As a New Yorker, It was there for me on long train rides home and lonely summer nights out on my fire escape. There’s something about this track that I can’t quite put to words, that connects with me on a deep personal level.

dummytree that box set was a comp of 3 Australian bootlegs (etc, and so on ,(I forget the 3rd)) which were fairly readily available in the mid80s

It wasn't: it was a legit, licensed but cheeky and under the radar (Australia only) comp with lots of oddities. There's some cross-over, but it's not those comps.

With the VU having such a big cult following, and especially in the light of their reunion at the time, copies of that box were imported elsewhere. Amazingly, my local library in France used to have it and a couple of magazines reviewed it as it could be purchased as a limited import.

This is definitely rare, but there is another version with Lou Reed singing lead, on the box set titled _What Goes On_. Lou sang lead and there were lots of good harmonies on the refrain. You could tell Doug Yule was in the band instead of John Cale.
