CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Over Somerset's (Morgan Freeman) objections, Mills (Brad Pitt) empties a clip on John Doe (Kevin Spacey) for murdering his wife.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director David Fincher's dark, stylish thriller ranks as one of the decade's most influential box-office successes. Set in a hellish vision of a New York-like city, where it is always raining and the air crackles with impending death, the film concerns Det. William Somerset (Morgan Freeman), a homicide specialist just one week from a well-deserved retirement. Every minute of his 32 years on the job is evident in Somerset's worn, exhausted face, and his soul aches with the pain that can only come from having seen and felt far too much. But Somerset's retirement must wait for one last case, for which he is teamed with young hotshot David Mills (Brad Pitt), the fiery detective set to replace him at the end of the week. Mills has talked his reluctant wife, Tracy (Gwyneth Paltrow), into moving to the big city so that he can tackle important cases, but his first and Somerset's last are more than either man has bargained for. A diabolical serial killer is staging grisly murders, choosing victims representing the seven deadly sins. First, an obese man is forced to eat until his stomach ruptures to represent gluttony, then a wealthy defense lawyer is made to cut off a pound of his own flesh as penance for greed. Somerset initially refuses to take the case, realizing that there will be five more murders, ghastly sermons about lust, sloth, pride, wrath, and envy presented by a madman to a sinful world. Somerset is correct, and something within him cannot let the case go, forcing the weary detective to team with Mills and see the case to its almost unspeakably horrible conclusion. The moody photography is by Darius Khondji; the nauseatingly vivid special effects are by makeup artist Rob Bottin, best known for more fantasy-oriented work in films like The Howling (1981).

Like a line from somewhere else. Jackie Chan's mom in Drunken Boxer says, " kill me, and the baby inside me". Love that scene, esp when she says "I am down on my knees" and "hit me! Hit me!" Anita Mui is a brilliant actress... But this scene hurts my heart 😢

I originally thought that pitt/freeman would end up being the last two victims. When he said ‘if you don’t agree to the deal the last two victims will never be found” and I thought that meant because they weren’t dead yet. But when the box showed up I had a feeling it’d have something to do with Paltrow seeing as it’d be odd to just have her throughout the movie and then just disappear, especially with the whole baby discussion scene.

Consider this : in the 80's, a youth karate instructor was sentenced for molesting one of his students. As he was being led through an airport, under police custody, the father of the boy who was molested, shot and killed the karate instructor. The father only received 5 years probation. So, it is highly possible that Mills, in this scenario, would not serve any time in prison.

@@nolanhewitt2563 That's such a flawed notion. He won nothing. He died in the pursuit of change that will never come. Nothing they did was special, or significant, and within no time at all everything they sacrificed their life to do won't even be remembered. They took a very roundabout path to suicide, took a few people with 'em, and made a show of it on the way. And let's not attribute John provoking David to some sort of insidiously genius plan on their part. Goading someone is a pretty achievable feat, especially when you use their murdered wife and unborn child as bait. Revenge is a very honest, very acceptable response. Any other path is a courtesy, undue, and with no reward at the end then some contrived sense of moral superiority.

Some movies will always stay with you. Somerset, Mills & John Doe are three stellar cinematic characters, the actors all excel and this scene is spellbinding, sensational and so shocking. The flash frame image of Mills wife Tracy that triggers the shooting of Doe is heartbreaking. A pinnacle of movie-making.

There's a good reason the actors fought the studio to keep this ending, but no matter how many times you see it, it's never less of a gut punch. Brutal and bleak storytelling at its finest.

He fed a guy and kicked him until he popped, tortured a guy to suicide, methodically tortured a drug-dealing pedophile, made some poor guy split a woman open with a knife-dick, mutilated some vain woman, mentally tortured 2 detectives and killed (who knows what else) and beheaded one's wife, effectively killing his family at the same. Kevin Spacey, in effect, has played possibly the sickest, most terrifying son of a bitch on screen ever. What a movie.

You let him off easy by killing him. Life in prison would have torn him apart- forced into a box with societies most heinous sinners where his only escape is suicide?
