Had one. Waited on a list for 18 months for it leading up to spring 2000. Best car I’ve ever owned. Here’s a quirk/feature to mention: Everyone who bought one in the U.S. received a 2-day driving class at BMW’s performance center in Spartanburg, SC. All expenses paid but airfare. There they gave you an M5 to use so you could learn what the car could really do from a performance perspective. It was awesome, just like the car. Always regretted selling it.

This much documentation would probably just remind me as the owner that I had a money pit that I should have departed ways with years ago.

Jeff Faller it was most likely preventative maintenance. Refreshing bushings, refreshing the cooling system, trim pieces...etc. Mind you, every oil change, every coolant flush, every brake fluid flush, pad change, etc has been documented since 2000. These cars are rock solid , the current owner didn’t have to do 85% of the things in that binder, but he did. And that’s why Doug is reviewing this specific car.

It's just sad the old cliche "they don't make them likes they used to" is true. The Germans could make a car that goes 500k miles no problem, but that's not good for business. Ferrari only in the 90´s they start to install automatic transmitions exclusivelly for american market it makes no sense only having brakes to control a powerfull car ,in the 70´s even the F1 cars had clutch and shifter ,now only shifter .i was thinking a powerfull car without shifter would feel like a go kart for kids ,regards

I've got an E39 M5... and an early 6-speed manual E60 530i. I think that the E39 530i probably is the best all rounder ( I had a manual E39 528i earlier ). Swapping the 5-speed manual for a 6-speed would improve the E39 even further but I love the straight-6 E39s.

@lewis72 Жыл бұрын
@@Phoenix_1991 I'd certainly stick with the E39 530i. Apart from the acceleration, you're getting almost everything in the 530i that you'd get from the M5, plus the 530i is much easier to fix yourself and that M54 engine is rock solid. Afterall the concept of meaning is something we literally made up to FEEL BETTER. Sex does the same thing it makes you feel better. The approach is very different and the side effects aswell. A German joke: Why put cup holders in car. You don’t put steering wheel on kitchen table. (Puffs from cigarettes)
@computiNATEor4 жыл бұрын
fleetfighter Yup. There are three ashtrays in this car. One in the center console, one each in the rear door pockets (taking up space). For the 01 model year, BMW removed the rear “cup holders,” so the M5 has more ashtrays than cup holders.

That must be a typical American thing, cupholders. Overhere in Europe we don’t care about cupholders that much.

I had E39 for a year. It is an amazing car. No car feels like it. I had only 2.4 litre I6 engine, but it was a beauty. I will forever miss that car.

I've owned 3x e39s, they're incredible. I've owned Porsches and high end Mercedes but the e39 is on another level

If I were to own a BMW, I would definitely have either an E39 M5 or an E46 M3. Both of those lineages reached a peak in those respective models
