⚡ 💀 💕 / 🍫 💝 The BABYMETAL members are very aware that "WTF?" is a common first reaction. That's one reason their early videos went viral. They look at this as a way of getting a foot in the door. 'Gimme Chocolate!!' is their most popular music video (over 160 million views). They have been joined on stage for this song by members of Korn, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and DragonForce. Not all at the same time though. : ) That was the world debut for this song, although the music video uses the studio audio, rather than the live concert audio. The actual live 'Legend 1997' concert (named for the lead singer's birth year) sounded great on blu-ray with the live sound. Lead singer Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto) had just turned sixteen the day before this December 2013 concert. Yuimetal (Yui Mizuno) and Moametal (Moa Kikuchi) were both fourteen. The whole thing, on paper, doesn't seem like it should work. It just does. Probably because they don't half-ass it. The songwriting, the choreography, the singing, and the music are all executed at the highest level.

Welcome to Babymetal ! Great reaction, you hit on many great points ! You dancing experience really shines through. 10:35 Yuimetal on the left and Moametal on the right. Moametal has the dimples and Yuimetal has chubby cheeks :-) They were 14, 14 and 16 in this video. She had turned 16 the day before this show (December 2013), it was the 16th birthday celebration show. When Babymetal started they were 11, 11 and 12. Babymetal is extremely professional and energetic even at such an early age. They can do a full hour show like this or a 1.5 hour show with strategic breaks. It's one of the things which really surprises people when the first shock wears off. And the shock is great with many people (this is also the video which went viral). As you mentioned the metal is real authentic metal. Sadly the 'band' in this video is actually a fake live band, it was just backing track, this was the last big show they had this. It's because in the early days Babymetal couldn't afford a hugely skillful live backing band. Babymetal music combined many different things/genres and styles and is actually not something many people are used to or even able to play. So Babymetal actually has the best session musicians as their live backing band. You are correct Su-metal has a great voice, even at an early age. And Babymetal makes it fit to the metal music as well in a unique way. Babymetal choreographer is Mikiko Mizuno. Which is the same for J-Pop trio Perfume. Perfume are the best known J-Pop idols in Japan when it comes to individual members (something like AKB might be well known but keeping track of members is obviously hard for the average person). Mikiko was involved in choreographer and organization of the production of Olympic Games in Tokyo and the handover event at the previous Olympic games. Babymetal when they were teens were actually doing world tours and were sometimes referred to as the most famous Japanese teens outside of Japan. Babymetal actually was such a big success outside of Japan, especially the west. Part of their popularity in Japan actually was from a sort of 'reverse import' effect because of the news item about their success outside of Japan. Their first world tour was announced at Budokan in 2014 (the show which was related to their first album release), so a few months after the performance you watched. You should think of Budokan in Tokyo as the 'Madison Square Garden of Japan'.

Welcome to the Foxhole 🦊🤘 You started with a lot of basic info, that's nice so you can get an idea about how unique they are. Dance choreography and metal had never been seen before and they somehow managed to make it works creating their unique own genre called kawaii-metal, mixing Jpop and heavy metal along with many more sub genres and rhythms, you'll have so much fun going through this journey. However this isn't actually live version, is studio album version over a live performance which was partially live only on the vocals and choreography with backing track sound. They have their own band called Kami Band introduced later on that same show and after that Kami Band become regular at live performance. BabyMetal is a Japanese metal dance unit created in 2010 under another Jpop/Jrock group called Sakura Gakuin, they had 11 and 12 years old and become independent after 2013, they created their own genre called kawaii-metal, mixing Jpop with metal sound and different subgenres along with many more rhythms, They are: *SuMetal* (lead vocals). *MoaMetal* (scream and dance) *YuiMetal* (scream and dance, former member since 2018) This was in December 2013 at SuMetal 16th Birthday, the other girls had 14 yo and there was a big party you have seen nothing yet, wait for _"Babymetal Death"_ Some recommendations for next songs like _Catch Me If You Can_ live at Budokan 2014 (you got a safe to react version with subtitles at GuilhermeCait channel) or _Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!_ live at this same live performance Legend 1997 in Makuhari Messe Japan when SuMetal is celebrating her birthday becoming a metal goddess queen and leaving her idol jpop form (you can find one at Gans Tomas channel). You have more than 50 songs and still more to come. Amuse their label is very hard to deal so if you want to avoid copyright blocked you have *Babymetal Reactor Resource* channel you'll get full original clips of their best live performance with watermarked logo safe to react, look for "Future Plans" vid, follow instructions and you'll get all of them, upload the one with the logo for us and you can watch without it, don't worry for us we already saw all of them. Please always try to resist going for live compilations as much as you can, the watermarked and effect you put here is a great way when doing official MV,.nice. You did a great in-depth breakdown of this song and everything you said was on point, again wait for live performance when they shine and sound a lot better, just in case don't watch Glastonbury 2019 performance, bad sound and not so great crowd. Hope you keep coming back with more BM songs. See you! 🦊🤘❤️

