Have natural gas service in this house. Have two existing fireplaces that we haven't used in quite a few years. I think I am going to look into gas inserts since the masonry is in place.

Clay, Thanks for giving educated and honest information. We have a ventless in our basement, and it heats super fast, but after about 10 minutes, I feel like there is no oxygen left for me to breath. My wife also got headaches when we ran it. We finally gave up on it and just use a space heater. I will never use ventless again. Yes, you can save money with ventless fireplaces, non-bpa-free water bottles, cars made of tin foil, unhealthy food, etc, but there may be consequences to all of these choices, and they may not show up for a long time. To me, besides ventless, there is no wrong answer. You just have to chose your desired balance between ambiance and efficiency. Total Ambiance - Wood fireplace - You just can't beat the look, smell and sound of a real wood fire. More Ambiance - B-vent - You can run it with open doors, and there is nothing between you and he fire. More Efficiency - Direct Vent - More efficient, but the glass doors separate you from the fire. Total Efficiency - Gas furnace. - Today, these are so efficient, they can be vented with a plastic exhaust line.

This is old outdated information. The DOE rates a Vented gas fireplace as a Decorative Gas Appliance (little to no heat output). Where as, the DOE now rates a Vent-free/Ventless as a Supplemental Gas Heating Appliance (99.9% efficient). If professionally installed and serviced annually, they are totally safe. And are a great supplement to your primary heat source. Thus, saving you up to 30% annually on your primary heating cost. The real key is matching the maximum heat (BTU) output to the square footage of the room the fireplace is in and how many openings does that room have to rest of the interior house. Also, one of the most important things about Vent-free is that every vent-free gas appliance is equipped with an Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS) that will automatically shut the appliance down, if the oxygen level in the house reaches 25% (which is not the danger level). The ODS will not allow you to relight the pilot until the oxygen returns to 30%. Vented is not so equipped. For more factual information go to www.ventfree.org/

This great. I like the condensation on the windows because it keeps them clean. It also increase the CO2 levels and I love that because my wife and dog sleep longer. It also caused mold on my attic and I got free roof from my insurance. company. I just watched the KZbin video called "The Girl Who lived on CO2".

The video has been removed from KZbin… I wonder why… That is very concerning! Do you know how long ago it was that you watched it? I’m going to search for it on the Internet to see if I can find it .

Thanks for this vid! The AMA or ALA wouldn’t say to would harm because they make so damn much money just like the ACA! Idk about the candles or plugins but makes sense so thanks for that! The Propane guy that we paid to come out last week was no help nor did the company leave an itemized checklist with us of what they actually did. We are doing our own troubleshooting and finding out more info on here. There’s a strong odor not rotten egg or onion but of actual gas smell so bad had to turn off tank outside and forgoeusing it entirely as it wouldn’t subside and I got a headache.

I've designed and tested gas logs for both Heatmaster and Peterson. I was instrumental in designing the G-10 vent free burner, the Western Campfire set and Majestic Oak. In 2005 I was diagnosed with Sarcoidosis, which was severely aggravated when I was around unvented logs and had to remove them from my floor for several years. Canada has completely outlawed them, and now policy statements from the EPA, American Lung Association and Green Builders Council have been issued warning of their use.

Actually, most vented sets are about the same price. Yes, there are $10,000 direct vent fireplaces out there, but in the 100s we sell every year, I can only think of one that came on over 10k. Most are in the $2,000 to $5000 range.

Profit margins with vented units are much higher than those with vent free units due to market competition and region exclusivity. Hearth shops will typically always push vented over vent free because it puts more money in their pockets. I have 22 years experience with both vented and vent free products and have no hesitation using VF products in my own home.

I'm glad that ventless units work well for you, and I'm glad that you are saving money. My views are simply formulated from nearly 20 years of listening to people have very difficult experiences. Your home's layout, tightness and your region will all influence how they work. The issue, is, hot dogs are "completely safe" but they also have an allowable amount of rodent hair and feces in them, so limited consumption is suggested.

