I have no firsthand experience with stuff like Lunchables (because my dad loved me). That being said, I am very curious as to what the deal was with those weird-smelling mess-kits aimed at every kid from the 90s onward. Lunchables and Gogurt may be a great place to start.

As someone who grew up in a poor family, I can personally vouch for home cooked meals being cheaper than frozen/prepackaged. Frozen foods are pretty expensive, actually. It's because they have to be shipped in a freezer truck. After thanksgiving, you can turn the turkey bones and some of the leftover meat into GALLONS of soup. Fun fact. The christmas ham? Save that bone. Buy some dried peas, you've got a delicious pea soup. Serve that up with some grilled cheese...

I can't believe people think you're being pretentious and belittling people who eat the kinds of foods you review. I always figured that the show was just taking a closer look at processed foods, showing that there are better alternatives, sometimes for less money. I don't see how that's a stab at people who eat these foods. It's just food, anyway.

TheWolfePit I agree I got the opposite impression from your channel. You have plenty of meals that arent expensive, like pasta dishes or dishes with cheap cuts of meat. Folks commenting about "poor" folks needing convenience foods are idiots. Two main reasons: Convenience foods are EXPENSIVE, not cheap. Anybody that has ever shopped knows this. Second, they don't eat this because they are poor, they eat it because they are lazy. And because they are lazy, they are probably poor. I love your videos and I think they are a valuable service. I appreciate you going to the trouble/expense to do them in addition to your time. Thanks.

Great series! Just to point out there are 8 potential sources of MSG in this product! Namely yeast extract, cheese culture, hydrolyzed soy protein, hydrolyzed wheat gluten, disodium inosinate, disodium guanylate, natural flavor and soy sauce! These contain free glutamates and the disodium guanylate/inosinate are flavor inhancers similar to MSG which work synergistically with MSG to boost the 'umami' flavor. This product also contains propylene glycol (commonly used as vehicle antifreeze and airport runway de-icer) and yellow 5 which is made from coal tar and contains arsenic, cadmium and also causes cancer! Yum!
@TheWolfePit7 жыл бұрын
I figured I'd missed some hidden MSG sources, thank you for pointing them out! YUM to the propylene glycol! Unbelievable!

Because I have diverticulitis, most of these processed meals literally makes me sick to my stomach. I had to learn to make most of them from scratch. What a lot of people don't realize is that if you make them from scratch, it's usually cheaper and you get more food for your buck.

I have found that if I stick with as close to natural as possible I end up feeling well in the long run. I will not tell you about the one fast frozen food that I do enjoy eating because I do not want you to tell me what I am really eating. It is simple, close to natural, fills me up for the day and I lose weight if I do not fall for my wife's cooking too. She cannot eat the same meal twice in one week and she cooks too much. Maybe you could try out a couple of the frozen meals from Michelina's as they are usually only about $1...Thanks for sharing these and your own recipes.
