5 and then take it to autocross events. It's a phenomenal, well rounded vehicle that will put a big, goofy smile on your face everytime you start it up. You can't go wrong with either car.

+im Schwaggy Of course it CAN fit, anything will if you have enough time and money. But it's not as simple as moving an S62 into a 7 series, or an S54 into an e39 (I6). The entire front subframe would have to be reworked, and I'd be very surprised if the chassis rails didn't need to be moved as well.

note: you can swap from an SMG to a manual for a couple grand in parts and probably two weekends. considering the SMG ones were probably not beat on, at least not nearly as much as the manual ones, it might be worth looking for the SMG specifically and just budgeting money and time for a manual swap

I have the e39 & i find it fun to drive, definitely has a sporty feel to it and sounds amazing, also a personal preference is that the m5 engine bay is way bigger and have a lot more room to work with

the build quality of the e39 is amazing we got one with over 170000 miles, it is still in perfect condition and nothing except regular maintenance has been done to the car. It is a 523i A from 1996. About a year ago I had som minor rust fixed on it and the whole car repainted :) now it will last for another 20 years!

Hey, I love your channel! Especially the videos on how to drive a manual. Do you have any advice on how to launch a low HP car quickly? I'm a relatively new driver and I still struggle with that, especially if I want to take a left turn onto a busy main road... If I release the clutch too quickly the car stalls but if I do it slowly I'll never make it onto the main road before there's another car coming...

Hey Vehicle Virgins, great idea about buying advice, but maybe make an episode for each of them. Going through common faults, issues and what to look for. Ideally you could grab two or three of each (M5 and M3) and show the difference between specific options.

the "ostrich" leather inserts on the m5 are actually nappa leather thats stamped with an ostrich print, but the leather is so thick that it never seems to wear out

Good review, I've owned both cars and share your thoughts. For me the perfect car would be a mix of an E46 M3 Chassis for handling and looks with a S62 V8 engine swap for torque and sound.

I chose the e46 for handling, the straight six, coupe and interior styling. (I started with a 2005 325i and a 2001 325ci. Just my perspective. I couldn't be happier with my decision.

There is an E90 M3 at my local dealership with 48,000 miles for 28K. It's in fantastic condition, and I'd love to have it, but no warranty really concerns me. I planned on picking up a new car post-graduation, and my top choice so far was the new '16 Camaro with the RS package and the V6. 0 to 60 in 5.1 seconds stock, decent gas mileage, warranty and of course, it's brand new. Both are at nearly identical price points. The car enthusiast in me really wants to pick up the M3.

I'd argue the e46 M3 is one of the best M cars out there, it was ahead of it's time. In today's world of turbos, it's very rare to see an engine thats all natural pushing over 100hp / liter displacement. The M5 is an amazing beast too, I'd have a tough time deciding if I was in the market for one of these.

I was looking at these cars last year to buy a bmw as a second for fun car, I drove them both and the M3 was amazing, but the M5 felt like a men's car, I wanted an E39 M5 bad but couldn't find one clean enough around me, i finally got advice from a bmw technician with 25 years experience, did what he said and bought a 1997 pre-vanos 540i 6 speed with 90 thousands miles on it, fast enough to be fun with a bulletproof engine.

What's the gas mileage on both cars? Normally, I suppose, it wouldn't be a really big issue. 6s and V8s use more fuel than than 4s. You know that going into such a purchase. However, using premium fuel complicates matters somewhat and adds to the already high cost of ownership.

Plus buying advice, didnt tell us about common problems like the rear view mirrior can burst its fluid in side and need replacing, the ball bearing can go on the alternator and thats about it tbh, the V8 and I6 are bulletproof

M3 sound over the M5 sound? The M5 sound is smooth and aggressive while the M3 sound is raspy and kind of ricey.

The E39 is a collector car whether its the M5 or simply a 5 series. The handling and the engine is great. Find an E39 5 series with the M sport package and manual transmission with M badging on the bottom of the steering wheel and on gear shifter.

The price of the car is one thing but you have to consider the fuel consumption, the insurance and licensing because here in Canada, it cost a lot more in licensing if your motor is larger than 4.0L so i'll prefer the M3 because it will cost all lot less at the end here.
