He is definitely a very promising player. Emotions like joy, teasing, anger, and etc. need to be brought out more. Carmen has many moods Sarah Chang plays it so brilliantly and beautifully. There is no one in this day and age that plays like her. No disrespect to other violinists.

when you are a master like Maxim Vengerosv you can tell people if their music has emotion or not; when you are a nobody, comments like that only show your jealousy and prejudice.

I disagree - music is meant to move people regardless of their level of knowledge in the field. A non-musician should feel absolutely as right saying “I wasn’t moved by that” or, “I didn’t think it was particularly emotional”, etc. because the purpose of the art form is to speak to them, a "nobody". Understanding how it could have been more engaging is something far more tricky (and it doesn’t just depend on the performer either) - but this is what musicians spend their time doing. Vengerov is able to instruct the student in how to better express the feelings in the music and reveal to him ways to negotiate certain technical demands in ways no untrained musician could. I agree with you in that some of the comments are overdone and, like you say, display "jealousy and prejudice”, but I don’t think this is necessarily all of them.

This is not being spiteful. I love to watch violinists show expressions when they play and are really taken by the music. I almost want to ask them if they would like a cigarette after they are finished. Unfortunately , I'm an Irish fiddler and I just can't emotionally show expression when I'm playing Swallowtail Jig, Blackberry Blossom, or Devils Dream. This gentleman is really amazing and so are his students.

i liked the sound. This is supposed to be like a gyspy dance and a fantasy at the same time. 2:00-2:01 i got a chill. It was a great mixture of those two. Also I liked the pause at 2:11-2:12. This also added to brinigng those two factors up.

Technical machine? The student? He seems pretty into his music, if you ask me. A technical machine wouldn't express his playing through his facial expression or movements.

Just as an add-on: Horowitz (the pianist) hardly moved or showed any physical emotion while he played, particularly in the later years, and yet the music is some of the most human, expressive and poignant I have ever heard. You can check out recordings of him on here.

@dziady1 Paradigmatic ignorance of the Internet. With how expressively and well he plays, I would say that he does "seem to know the slightest thing about the violin and what it can do" and that he does "play with a formed personality." Additionally, Vengerov's instruction of his interpretation is his way of teaching how to "serve the music." This "kid" is at the level at which one can only better him through interpretational nuances as opposed to technical ones.

@Neilusful This is not true. This young man obviously knows his notes, and understands the overall frame of this piece. But only the wiser in experience knows how to truly milk this piece for all its worth. It takes a lot of time to know how much you can do with a piece like this.

What are you talkin' about? Have you ever been at a masterclass? It's not unusual that the student tries what the "master" said and I wouldn't call that incident an interruption at all. Words can only get a student so far.

@maewe. Nah that's kinda slack, I don't think it's technicality, I think it's from being "forced to play" by their parents and plus culturally, asians aren't allowed to express themselves. They are taught to be obedient and well disciplined. By making that kinda comment you're insulting not only asians, but the rest of the world and ultimately musical integrity.

you dont need a violin to do clases, you dont need to show just to explain, most of great teachers cn teach better without a violi rostal, flesch auer also I think, actually if your way to teah is this ons: hey why dont you try this and just play it is like how I do that

And a masterclass with a "master" showing his own playing is even weaker, because the purpose of a masterclass is not (or shouldn't be) a student imitating the teacher. Nobody needs someone to play something in a certain way just because their teacher played it that way, without real conviction. A musician should understand what he is doing, and do it a certain way because he thinks this is the way to do it, not because their teacher said so.
