Great video. I have three of these and five Chilean 1935s and they are my favorites in my collection. Probably the best thing is the 7x57 chambering of a lot of the South American contracts. A cartridge that should have really caught on more. Highly effective, and more accurate than the 30 cals. I would say it should’ve beat out 7.62 x 51.

I remember seeing crates of mint FN/VZ carbines for sale @ Martin Retting's gunshop in Culver City, CA. in 1967. They had the turned down bolt & the receiver was in the white. They were $70 apiece at that time. Which would have bought you a mint luger, or nearly 2 oz of gold back then. I opted to buy a mint, out of the crate 1895 Chilean 7mm Mauser rifle that day instead for $45. Still have it too!

The reason why the goverment bought bot the FN-30 and 49 after WW2 is because they wanted to equip the army with the newer, semi-auto rifle but they still wanted to keep the guardia nacional (think of it as the french gerdarmes) equiped with a good rifle, so the army handed down the 30's to the guard, later on the same happened when the army adopted the FN-FAL and the guard got the 49's.

12 Dec 2021: I just (yesterday in fact) purchased a Venezuelan rifle in 7x57mm Mauser. It has been sporterized by mainly stock replace with a nice bit of wood and finish stock. Metal appears to be untouched except for the bolt (with match serial number to the receiver) has been turned down very similar to the carbine shown. That work is nicely done as well as no sign of tool marks or hammer marks are visible. The video is valuable in identifying what rifle (originally) I have. Thank you.

Well I guess that I am going to have to weigh in on this conversation so... I have a Venezuelan FN carbine in 7x57 that my Dad traded for in 1965 when they were retailing for about $35 US. At the time there was little to no collector interest in them so the first thing that we did was to sporterize it. We put a walnut Monte Carlo stock on it as was the style in the 1960s and later in the seventies after my dad passed I had it scoped and the bolt handle turned down and used it for deer hunting. It is an excellent hunting cartridge. As for the weaknesses that the fellow from Australia pointed out the cutout and the rail for the loading port is way behind the forward locking lugs and is not in consideration for weakening the action. It has been used for over a hundred years for heavier calibers and even hunted in the 275 Rigby configuration for game all the way up to and include elephants. I only wish that I would have had the foresight to save the military would and accessories that I had with the rifle when we got it when I was in high school but that was a long time ago. Still have the rifle still enjoy shooting it. I don't think that you can do better than an FN Mauser action.

This is why I watch your channel & C&Rsenal , all about information , for now or in the future .I recently came across a Yugo 24/47 priced at $350.00 and he had a bandolier of Turkey 1950 ammo on stripper clips for $35.00 . I bought 4 stripper clips with ammonia for $3.00 apiece . When I get more money I would like to get the Yugo 24/47 & ammo. I would still like to have the chance to meet you at a KCMO gun show sometime since I live in the area myself . Again thanks for the video

This boy is obsessed with Mausers despite their shortcomings. This FN manufactured one is a very good quality one as all inter war and post WW2 were. The FN actions had a lot of potential as sporters and many were the basis for Rigby hunting rifles and the like despite the charger thumb cut out. As a sporter they were and still are very popular. Cheers.
@MilsurpWorld
@MilsurpWorld 3 жыл бұрын
You're right, I am obsessed by them. Just curious, what shortcomings you think Mausers have?
@baobo67
@baobo67 3 жыл бұрын
@@MilsurpWorld Thanks. The 98 Mauser is probably the best bolt action ever designed. It does have shortcomings however while not an issue in sporting firearms they are in battle rifles. The front locking lugs claw extractor and strength are major features but a 90 degree bolt lift and cocking on extracting do make for a slow action. When the weapon is hot and/or under battle conditions extraction can be difficult so the additional force of cocking is not best at that time. Cock on closing only requires stripping a round from the magazine at the same time as cocking. The front locking while good for accuracy is vulnerable to dirt and free floating barrels never get a mention. There is an awkward safety catch and no peep sight (aperture) known to be far superior for accuracy and speed. The five round magazine is limiting. I had heard and you are more likely to know more that where the cut out for the thumb is when charging can be weak due a thin area and a heat treating problem during manufacture. So that is the way I see it. I have a modest collection which include Mausers and Lee Enfields but my favourite two are a Zastava M70 (98) Sporter in 22-250 and a Lee Enfield Jungle Carbine in 303. You certainly show some very beautiful Mausers in top condition that do not look like they have ever fired a shot in anger. You know your stuff and this is just my opinion. I am Australian and like the Canadians we like our Lee Enfields. Cheers
@MilsurpWorld
@MilsurpWorld 3 жыл бұрын
I could guess by the points you were bringing up that you were a Lee Enfield fan. We all have our perspective and I have a couple Lee Enfields on my wall and I like them for what they are. If you can find a Swedish Mauser or another pre-98 Mauser I'd recommend checking out. They are cock on close and can be worked almost as fast as an Enfield. Swedish steel is renowned for its quality.

These are really nice Venezuelan mausers. I have a M30 short rifle and carbine, and have always wondered whether the carbine was blued after-market. Thanks for answering that question! 7mm seems more available than 6.5, 7mm kicks a bit more but not enough to be a deterrent. I'm a big fan of a semi-pistol grip so that's one thing a lot of SA guns have over Swedes.
