We're now seeing AI that can write code pretty darn well, after being given a simple description of an app/site in plain English. And sure that'll eventually replace programmer jobs, but just a little further down the line, it's not just jobs that could be threatened, whole companies that produce brand-named softwares, could become entirely obsolete, when bosses/CEOs, or even the average consumer, can just ask an AI for an equivalent software, on the fly. Same goes for a lot of things too, not just software..

Sure. It will free people of jobs like that. It’ll also leave them in abject poverty. Nice little world you guys are creating. You’ll “free” people of jobs you personally wouldn’t want but they need to feed their children. The levels of violence that we’ll witness by tens of millions who have nothing to live for as a result of AI will be unprecedented in modern times. We’re $31T in debt, are set to permanently displace millions of workers, and have imported the entire population of Houston every year by way of an open border. Great job, guys. That’ll sure work out. It’s an exceptionally brilliant idea given the fact that Social Security is set to be bankrupt by 2030. Just a stellar job by those in charge. Those who supported this will look at their children the same way that the Iranian students from ‘79 look at theirs, knowing that through naivety they destroyed their futures. It’s amazing to me how so many can be so arrogant and incompetent at the same time.

He is so spot on... it starts with drips and drabs of job functions ... initially, in the 1st generation, it will be nothing too serious, say something like 10% of your job, 5% of my job are automated via robotic processes and AI... this will happen UTR, so to speak, therefore, b/c there is, in most current situations, always something else that we can now take on with that freed-up 5-10% of our daily work capacity, this “cool” new technology will be welcomed and with that, demand for the next iteration and generation will spike, both from workers and owners of capital..... at some point-in-time, the balance between workers having too much to do and then having not enough to do, will flip... this is the turning point wherein we face our strange new world....whether that point-in-time is 10,20 or 30 years down the road, it is coming and will impact every aspect of the globe - people, some species of animals (think food production, pets, extinct species brought back to existence, etc), plants, trees, you name it... IMHO of course

J PR drips and drabs in sectors of the job force that do not have a voice. Like when the grocery store fresh and easy came in with the self check outs. That store eliminated entry level cashier positions. No one really rises up when it comes to the entry level “college kid” jobs but look now...basically all the grocery and big box stores have the self check outs. All customer phone calls go directly to AI. All photo labs are all digitized All secretaries are becoming Virtual assistants What will all us stupid and unmotivated floundering youth do??? Smoke legal weed, procreate, and have babies to crumble Americas society even further and mush more rapidly... Well just look at the stats on “off grid” living maybe we will all congregate in “Slab City”???

Technology -- whether hard or soft -- always reduces jobs. It's never been otherwise. But what it also does is free up resources which will be deployed to support other human needs. The probability is much greater that the onset of AI will be a net *creator* of jobs. Some job categories might disappear, just like the automobile put buggy whip makers out of business. But other, newer job categories will show explosive growth.

But look at all the ghost towns that for example had coal stuff like that. Those towns had mass exudes then other towns/states had floods of people moving to Los Angeles California chasing the dream. That creates a supply and demand for jobs issue. The job market only has so many of the stupid people or dead ender worker positions. Soooo many people are going through this now and are flooding the economy with self employed 1099 people. Theres another problem in itself. Afflak self employment insurance companies and identity theft protection companies is a sure bet!
@lyds6382
@lyds6382 4 жыл бұрын
That’s great, except that all cognitively or physically repetitive jobs will be automated. What, then, can “normal“ people do? There are many people who are not able to be specialists and those people far outnumber those who can. It is not acceptable to abandon an entire segment of the population when we can do something about it. We need UBI soon, and Andrew Yang‘s plan is the best one I have heard so far!

I really don't believe that AI is going to have the impact that many think. To me this sounds more like the anticipated Y2k which came and went and you would never even know. AI is mostly a ploy to sell fear in the form of books, videos, training, air time, etc. Machine learning is a component of AI and it has another name "statistical analysis". Which is the ability to predict based on patterns of previous developments. However this technology does not compensate for the black swan event. No one and nothing can predict black swans.
@lyds6382
@lyds6382 4 жыл бұрын
Pixel Martyr to me, your comment sounds like the guy who thought that the Internet would be no more significant to the world than the fax machine. You can already see this AI happening, think about how much grocery stores have changed just in the past year, much less five years. Think about how many stores have closed because of Amazon. That may not seem like automation but of course it is… You’re ordering online, and your order is primarily filled by robots in their warehouses. Tesla is going to have 1,000,000 driverless taxis on the roads by next year, according to Elon Musk. There are specific claims that may seem silly, but this broader claim is very easy to see happening.

This is nothing new. Just like he said - steam engine, sawing machines, electricity, etc, all displaced a part of the working population. This has happened a number of times in the past and will continue happening in the future. New jobs are always created (ones that we can't even imagine right now) and people will move on. Those who cannot adapt will be left behind. This is the way of the nature. This is how we, as a species, got to where we are today.
@lyds6382
@lyds6382 4 жыл бұрын
James Dillinger he mentions the problem with this way of thinking though… this is a scope and scale far beyond anything that has ever happened before. We have moved past automating human labor and are now automating mental human work as well, and very few jobs will be untouched. It’s possible that we will eventually create enough new jobs, but it will not be fast enough to avoid mass rioting and misery. The industrial revolution came with a heck of a lot of that and it was nothing to the level of job displacement this can cause.

@@newspeed8000 I'm not intrinsically opposed to a UBI scenario, but serious questions need answering prior to attempting it. How does such a thing get implemented without giving government the means of production and distribution? How do we avoid people becoming dependent upon the government for basic survival? Does anyone really trust the government to be a purely benevolent entity? It is filled with constant corruption right now. I think that decentralization is the obvious solution, every community and individual being as autonomous as possible. Industrialized 3D printing can help with that. I don't think that every solution would necessarily work for everyone. Each situation needs to be customized to fit the unique needs required by it. The best solution for 'power' (whatever the form) has always been to spread it out. The US itself is a case study of this, between the separation of powers in government, to the varied layers of government with different spheres of responsibility. The system isn't perfect, but the fact that it has been able to function even with the massive corruption within it is a testament to its durability. Durability was one of the primary goals of the Founders in setting up the USA. Just to point it out, the various alphabet-soup government agencies are largely a symptom of the aforementioned corruption (such as Congress abdicating its responsibilities), not an intrinsic part of the government that the Founders built. In short, just saying "UBI is the answer!" is a bit of a copout without giving serious consideration of how to implement it without suffering from unintended consequences. To borrow the old cliche, it is easier said than done. When trying to solve major world problems, that just isn't enough. I like the UBI and its more evolved RBE cousin, but their implementation will require careful consideration and planning as a hedge against unintended consequences.
@newspeed8000
@newspeed8000 5 жыл бұрын
@@Seastallion just the matter of adaptation, like you said, forefathers didn't put into consideration much about corruption and stuff, but what they did manage is to built flexible enough system, that can change as per the needs of the people in it, and UBI can provide such systems(far better) for the future!
