One of the things I love the most about this song is its loose often out of key or tune notes. It's "DILIGAF" attitude on the guitar with some pretty f-ing deep lyrics. If you get a chance check "She Was Waiting for Her Mother at the Station in Torino and You Know I Really Love You Baby but It's Getting to Heavy to Laugh" by Shawn Phillips. If the title doesn't spark your curiosity nothing will. 😁

Great reaction! Lou Reed is widely considered one of the best and most influential songwriters of the Rock era, despite almost negligible commercial success, with one solo hit in 1972 ("Walk on the Wild Side"). The Velvet Underground was his band from 1966-1970. Initially sponsored by Andy Warhol at the height of the NY Pop Art explosion and his own success, Warhol wanted to expand his own legendary "Factory" art scene into a multimedia assault on pop culture. He helped give The Velvet Underground exposure through his own notoriety, which helped them land a deal with MCA in 1966. Their first album, The Velvet Underground & Nico is an absolute masterpiece, but no one bought it at the time. Veering from Folk-Rock to Noise Rock to Art Rock and Proto-Punk, while remaining utterly listenable and singular throughout. Sort of like a much less commercial-sounding version of The Doors, with screeching viola instead of organ, and in place of the raw sex appeal of Jim Morrison was the menace of Reed and the ennui in the aloof vocals of German-born model-turned-chanteuse, Nico (who only sand on a handful of tracks and left after the first album). But what an album it was! As Brian Eno (incredibly influential in his own right, but that's another conversation) famously said in 1982 "the first Velvet Underground record sold only 30,000 copies in its first five years. Yet, that was an enormously important record for so many people. I think everyone who bought one of those 30,000 copies started a band!" The quote is often reworded, but to imply the same thing. The Velvet Underground was just hugely influential, even if it didn't sell beans. And sales just got worse for the next two albums as the US got more caught up in the false positivity of the Hippie thing instead of the bleak nihilism and ultra-realism and urban grit of Lou Reed's songwriting and the often harsh and weird textures of the band. The last of their four LPs (Loaded, 1970) was their most commercial, but by the time it was released the band was pretty much over. The little bit of airplay it got wasn't capitalized on. But people *were* listening out there. Notably in the UK, where David Bowie and Roxy Music introduced the seedy urban glamour into their own hugely influential sounds, but also in NYC where the scuzzier, more urgent stuff in the VU's catalog went on to shape the Punk and New Wave coming out of CBGB's a decade after the first Velvet Underground LP. It's weird in 2021, as a music fan and pop culture junky, to look around at the modern musical landscape and realize that the most popular musicians of the 60s and 70s were absolutely NOT the most influential. One doesn't hear The Beatles, Sly & The Family Stone, or Led Zeppelin in the music that defines pop culture in 2021 and the years leading the path here. It's The Velvet Underground, The Last Poets, and Kraftwerk who we hear in the artists of today. The pop music underground has had the last laugh, but the old guard are the ones who lived the high life, at the time. When Lou Reed (the singer/songwriter of The Velvet Underground whose only hit was the solo "Walk on the Wild Side" in 1972), he didn't exactly die in obscurity, but he's also not living in a castle, like someone from Zeppelin, or singing at inaugurations, like Aretha. I love all the chart-toppers from back in the day, but I can't help but cheer a little to see that the giants of the underground played a bigger role in shaping the music of the 21st century than the big sellers of the 20th century. Who doesn't love an underdog story, though???