Great first reaction, welcome to the world of BABYMETAL! Since you mentioned the band, it should be noted that the skeleton musicians featured here (Babybones) were actually not a real band. They were miming playing the instruments, while the music came from a backing track (minus the vocals). They did this for a short time in the beginning before they could afford a real band. The good thing about this is that it becomes even better when you see that band (the real live band was actually featured in the encore of this very show). Every single member is an outstanding musician, you'll love them. Perhaps try the song "Headbanger" from the "Legend 1997" show to get the full treatment. It should also be relatively safe from getting blocked. BABYMETAL's music is very diverse, but I guess you'll know that by now, since you have already seen BxMxC as well. You'll also find influences from Reggae, Ska, Hip Hop, Waltz, Dubstep and more. It's all fused perfectly with different subgenres if Metal. Most entertaining music and performances ever!

Ok, so The One (the name of the Babymetal fanbase) is gonna flood your comment section of tons of suggestions and details about the group. One thing to keep in mind, Live Babymetal is Best Babymetal.... their live performances are where they shine, and they have won numerous awards to prove it. Ofcourse some of the MV's are pretty good too like for Doki Doki morning, Uki Uki Midnight, Megitsune, Karate, etc... But nothing really beats their live concerts, which is why a lot of the "official" videos of their later songs are basically shots from their concerts. Hope you enjoy your exploration of the musical world of Babymetal. 😁😁😁😁🤘🦊🤘

Nice reaction. At the start of this song Yui and Moa are making the gun sounds kids in Japan use and are holding their hands in gun shapes. Which means they're not asking for chocolate. they are demanding chocolate in a kid Kawaii friendly way. While the song is mostly about wanting to eat that chocolate. They pause because they're worried about gaining weight. But by the end they eat it anyway. They become so happy and trumpet about it which you can see in the choreography and hear a bit in the music as well. Glad you like dancing because Babymetal dances to all of their songs. The choreography for each song is different. today they have over 50 songs. How they remember it all? As they would say Only The Fox god Knows. Babymetal are pros at what they do. Even at this age. Full of talent and energy for years to come. They have been together for over 10 years now. Over that time, they have developed the skills to go along with all that talent. And they started with some really good skills too. A little more on them. The Kamiband is their stage band. They've had many members over the years. Yui left in 2018 due to health reasons. Since then, they've used a few backup dancers to fill in but none of them ever sang Yui's parts. Most notably the avenger dancers. (Riho, Kano, and Momoko). Riho left the last tour when she released a solo jpop album. Kano left when she became part of @onefive another Jpop group. Momoko stayed until covid shut the tour down. Momoko did so well I was hoping she would become a new member. But it didn't happen. Today Babymetal is listed as Su-metal and Moametal. Su will be 25 in dec, and Moa just turned 23 on July 4th. For this performance Su had just turned 16. Yui and Moa are 14. The legend 1997 concert which this is from celebrated Su's birthday. She was born in 1997 that is not the year the concert was done. Their stage presence is amazing. It's been said on stage they're 10' tall. Off stage well not so much. Su is 5'2" and as you can see in this video Yui and Moa are much shorter than that. Today Su is still listed at 5'2" and Moa has made it to 5'1" maybe. But that's what they list them at, so we'll just go with it. Sorry about the novel but 10 years is a lot to go over. And this was the short short version. There's a lot of history for this Band and it all just makes them even more legendary. Babymetal everything you want in music and somethings you didn't know you needed. See You

