Lituya Bay is a beautiful inlet on the west coast of SouthEast Alaska which has a history of catastrophic waves the highest of which reached a record height of 1,720 ft. The bar at the entrance into this bay has claimed more than 100 lives in recorded history. This video describes these events and a visit made to the bay in June 2013 in Fleming 65, Venture.

There have been much bigger tsunamus with many orders of magnitude more mass sliding into water and creating megatsunamis, those created by collapsing volcano islands are especcialy epic to watch like Fogo 70 000 years ago.

Oh dear..military wiki says evidence was found on that Soloman Island that survivors...were um eaten. Others escaped in a boat but were not heard of again. Besides storms, piracy was a viable cause of the ships being wrecked and looted. I am curious about the information on the group that escaped cature by boat, was there a log kept, and then found by the discoverers of the wreakage?

When I was 11 years old I learned about tidal waves after reading the account of the Edrie's great escape in Lituya Bay, 1958, in Readers' Digest collection for young people.

Oh that's why they called the island Cenotaph... When first heard the name i though what a macabre name for an Island! Who would thought of calling an island as "Empty grave"? Well... there were people drawn in that bay, but still this name doesn't make justice to this sweet little jewel of the bay.

So I've been doing research and now I know how the wave was that tall! It wasn't a true tsunami as it wasn't caused by the earthquake, rather, the earthquake caused a rock slide so large that is was like a third of the mountain falling. The rockslide pushed the water so violently that the wave reached 1'722 feet! I'm still baffled as to how it moved around the entire bay, and when the rocks hit, it didn't cause a lot of mist to be created... To me it doesn't seem quite possible that a rockslide, no matter the size, could have been able to create such a wave.

If you study geology at length, (as I have) and in so doing, study landslides and fluvial movements on a large scale (even a small scale for that matter), you learn that once large amounts of rock and dirt start to move on such a large scale they take on the 'physical elements' represented in fluid dynamics, ie. wave like properties - zero compression. And as a 'wave' such a body of mass and with such momentum it would impact the water with significant inertia. You only have to look at the size of localised waves from caving glaciers in the region for an example of this. Imagine, as hard as it is, then the enormous displacement of water with this landslide! Imagine too on the eve of darkness, that the noise and consequent tsunami must have been frightening. Should we weight anchor? Have we time? What speed should we attempt to achieve and in which direction (even given you have time) should we turn the bow? Like an earthquake on land...you are at the mercy of the God's, or God as I would say. Given the history of the place, just entering the bay takes some gonads!

Throw a big rock in a pond, it causes a big splash (first wave) then a smaller wave ripples out from it (second wave).
