I was recently looking on Amazon to understand what e bikes might be good for a a prepper. There are 20 pages of bikes! There were a few e trikes and I liked the HUGE storage capacity they offered. I found a lot of them had racks front and back while some had panniers. The battery amps are not all the same, so watch for that. Some bike are foldable and would fit in a trunk or locked in the back of a pick up truck. They would be the perfect get home vehicle. Although I doubt they would be EMP proof.

Hi. Prices vary. Get something with a rear hub, or even a center hub by the pedals. The rear hub is the motor that pushes u. Try to get a higher wattage or torque 500-750 is good. Try not ** to get a battery mounted on the back** not above the rear wheel. The extra weight in rear will cause unbalance & bike mte. Shimmy a bit while carrying a load, or going faster. Everything..should be balanced. Next, usage. There are excellent folding bikes with 20 in. tires. And ppl. Of all heights can ride them. My options because im short. I need something lighter weight, something that can fit in my car securely. Thats why...folding ****. Next, can battery be removed for charging easily. And can u purchase a replacement battery. I live on second floor. Theres absolutely no place to secure it. Ive had bikes stolen. Even after being very secure. My last bike, someone tried to steal, pulled out the quick release for the tires and it was vandalized.🙄 u must think about functional. The smaller bikes can be used by all heights. Are strong, & maybe used on dirt trails. Im a long distance user. And like the options of light weight & security. So i can power/walk it up a flight of stairs. Youths can use it to run errands or run to friends etc. All*** must wear helmets. If u don't have the right colors. U can put a vinyl Wrap ** for under 20.00. Also. The 4in. Tires mte. Slow ya down, im sure u can put a 3 in. Wide tire instead. But ask the dealer. The monster bike mte. Not fit a 3 in. Tire. Best of luck. And happy pedaling. 👍🏜 also repairs. Check to see if your local bike shop can adjust, repair. ***

My advice buy a bicycle with a chain and one with skinny tires like a touring bicycle. Not only are they more comfortable they're more reliable than any current ebike. Most if not all current ebikes are made in China. Taiwan bicycles have a great reputation however Chinese bikes not so much. Then there's the battery system and drive system of these ebikes some have mid drives some have wheel motors. Lastly the weight of these bikes most weigh in over 50lbs. Meaning if you run the battery out and down to 0% then you're pedaling a 50lb bike home. My bike weighs around 25lbs empty add some front / rear panniers and I can have nearly all my kit with me. Granted I have to pedal it. Fully loaded with my panniers and the bike weighs in 110 lbs before I sit on it. With empty panniers I can ride to the store about 30 miles away one way for me, fill my panniers with enough food to feed me for a week. If I use the front panniers then it's two weeks of food. Of course a ebike is fun to ride since it's basically a e motorcycle.

This is a very needed discussion and am looking forward to more on this important subject. Am familiar with off road mountain pedal and gas bikes but have only seen a very few off road electrics and never tried one for uses. Want one of these modern electric bikes but as of yet there are no rough tough three wheelers I can afford. Am old and where as in youth was more than competent on off road bikes old age and past illness means I need that third wheel. Every prepper should at the least have a pedal mountain bike with spare parts but if remote nd solar then electric is way to go. Pedal mountain bikes used for hunting in hilly back country unimproved roadless quickly seperates those In good shape from others In SHTF you will more than likely be packing black gun rifle, pistol, knife, water and energy bars and if stocking up or selling food, a back pack. They sell saddle bags and even mini trailers to pack extra gear but while a bike can hold 300#'s and you weigh 180 an extra 80 pounds of dead deer makes peddling a mountain bike very, very, very, huffnpuff tiring. An electric even as assist will be better but spare parts and especially an extra battery a must. If not a deer how about two 50# sacks of animal feed or weeks month groceries.

Good reviews on the e-bikes. These bikes can come in handy with day to day short errands around town. I live in a small city of 100,000+ in the Greater East Bay in Northern California. I have an attached Schwinn Day Tripper bike trailer to increase my cargo load when doing shopping around town. This helps me save on gasoline especially at today's prices (@$6.45/ga). I've seen more and more people use e-bikes in my city of about 29 sq.mi. since it makes sense. Public transportation is very limited. I use solar to charge up our e-bikes and e-scooters at home . Makes for good practice and savings on the electric bill too. Looking forward to your next review. Thanks.

I go mountain biking every weekend, sometimes 3-4 times a week. It’s part of my PT. You can buy kits but you have to be careful what kind. Type 1 and type 3 are pedal assist and aren’t allowed in most trails. Type 2 is basically a dirt bike with a throttle, which is only allowed on the street. There’s only limited space where they are legally allowed to be ridden out doors. People claim they tear up the trails quicker due to the increased weight, yet people are allowed to ride horses on some of these same trails as well.
@davej74582 жыл бұрын

35-80 mile range is more than enough to get from my property & into town via back roads. Just wondering how hard it is to pedal if the battery does die on you. I'm thinking it would probably be easier to get off & push it home. Seems like a good idea over all but, it might be wise to keep them in an outbuilding away from the house. The lithium batteries can (in rare cases) burst into flames & it's a very intense fire if it does. There are cases of house fires that were started by E-Vehicle battery failures.
@markmitchell5902 жыл бұрын
If that's a serious concern you're better off converting a regular bike to an e-bike. Pretty much all e-bikes sold compromise on components and weight to support a battery and motor, so they suck without assistance. Also, if you want more range, getting a second battery is much cheaper if you self-build.