Great first reaction and welcome to the BABYMETAL Galaxy. Well done on doing some reading up on who they are - at the risk of repeating some of that (but you did ask for more information) I will be posting a very long wall of test - apologies in advance. Their name 'BABYMETAL' is not about their age (although when they started in 2010 they were aged 12 and 11 so it probably did play a part too). The name was chosen for two reasons: - to symbolize that they gave birth to a new genre of metal music (kawaii metal, kawaii meaning 'cute' as in adorable, not sexy). It is a fusion of metal with JPop aesthetics - because the writing (and pronunciation) in Japanese is nearly identical to the writing of "heavy metal" (and they love a pun): BABYMETAL = ベビメタル (be-bi-me-ta-ru) heavy metal = ヘビメタル (he-bi-me-ta-ru) 'Gimme Chocolate' is not a song I would normally recommend to anybody for their first experience - well, maybe a real live version with the Kami Band playing, just not the official video which has the studio audio dubbed over the footage from the live performance. This was the video that went viral and got them noticed, but a lot of that was to do with the "WTF" reactions it gets from most people. With 'Gimme Chocolate' it can go either way - some people absolutely love the contrast or clash of styles straight away, for many metalheads it is just too much and they switch off as soon as Yui and Moa come in with their "atatatatatatatata dokyun" and sadly too many just never get beyond that. This is one song where the different styles are (deliberately I think) not blended seamlessly, so it goes very noticeably from one to the other and back They have about 50 songs now and every one of them is different. Some are very metal, others (like 'Gimme Chocolate') lean more towards their pop roots and they do everything in between. They have songs in virtually every metal genre (thrash, djent, black, death, power, speed, folk, prog etc) but they will blend in other musical styles and genres with the metal (not just pop, you will find ska, reggae, Bollywood, Latin, rap, hip hop and so many more) often when you least expect it - and they make it work. BABYMETAL are Su-metal (now 24, this video was filmed at a concert the day after her 16th birthday in December 2013) and Moametal (she was 23 on July 4th, she was 14 in this video) - the third original member, Yuimetal who also just turned 23, sadly left the band in October 2018 having been absent from the stage for the previous 12 months. She had ongoing (and undisclosed) health issues and had not fully recovered so was still unable to perform, so she announced she would be leaving the band and hoped to follow her own long held dreams. From the start of the 2019 tour through 2021 Su and Moa, who had chosen to continue as a duo after Yui left, were supported by three dancers (the Avengers Kano, Riho and Momoko) who took turns to dance in the third spot (no vocals). BABYMETAL started in 2010 as a sub-unit of a school themed J-Pop Idol group called Sakura Gakuin. As members of that group they would sing songs and dance, the sub-units would have their own themed songs (tennis, cooking, science etc). BABYMETAL were the heavy music club. This was the pet project of just one man, their producer Kei Kobayashi or 'Kobametal', a lifelong metalhead, based entirely around the vocal talents of Suzuka Nakamoto or Su-metal the lead singer. He had seen her a year or two before singing with her previous J-Pop trio and was so impressed with her unusually loud (for a JPop singer) singing style and stage presence. He saw her potential to front a metal/pop fusion band. He had his chance to work with her when Sakura Gakuin was formed and he started the Heavy Music Club with Suzuka as lead vocals and, thinking he might also add another thing not usually seen in metal - choreographed dance, he added her two young friends (also very talented performers) Yui Mizuno and Moa Kikuchi supporting her as "scream and dance" - more accurately backing vocals and in charge of hyping the audience with their choreo and leading chants etc . The heavy music club, unlike the more commercially viable sub-units, had to be self-funding (they even borrowed clothes to make their costumes for their first shows with the Idol group - the other sub-units had theirs paid for) as no agency in Japan in 2010 would have invested in metal as there was virtually no market for it at that time, but under the umbrella of the Idol group there was no risk to them if it didn't take off or just failed. So they sang their songs and danced to a backing track with pre-recorded instrumentals and, against everybody's expectations, BABYMETAL started to gain their own small following. In 2013 Su would be 15 and would graduate from the Idol group (having the school theme it was for girls aged 10 to 15), but it was decided that BABYMETAL should be her (also Yui's and Moa's) vehicle as they furthered their careers as vocalists and dancers and should separate from the Idol group to go with Su as an independent band in their own right. In anticipation of the separation a little more budget was made available. They started to play their own solo shows starting off in warehouses and tiny venues with a capacity of 150-250 people, a shopping mall and they played the food hall at a metal festival. The live band (the Kami Band - some of Japan's very best session musicians) was also introduced and phased in gradually from October 2012 playing at a couple of festivals and the encores in a few shows. They became the full time backing band early in 2014. If you see musicians in a video wearing skeleton suits (as they were in this one) they were not a real band and were miming the instruments to a backing track - they were called 'Babybones' and were there for show in the early days (no pretence was made otherwise, everybody knew what they were doing). The Kami Band are the ones in traditional white burial robes and white corpse face paint (more recently in black robes and since 2019 wearing masks) In December 2013 Su-metal turned 16 and at the show celebrating her birthday (Legend 1997 where the 'Gimme Chocolate' video was filmed) the final step was taken in the transformation of BABYMETAL from sub-unit of the Idol group to independent band and the Kami Band became their full time support in all live shows early in 2014. They have been with them ever since. For the 2019 and 2020 US and European tours the Kami Band of the West (American musicians from Galactic Empire on guitars and bass, Anthony Barone once of Shadow of Intent on drums) were introduced. BABYMETAL have gone on to become one of the very best live bands on the planet (and have won international awards to prove that is not just my opinion). Their big arena shows are spectacular, but they put on great shows every time, even in smaller venues and festivals as they tour the world where they can't always have all the special effects and flames etc too. The official videos are very good, but do tend to get blocked, so as BABYMETAL are first and foremost a live performance act - that is where you will see and hear them at their best every time - I would recommend live performances, but try to avoid fan made compilations for your first time seeing a new song if possible unless there is no better alternative - there are some good ones, there are some that have been put together very poorly and it would be a shame to have your first time with a song spoiled by poor editing - once you know a song and have seen a full performance those compilations are not an issue (so much).

