Novgorod detinets. Why detinets and not the Kremlin?
In Russia, the city had its own fortifications in the form of an earthen rampart, a rear or a wooden wall; inside the city there were not only defensive structures, but also religious and residential buildings,
and in the center there was a fortress that played the role of the last refuge for citizens during the siege. This fortress was called Detinets, i.e. it is the old name of the central defensive structure in the city.
Subsequently, this name was replaced by the term "Kremlin",
It was first found in the chronicle of 1317 during the construction of the Tver Kremlin, but it has remained in the Novgorod-Pskov sources up to the present day.
The Kremlin, located on the left bank and this part was called the Sofia side, got its name from the St. Sophia Cathedral,
but the right bank, where the auction was located, was called the trading side.
Let's start with the Kremlin itself (a hackneyed tourist route, but being here we can't help but show the Kremlin) and one of the unique monuments reflecting the thousand-year history of Russia. The monument was erected in 1862 in honor of the millennium with
dates of the Vikings' vocation. It is from this time that the Russian statehood takes its countdown.
I will not describe this monument, the Internet is full of information about it. Just admire them. Its uniqueness is certainly off the scale.

St. Sophia Cathedral was built in 1045 - 1050 . (consecrated in 1052) by Prince Vladimir Yaroslavich, son of Yaroslav the Wise.
Byzantine architects were called in to build the new Sofia, who built this church for seven years. Sofia Tsaregradskaya served as a model for them in part
The Magdeburg (Sigtun) gate on the west side of St. Sophia Cathedral has served as the ceremonial entrance to the cathedral for several centuries.
According to legend, this gate is a military trophy of the Novgorodians who sailed to the Swedish capital Sigtuna in 1187. The gates were made by Western European masters.
This explains the Catholic, not Orthodox, nature of the relief images with which they are covered. There are also images on the gates of the master casters who made them , Rikvin and Weismuth . Between the figures of German masters is placed the figure of the Russian master Abraham, who assembled these gates from plates on which the gates were disassembled for transportation.
The northern bastion, called Nikolsky, is now known as the "Merry Hill" or "Pyatak". In Soviet times, there was a city dance floor here.
By the way, it's not strange, but there is no Ferris wheel in Novgorod. In Soviet times it was, but then in the 90s it was dismantled due to dilapidated structures. In 2016, an investor appeared who
just wanted to install a new 35-meter wheel on a Merry Hill. The natural elevation would help the Ferris wheel dominate the Kremlin, St. Sophia Cathedral, belfry, which was excellent for those who wanted to see
a bird's-eye view of Veliky Novgorod. On the other hand, the Ferris wheel would block the view of the Novgorod Kremlin and violate the integrity of the historical landscape. In general, this project was not approved and the city
remained without a Ferris wheel.
