I feel like there’s absolutely no downfall in learning how to alternate, but if you’ve played for many many months only single-tapping, alternating is extremely harder to learn. One of the main problems people say alternating has is not being able to stay in rhythm, but that’s just the learning curve imo. Maybe it’s just personal preference, but I believe alternating is overall better 👌

I'm one of those people that have been single tapping my way up the Osu difficulty, however I am now stuck because I can't do streams. My plan is to go back to the very beginning and start with easy songs and forcing myself to alternate, to then eventually get back to the level I am at with single tapping.
@CodecFTW6 жыл бұрын
MeowSaysMe Unfortunately , i have the same issues especially with 200+ bpm I single tapped from 4 years but then when I started playing 5* and higher and those tech maps it’s really difficult to keep up with the bpm with single tapping and it’s really hard to maintain consistency and stamina as it’s really exhausting to do a 4-5 min map with like over 9 AR+ and 200+ bpm some parts are extremely hard to keep up with especially the triples on curves as you really have to start those triples and double bursts with your dominant finger so yeah, in conclusion alternating is a must if you wanna go on high levels of this game , you have to do it all over from 3 star maps up again and it’s gonna take a while.

Single tapping is useful for starters. But the problem as the map goes harder and faster your single tapping skills is at disadvantage due to either can't catch up anymore. That's the reason alternating should be learned early, same as single tap if you want to train both type of tapping.

Something in this video that I don't think was emphasized enough was recommending whatever works for you. Everybody is different, some people can single tap super fast without much time needed training, some people can naturally alternate without having a dominant finger. Other people will require many hours to do one of or both of these things. Personally I single tap almost all maps, but have little issue full alternating if I feel like doing so. I started playing Osu July of 2018 and I was using mouse only up until around February of 2019. I naturally was only single tapping until I got to bursts and streams but the fatigue was just awful and there were maps where I just couldnt single tap fast enough. I wondered if I should start practicing alternating. By sheer coincidence this video comes up in my recommended box and after watching I decided I should approach this "hybrid alternation" playstyle. It was a serious struggle and it was only up until around August I got alternating down and I could even do long jumps while alternating. Of course naturally id get better over time, but as I was practicing alternating, my skill and accuracy was sky rocketing. In a matter of just a couple of months I was at like 400k and then I hit 200k. Now having this playstyle more polished, Im only 4k from being a 5 digit. So I credit this video to vastly helping my improvement and overall enjoyment of the game. So for that, I must thank you :)

Bro... I've been alternating from the begging and im actually trying to learn how to single tap. Here you are telling me alternate is better. I feel like a clown.

Just hybrid alternate.

im a mania player but ive been trying to learn how to be more consistent at alternating in standard for a while now, and something ive noticed is that playing more handstream/generally dense stream maps in mania helps a lot with gaining consistency in tapping in standard, i still normally singletap because i dont have too many issues with finger control or stamina, but i have very bad raw speed so i can only singletap up to 220bpm, so playing trilly mania patterns often helps me a lot with getting accuracy on streams and jumps too fast to singletap

As a second generation alternater (with a holy wacom intuos cth-480 passed down to me by a washed up 4 digit player), it still took a month or so to get it right. Once you get it right though, you will feel a big improvement and your finger control while alternating will skyrocket. Alternating *isnt* about your muscle being accustomed to it or having trained muscles on your secondary finger. It is all in your head, which means once you learn to be able to instinctively alternate, you will be able to alternate with any two fingers on that hand.

I started off alternating and now I just cant bring myself to do anything else, I don't understand how people are able to single tap anymore.

commenting 2 years later, i started playing standard more (mainly osu!mania player) and have no problem single tapping and/or alternating. So I think that mania helps, for those that struggle learning it

Just my own playstyle as a beginner (like 1.3 million rank) I believe the best way to Alternate is to hold down the button you pushed regardless if it is a singletap; therefore, when you need to jump, you just need to alternate to the other finger whilst letting go of the already-pressed finger. This emulates single-tapping on both fingers; however, this style is mostly applicable to low-star beatmaps. When doing bursts, it'll often be easier to mess up due to the shittapping of not building a conscious 2-tap switch or 3-tap switch or even 4-tap switch or even letting go at the end of a burst where you move onto a slider.

ive used alternation since day one. the really good thing about it is that you always have one free finger to tap the next circle when the other is busy recovering from the last one

I used to single tap, then when I got to hard maps where I'd run out of stamina from it I ended up taking a year long break from Osu. Now, I always alternate, and I have enough control after about 2 weeks of relearning muscle memory using AutoPilot to end Happppy Song (the first one, with the stream replaced with sliders cuz I know I can't do the stream and it dropped my acc a ton) with exactly enough inputs per finger and 82% accuracy which is improving every day. My though process is: if I don't care which finger I press, it doesn't matter how fast the song is or how complex the pattern. My goal is literally to have my fingers always able to keep up, and never panic spam. I went from 75%acc with 80x misses on Happppy Song to now having 82%acc with 20x misses. I also went from about 635 inputs per finger to 615, and with the modification I added to a separate difficulty I should have 615 per finger. I can definitively see that I have gained control, so personally, I would recommend alternating. Replay easy maps until you always alternate, then increase difficulty until you end up with too many inputs. Keep trying at that difficulty till you get consistent alternation, and you'll find you can do way, wayyy longer maps with consistent accuracy in no time. Plus, not having one finger get tired and lock up is really nice.