Nice reaction, thanks and welcome to BABYMETAL! "Gimme Chocolate" is a fun song about the girls wanting to eat chocolate but being worried about their weight. But it's also quite heavy instrumentally. Which matches perfectly their own genre: kawaii + metal. If you enjoy dancing you are at the right place. They have a different choreo for every song. And yes, they are so good at this. I'd also suggest you live performances over music videos. But some or their music videos are worth to watch, specially "Megitsune", "Iine", etc. Until next time!

Welcome to the wonderful world of Babymetal! To clarify a few things: Babymetal started with Su, Moa, and Yui (it is actually pronounced Yu-e) until 2018 when Yui officially left due to health reasons. Now Babymetal is just Su and Moa. The avengers are "just" backup dancers, they have no mics and don't sing. They swapped out in the past lot between the three of them but these days it is usually Momoka that is performing with Babymetal, since the other two are involved in other projects and signed by other companies. They started in 2010 when Su was 12/13 and Yui and Moa were 10/11 as part of an idol group called Sakura Gakuin. All three did all sorts of stuff before that (modeling, singing, acting, etc.). Babymetal created their own metal genre called "kawaii metal" (aka cute metal) by fusing idol/jpop elements with heavy metal. The Kami band is a group of session musicians that play for Babymetal since 2013. They have a lot of members but there are a few members that play almost every show with them (Takayoshi Ohmura (Guitar), Leda Cygnus (Guitar), BOH (Bass), Aoyama Hideki (Drums), and not to forget Fujioka Mikio † (Guitar) who sadly past away in 2018 after suffering injuries from an accident (he fell from a high observation deck while stargazing). The video was filmed at the Legend 1997 show in 2013, celebrating Su-metals 16th birthday. The sound in the video is actually the studio recording since the Kami band hasn't yet joined them on stage. They only came on for the last 5 songs of the show. The guys in the back with the skeleton costumes and the instruments are called baby bones and just mimic playing the instruments. They did this for the first couple of years since Babymetal couldn't afford a real band at that time.

Also they're making pointed social commentary. It's a song about eating chocolate, and worrying about their weight and body image. On top of that this song was released near Valentine's Day. In Japan on Valentine's Day girls have to give chocolate to all the men they know. It's referred to as giri choco, obligation chocolate. This is gimi choco, and they're not giving it away, they're eating it. Babymetal is a layered band. You can enjoy them or dig in for deeper meaning. either works

I saw some comments explaining the word-play with the group name and the name of the song, but the backing band is also a pun! Part of the band's lore is that the trio are messengers of the Fox God, and Kami Band means "god band." But "Kami" written a different way in Japanese can also mean "hair" so it's a reference to the Hair bands from back in the day. This project is led by metal fans, so you'll find all kinds of fun easter eggs like that~ Welcome to the Fox Hole and have fun~

Great reaction. Welcome to the world of Babymetal. You have stumbled upon a deep foxhole with this group. You should also try Headbanger Live - Legend of 1997 Apocalypse it is from this same concert but its later in the show and the Kami band takes over and plays the music. Amazing show and song. Also Road of Resistance live in Japan is another big one. But they have many songs to react to and I'm sure you will enjoy.

