Great tour and well thought out layout. After 40 years in commercial aviation I can tell you that 40 years ago if a cb popped in flight we would attempt an inflight reset. After a few fatal accidents the industry changed its thinking. In almost any situation loss of one electrical circuit is not crucial and at best resetting a breaker in flight regains convenience, at worst resetting a popped cb can start a fire in flight and kill all on board. Unless there is an obvious reason for a popped cb such as something catching a manual cb and physically popping it the cb is never to be reset in flight. A crew can use its emergency authority to reset a cb in flight however there would need to be a very good reason. Tech ops (mechanics) might suggest an inflight reset however I have never seen that after 21,000+ hrs of flight.

Good tip. Only time I had a cb pop was early on on the alternator, which may have been because it was never properly grounded. I'll keep this tip in mind, thanks!

Just so you know... The Dynon "Go Around" function won't disconnect the autopilot... It'll actually start a preprogrammed climb rate and post a message reminding you to add power. Fully coupled go arounds are possible. Great showing of the aircraft. Thanks!

I love to see so much 3D print utilization. I have 3D printed so many little switches and knobs for my schools Redbird full motion sim which has been fun, but I can’t wait to build a plane one day. Leaning towards a velocity now that I’ve seen your designs! Great work!

Maybe someday, we will own a Velocity XL with the following: *dual side-sticks *T-handle throttle *BRS *VG's *Digital Engine monitoring System *Couple of G5's *Latest and greatest in sound/vibration dampening insulation *My own EDFJ hybrid power-plant design (When and if charging stations become as as common as fossil fuel pumps, will be a 100% EDFJ...not a hybrid) That's about it...for now.

rockerswitchpros.com/ I ordered them with text and image on one side, and a line of text of ASCI characters on the other (a box like this I think ) to make the line. And I think I had to flip the text upside down to make it work. They have a lot of customization options. The switch is just a Carling rocker switch. You can order them from almost anywhere. I had to 3D print a switch cover removal tool though, since it's $5 online.

Heard a few Velocity builders putting in LS3 engines. One thing about them is you can get heat easier for your cabin. Wondered if that was a thought.
@drampadreg13862 жыл бұрын
Velocity do have electric heaters, you don't need to pump any hot oil. Beautiful planes, getting more efficient every year too.
@Rassah2 жыл бұрын
The oil one is pretty sufficient. It's there anyway by default. Since the engine is in the back, there's not enough airflow to cool the oil in the radiator back there, so the oil needs to be routed to the front radiator where it can get plenty of cool air on it. The bypass for heating is just extra.

1. Did you build this yourself and how long does a build take? 3. Lots of 3d prints, did you 3d print them to save money and customization or do they also sell the missing pieces? Thanks!
@RassahАй бұрын
Built it myself. I was doing it at the factory with their guidance and tools, so it took me one and a half years from fast build kit to test flight. Then another year for testing, fixing issues, painting, and interior. I 3D printed for convenience and customization. They have a different overhead panel, but not the rest of the things.

Hello Mr Michael A question: what should I have licenses to fly it. Is PPL, IFR, MER enough for that?

PPL is plenty enough
@agriculturalsides95612 жыл бұрын
@@Rassah in single engine case, but what about Velocity twin?
@Rassah2 жыл бұрын
@@agriculturalsides9561 Still PPL. But for Velocity XL you'll need a high performance rating if it has a constant speed prop with a powerful engine, and for a V-Twin you'll need a multi- engine rating. Both are just add-ons for your PPL that just need a bit of extra training.

I love all of the 3D prints! Makes it real easy. What are your plans for interior coverings? Will the front panel get a covering as well? It appears a little rough in some close ups. Have always thought of building an XL but it was put on hold after moving to a backward country in the EU in the southeastern Med., seems they are the only country that does not allow Experimental home built aircraft. I guess they don't have decent mechanics available to do inspections but considering I am the builder and its my butt on the line, I don't leave any stones unturned. Keep up the excellent work!
@Rassah2 жыл бұрын
I plan to keep the panel as its. Only the dash cover, center console, and part under the panel are getting covered. Leaving the painted fiberglass visible to show its "roots" same as the uncovered 3D prints. I'm moving to EU with this thing too, but I may just end up registering it at some other country from where I live

How did you add the joy stick controls?
@Rassah2 жыл бұрын
Not sure I understand the question. The joystick themselves are sold on Aircraft Spruce and are standard size for airplanes. The sticks they attach to come with side stick kit from Velocity. The wiring is described in the joystick manual, and was soldered to the internal switches and then wired to various inputs on the avionics

I LOVE the overhead switch panel, I've always thought those were just so cool. My only question is about the mags. Why did you choose to put them there? Not criticizing, because I'm certain you've spent HOURS AN HOURS obsessing layout and format. This is my dream bird, so I'm very interested.

Just seemed like a natural pattern. Like reading left to right. First line is battery then alternator. Next line is fuel pump, left mag, right mag, then start. Makes startup easy and straightforward

Why didn’t you use red or red/white led lights for your overhead lighting? That way you wouldn’t loose your night vision with the bright white lights but still have the white available in daytime situation if needed.
@Rassah4 жыл бұрын
I thought about it, but decided if I wanted red light in flight I would rather use my headset. The three LEDs in the front are also fairly dim but still provide plenty of light. This is more for getting in and out of the plane on the ground, and in case I REALLY need to see something inside.

Looks great, really nicely done. Good use of 3d printing here. Are you planning on adding trim and carpets etc?
@Rassah4 жыл бұрын
Eventually, yes. There's still some work to do inside, and after the fist 150 I plan to take apart the keel to verify that everything is doing okay in there and not rubbing or jostling. Easier to do without the carpeting.

Besides 'space', curious why you opted for Side stick? ...I'm thinking, its b/c all your controls can be accessed with Right hand, nothing else for Left
@Rassah4 жыл бұрын
@@NightSky777 Space was the overall big one. It's easy to put sticks on the side and complex throttle/prop/mixture levers in the middle, vs stick in the middle and throttle quadrant on each side. Usually those end up being push/pull rods that I don't really like, and I don't think the factory even has a "default" method of putting them on each side vs side sticks. I wanted to have the plane flyable from either seat.