I started with mouse for like a week max, I don't really remember, then I started Z X and I just *always* alternated , never singletapped, until I tried it today, had misses I never had with alt, and fatigue, didn't hit ez notes sometimes, but mostly not that bad tho, I'm just going to stick with alt A D

Actually the most effective method is alternating 4 ways between the keyboard and mouse buttons, get it right.

Ive been playing Osu for 8 months and ive first started with Singletapping... however I'm starting to regret it because i cant do streams that well and when i try doing Alternate i always end up doing singletapping. So im going to try to restart Osu as an Alternate and hopefully ill improve well.

I am relatively new to the game aswell and after I started playing low three stars I realized that I can't singletap bursts. So I started full alternating, because I thought that's what every top player does. I learned it really fast and now (playing low to mid 4 stars right now) I can only full alternate, which is kinda sad I think.

I am a single tapper, and had the problem of running out of Stamina with burse streaming maps that last 8-10 mins on end, but I overcame this by training both my finders on single taping (not to be confused with Alternating) as one of my fingers gets tired, I switch my other finger to be the dominant run, and in rare times, use a completely different if both fingers are tired, and I need it for a last resort / push

I'm glad I was playing full alt since day one. Being a pianist makes osu very easy sometimes

As someone who has alternated since the very beginning, I don't know if there's a correlation, but I've always been better at streams than jumps. Although I still deffinitley have one finger get more fatigued than the other.

What I have been trying to learn is single tapping but use my middle finger halfway through then when I can, switch to my index finger so I don't continuously miss at the end
@stevenbojilov5965 жыл бұрын
Full alternation is what I do and it is great. High stamina, fast taps, and it is easy to learn. K1, k2 and repeat. Jumps are super easy since you already know what finger is next. Heck I have no clue what finger I am using. Hybrid Alternating runs the problem of reading. If you have to read that single jumps are coming up that slows you down. If Dull alternations biggest con is its learning curve you should learn it now because I believe it is the best method.
@socialfox8061 Жыл бұрын
usually I will alternate on sliders so my main finger does the slider and I leave off on the non dominant one , for jumps I will just use one finger or if I'm losing pace I'll occacionly hit the second to catch up for the lack of speed for the first finger, when it comes to going into a slider if i notice that it would start on my non dominant finger than i will just tap one extra so i break alternating but i get the favorable stream setup, and for streams just alternate

i use my keyboard for single taps, I add B for alternating, and I use mouse buttons when I need to scratch my body. though I still use z and x sometimes.

I don't know if it's just me, but i used to just single tap, that was for a year or so. Then i took a 4 month break because i lost interest but i rekindled it and got back. It became very obvious that i wasn't a woodpecker and couldn't singletap my way out of everything. I then tried alternating, sure it was hard, but i became very good at it within a few days. I don't really see the learning curve. Of course, this is my own experience and not anyone else but I don't see why people have such a hard time with it, just practice with a map a star under your usual and work your way up
@jespersamuelsson55073 жыл бұрын
I would say as a full alternate player, alternating is also much harder to learn triples and streams. This is because single tappers just keep clicking the rhythm they did before the streams and when streaming they just alternate fingers with the exact same rhythm of their dominant finger, so it is very easy to know how to click twice as fast. However for alternate players we don’t have a finger for speed reference, we just have to click what we think twice as fast alternation would be, which is pretty abstract.
@cloudybrains3 жыл бұрын
True, but I think learning to stream at the proper pace is important anyway for playing maps with variable bpms and tricky maps in general.

I usually overcome the fatigue problem by changing the finger midsong and just continue singletapping with the other finger. I don't know if this playstyle has a name, I just kinda did it forever and never thought about it very much, it just suits me good.

I only have a couple dozen (if maybe) hours on osu! and I started by single-tapping. But idk if I pushed myself too hard or I have bad wrists but quickly, as I progressed to high 3/low 4 stars, my wrists started to develop some problems. That's when I decided to learn alternating. My suggestion to you, if you have the same issue I do, is to alternate. It helps in the future and doesn't strain your wrist as much. Also, try to not tilt your wrist upward 90 degrees, try to do the opposite.
@AndryuK175 жыл бұрын
Now I'm glad that I started alternating since I started to play osu! If I try to singletap I will get distracted so I just let it flow and alternate everything, my biggest problem is the stamina when I'm trying streams on higher diff maps

i watched this video when i had less than 10h of gameplay. I decided to start alternating, now i have 200+ h gameplay and ive evolved somewhat of a "starting" finger. Its in quotes because its the default starting finger but both my fingers are equally powerful.