You said so many things, so it took me a while to organize my thoughts, one of the things you mentioned really hit the nail on the head: you recognized their passion to perform. I don't think I've ever seen any reactor say that and only seen people who are in team Babymetal or at least in the industry say something like that. This is something many people latch on to unconsciously, but never think about. 7:08 you had a miscalculation/misunderstanding the timeline (no worries happens easily when you get hit with lots of information), it was 4 years between when they started and performing at Budokan.

You couldn't have picked two better songs, IMO to start giving you a sense of their incredible stylistic range.

Great reaction. My biggest suggestion is to always react to their LIVE performances whenever possible as this is where they shine. The MV’s are good but if you react to one I would always follow up by reacting to the LIVE version as well. These girls and their world class backing band The Kami Band are fearless, every song/performance is different, they explore many different music genres and NAIL them. I would suggest that you react to the following: Karate LIVE at 2016 Download Festival in the UK where 60,000+ British metal heads sing along with the girls. Road of Resistance Live in Japan. Good luck.

So now the foxhole as well, huh? :) Definitely, another journey that is very, very interesting and full of fun, energy and surprises. 🤘🏻🦊🤘🏻 Edit: If you want to hear and see how good Su-Metal truly is, then I definitely recommend 'Akatsuki (Unfinished ver.) [Video ID: Mh5nrXIw6s ] and 'No Rain, No Rainbow' [Video ID: pDgqo6fcliY ]. The latter performance also makes the Kami-Band shine. Get ready for some serious goosebumps. :) ___________________ 「 _"完璧なんてありえない" / Perfection? No one gets there._ 」 --- from *BAND-MAID* 'Warning' 🕊

The girls were Idol Pop professionals before being recruited by a producer (the man behind MAD CAPSULE MARKETS) to form BABYMETAL. His vision was to combine Idol Pop and Death Metal. BTW, in Japanese, BABYMETAL is pronounced “be-bi-me-ta-ru / ベビメタル,” which sounds almost exactly like “he-bi-me-ta-ru / ヘビメタル” (Heavy Metal).

Just a quick correction, the man behind MAD CAPSULE MARKETS wrote 'Gimme Chocolate' and 'Awadama Fever' for BABYMETAL, but their producer and the man with the vision for the fusion of metal with Jpop aesthetics is lifelong metalhead Kei Kobayashi who was working in the kids division with the Amuse talent agency when he spotted Su-metal and recognised her potential to front a metal band. Whether he had the idea for Kawaii Metal first or if it was only after he'd spotted Su is not clear.

The Kami Band is a rotating group of session artists that rotate in and out in support of Babymetal at live performances as their own bands and projects allow. They are the best Japan has to offer. In recent years, there was a Kami Band of the West that consists of musicians from the US and Europe to perform overseas. Many are members of the Star Wars themed metal band, Galactic Empire.

Here an identification guide. Su-metal is a towering 5 ft 2 in and always wears a high ponytail. Only Yui and Moa have twin tail hair styles. Yui wears a glove on her right hand and is usually on Su's right side. Moa wears a glove on her left hand. Moa is easier to identify with her dimples, heart-warming smile, and bouncy left leg. The Avenges have neither a ponytail or twin tails. Babymetal loves performing and they love their fans. They practice not to get it right, but until they can't get it wrong.

In the very very early days it was the other way around: Su-metal had twin tails and Yui and Moa had ponytail. For example check out: 【BABYMETAL】 コメント 「WOMEN'S POWER 20th Anniversary」 On the Kawaii Girl Japan KZbin channel.

@@autohmae Thanks, I was aware, was just trying to provide a simple guide for the majority of their performances. It's strange after seeing so many videos of Su with the high ponytail and MoiMoi with the twin tails, then watching videos where it's the reverse. Now that they are a duet, Moa wears wrist bands on both arms. Probably a styling choice, but could also symbolize Yui's spirit OTFGK Always appreciate your insights into BM, I'm still in the learning stages after thousands of hours of watching videos, reading comments (such as yours and the others), reddit, SG, and so on. Never been so immersed in band before. Watching them grow from pre-teen idols into the beautiful ladies they are and impatiently waiting for the seal to be broken.

@@GenTzu it really is a fox hole you can dive very deep into. I like the idea Moametal might have both because she is now responsible for both roles and or in some kind of Yui-connection

Suzuka started performing at the age of 7 (possibly even 5, not sure about that). Yui and Moa joined her in Sakura Gakuin at the age of 10. They were fearless! Yui has the chubby cheeks and Moa has the giant dimples. That is the easiest way to tell which is which.
