The British invented or created the modern world. First modern democracy (the Magna Carta 1215 - everyone including the king subject to the law, first parliament in 1260 then elections every three years 1688 etc etc.) Then the first to fight slavery, perhaps the greatest act genuine altruism in history. It cost the British hugely but gained them nothing. Then the first to industrialise in what is known as “the Industrial Revolution” starting in the seventeen hundreds. In much of the eighteen hundreds the British made fifty percent of everything manufactured in the world.

The internet and the world wide web are two different things. The internet is the physical network that allows computers to talk to each other. The internet is an evolution of the American ARPAnet, which was used for academic and research purposes. The world wide web is the software that sits on top of the hardware.

Wikipedia: John Logie Baird FRSE (/ˈloʊɡi bɛərd/;[1] 13 August 1888 - 14 June 1946) was a Scottish inventor, electrical engineer, and innovator who demonstrated the world's first live working television system on 26 January 1926. In 1927, Baird transmitted a signal over 438 miles (705 km) of telephone line between London and Glasgow. In 1928, Baird's company (Baird Television Development Company/Cinema Television) broadcast the first transatlantic television signal, between London and New York, and the first shore-to-ship transmission.
