But some of its most beautiful jewels are particularly fragile and threatened, like Venice and Pompeii. With nearly 23 million visitors per year, Venice, the Serenissima, suffers from tourist overcrowding. The Grand Canal, this 4 km arm of the sea which crosses the city, is on the verge of saturation. A dangerous situation for people but also for the fragile heritage of the City of the Doges. Especially for its marvelous palaces which suffer the ravages of “moto ondoso”, a phenomenon caused by the speed of motorboats. In Pompeii, bad weather and especially poor management due to mafia embezzlement endanger a site whose attendance is constantly growing.