Just looked at a house that has vent free gas logs. They had an incident where a log got moved and the flame no longer burned properly. They must have left it on a day or so like that. The whole house filled with soot. The walls had to be repainted. The floors and furniture had to be cleaned. Clothes were thrown out. The bill was over 30k$. It was fortunate that no one was in the upstairs bedrooms during the incident or else they would have likely succumbed to the carbon monoxide. After all that. They did it again a couple years later. Fortunately not as bad.

That's funny Clay. My son and I picked out the original wood for this set. It's called the TEXAS STACK!!!!!!!!!!!
@gasgrillguy
@gasgrillguy 10 жыл бұрын
Steve, I'm sure you may see some similarity to the Texas Stack logs, just like your Texas Sizzler grill looks a lot like a TEC grill. But it is indeed different. Not everything that everyone does in this industry revolves around you and your logs. Perhaps with a better understanding of that you'd have more dealers in my area instead of none. Including me.

I have majestic unvented gas heater and it doesn't put out nearly enough heat with the damper open. Not sure how anyone is getting any heat out of a vented log.
@gasgrillguy
@gasgrillguy 10 жыл бұрын
Vent free heaters heat with convection, or hot air, so most travels up and the damper lets it out. Vented, heats both convectively and radiantly which is light. Remember that an average vented log will produce nearly twice the heat since it has twice the fire, so letting go of some of it may not be that big of a deal.

I would never put in Vent free logs or recommend them. Was just in a class where we measured Co levels and it was way past 35 ppm. Homes Are So Energy Efficient Now, that Negative Pressure Is Becoming More Of A problem then it was in the past. These logs can make you sick. As the instructor explained it, the flame will always win. He said you couldn't pay him to install a vent free log set.

Also, CO testers might detect CO, but they do little to communicate unhealthy levels of CO2, and H2O. Also, they're low limits may be set at X, while the level that may be harmful, since CO is accumulated in the bloodstream over time, I wouldn't put complete faith in them.

I prefer vented, DV style heat source. More efficient overall.
@JM-yx1lm
@JM-yx1lm 4 жыл бұрын
How the heck do you figure that? A vented log is like 10 percent efficiant. Sure 100 percent of the fuel is burned in to heat but that all goes up the flue.
@chuckfreeman7392
@chuckfreeman7392 4 жыл бұрын
@@JM-yx1lm I said DV (Direct Vent) not B-vent. DV meaning a sealed, vented unit that gets air from outside. Vented Gas Logs are the most inefficient method of heating a home. I agree with you on that.

I have never, ever focused on margins to determine what I think about a product. The very idea is shallow and beneath me. My thoughts on VF vs Vented are based solely on my own experiences in more than 17 years of gas logs. If you'd spend a day in my shop you'll hear from several people who come in and ask us to tear out and remove vent free units because of odors, moisture on windows and upper respiratory problems. You can have your own thoughts on safety, but don't dismiss me based on greed.

Certainly, there are those that seem to have great success with unvented. I'm not saying they cause cancer, but there are dozens of people a week that express their concerns to me at my store, and that most surely skews my views after time.

So wishy washy, just admit that vent free in a bad idea. To say that they are not for everybody is like saying poisoning oneself is not for everybody. I would not do business with anyone that knowingly sells a product that is proven to be unhealthy. It would be so easy to just stop selling them. Only then will your customers think that you actually give a damn about them.
@gasgrillguy
@gasgrillguy 10 жыл бұрын
Bart, I understand your seeing me being wishy washy, but in fairness, local builders have installed thousands of vent free boxes over the last few years and there is no way to vent them without complete removal. I don't want to scare people to death as unvented doesn't exactly cause cancer, but I also don't want to cause a panic either. I really was thinking of new installation customers when I did this video.
