Hello, thank you for this video. Please do a ballistic test of the British Mk6a helmet as well (not the older Mk6), as these Mk6a helmets are one the models that my country (UK) has sent to Ukraine's armed forces. It would be great to know if we are actually giving them appropriate kit and no one else has posted a ballistic test video on this model!

When we got issued our Virtus helmets, the troops engaged in the usual shenanigans and found that with a strong headbutt the helmets would crack apart. Thus everyone (not actually familiar with how helmets and body armour react to different kinds of impacts) assumed the helmet would in no way be able to stop a bullet. Glad you've cleared that up for us!

The Virtus program was a competition between several companies with competing package, and the reason why the British went with this Revision helmet, tis’ the overall price tag of Source’s package. The MK7 was a UOR, where they took an existing helmet shell (the AC900) used for law enforcement and counter terrorism, and gave it a different chinstrap system and bolted on the liner (commercial versions of NPA helmets aren’t bolted). With it being a commercial shell, it’s no surprised that it performed better than the Revision helmet. The Revision helmets aren’t 3A or anything close to it - They were essentially purchased as frag helmets if you go by the tender. Not all specs are public, but by the looks of it the passing criteria was 575m/s minimum V50 with chisel nose FSP.

They’ve been around since WWII when Germany started using them to be able to pop their heads up out the trenches and still survive. But it was a piece of steel that either was welded, tied or hung on cams. Them choosing to wear them was due to their environment and threat level. So we’re talking about bottles lumber piping so they wore them to allow them a little more head protection. But I honestly hate how ppl test helmets it’s unrealistic and you’re purposely causing it to fail. Most of the time head shots aren’t squared up with it and close enough to shake hands. The rounds normally deflect off the curve of the helmet and the round has lost and continue on losing energy making less of a impact.

@V3RTIGO222
@V3RTIGO222 Жыл бұрын
Polyethylene is a great protective material so long as you aren't concerned with back face deformation... With helmets, that's a big no-no... With squishy chest ribs that can take significantly more blunt trauma, that's not so bad given the weight savings. I believe that there's a few new materials on the market that are more protective than kevlar while boasting significantly less weight and bulk, making the package lighter and more protective... That said polyethylene is a very easy, cheap material to mass produce, but ultimately won't be as protective as titanium alloy or hybrid material helmets
@SuperAWaC

@@SuperAWaC that and the combination with kevlar against the spall, maybe? Outer shell PE over thin steel with kevlar-backing/more PE?
@V3RTIGO222
@V3RTIGO222 Жыл бұрын
@@SuperAWaC Honestly the problem with steel is if it does deform it is permanently deformed, and harder steel will splinter and fragment... that and the additional weight. Generally ballistics has shown that ideally you want to break up the projectile and catch the less energetic fragments which significantly reduces both penetration and back-face deformation. Placing a hard surface on the rear effectively means that the softer front offers little to no resistance in slowing the projectile, and ultimately reduces overall protection when the projectile or it's fragments goes through. I think a very hard but thin carbon/tungsten ceramic wedge, polyethelene layer, titanium sheet, then a more modern kevlar equivalent could be the most ideal method for stopping high energy, high penetration rounds. Titanium notably results in ricochets (more than steel even) but also offers more protection at a lower weight and PE is rather good at catching spall. By disrupting a round through different materials you typically have a greater loss in overall energy, standoff plating on tanks uses a similar principle but relies on air gaps to give the projectile more room to destabilize and saves on weight while adding bulk.
@Bagginsess

Titanium alloys with graphene trauma pad is the future. Look up that titanium shield that Edwin Sarkissian shot with a .50 BMG, a thinner version of that should be light enough for a rifle rated helmet.

I can understand why some may have concerns about the results here, but the fact is that the test does not replicate what the helmet is supposed to do. Military requirements are that the helmet has a specified V50. Once test samples demonstrate they can meet this, then they pass as suitable. The Virtus helmet passed this easily. It is designed to stop shrapnel to a set size and velocity as this is the main battlefield threat.

it seems that polyethylene with aramid is the sweetspot for weight and protection.

I have said it many times but UHMWPE by itself is a terrible helmet material. I think that if it is layered along with aramid fibers like kevlar or dyneema it could be great if held togeather with the right resin, but unfortunately companies are not doing that and they are actively staying away from the topic of backface deformation.

I'm really wondering if steel plates have a place on helmets maybe, could it be possible to redesign a helmet to be supported partially on the shoulders like a cowl?

I've toyed-around with the idea of helmets having a neck-brace-like collar to pair with, which puts the weight of the system into the shoulders rather than the neck, allowing for more material to be used in the helmet without as much concern for weight. The idea came to me from competitive jousting helmets which prevented spinal and concussive injuries in tournaments back in the late middle-ages. Considering that current fighting doctrine around individual movement demands the combatant present themselves square to the enemy to provide ample coverage of body armor; I could imagine specialized units being trained to wear more cumbersome and movement-limiting armor for quick surgical engagements such as hostage rescue or boarding ships at sea, wherein the comfortability of the combatant isn't a priority of equipment selection, as they won't be in the field wearing such equipment for extended periods of time.

I dont think this will be a very popular option as its very common for people to assume the prone position during a firefight! This would be very uncomfortable. In addition to having to wear a heavier bit of kit, you could be out in the field for days or weeks depending on your role.

With today's technology one would think we would have a modern steel hybrid helmet that could cope with at least a 308 winmag hitting it.
