V: Ventilation Q: Perfusion VQ ratio: ratio of the amount of air that enters the lung vs the amount of blood perfused to the lung High VQ ratio: normal ventilation/poor perfusion e.g. PE Low VQ ratio: poor ventilation/normal perfusion e.g. atelectasis VQ mismatch occurs when the amount of air that enters the lung does not match the amount of blood perfused to the lung
