Hooksets are not free. They are a hard earned skill. There are so many types and ways and that's just for trout! Dry fly hook sets, streamer strip sets, indicator nymphing from a drift boat, trout spey (kinda don't do anything but kinda do...). I was catching rainbows on dries at a mountain pond yesterday. Took me a miss or two to dial in the timing. Such a cool series!

Yeah it's funny how they can eat differently depending on what they're eating/the mood they're in. Good observations.

My biggest takeaway from this video is that all the fish in Wyoming are big and super easy to catch😉 excellent video!

Hahaha. We had a really good day of fishing when we made this video, that's for sure.

The trout hookset is to get tension to the fly and get the fish on the tip of the rod as quickly as possible without pulling the fly away from them.

Act like it’s a fish until you’re sure it’s not.

Fight them to the bank - make them work in the current by turning their head. If you just lift up from above them all they have to do is sit. Turn them and make them swim.

Thanks Spencer. I finally caught my first two trout (both brownies 10-12”) last week after 2 years of trying. Now I’m hooked. I had 7 other misses with one getting off my line dancing on the water. I really think I was too excited and yanked the fly right out of their mouths as I usually had to untangled everything from the elm tree behind me or the honeysuckle vines to the other side. Good info to hear. And 👍to Diet Coke along with Coke Zero.

Is it better to follow big fish down stream to stay close, or stay stationary and bring them to you when they are ready?

In surf fishing we call it "finessing" the fish, saltwater fish have very soft mouths that's why we use circle hooks
@TheIconicFisherman6 ай бұрын
Well honestly, not all saltwater fish have soft mouths the whole reason why certain states require circle hooks is because we allowed Karens to overrun the industry. And even then there are exceptions, in Florida you only have to use circle hooks when using live bait if you are fly fishing for tarpon for example you don't have to use a circle hook legally speaking.

I noticed your rod is no longer in the video after you have the fish in the net. Where are you setting your rod after you have the fish in the net? Is it ok to set the rod in the water?
@venturesflyco5 ай бұрын
We usually place it on the bank. I’ve found the river will try to take it away downstream if you put it in the water.
@I_AM_BAYTOR5 ай бұрын
Hopefully this covers keeping the fish from stealing my damn hopper when I'm about 5' from getting it in the net.
@jessewilson357110 ай бұрын
Do you fight it any differently when you're using light tippet vs heavy?
@venturesflyco10 ай бұрын
Not really. The only difference would maybe be letting the fish run a bit more, and loosening the drag a bit, but the principles are still the same.
@kunaiwithchain52788 ай бұрын
So do fly reels not have a drag system then? I’ve heard sometimes you have to manually palm the reel?
@jimj9863 ай бұрын
Most fly reels now have drag. Click and pawl reels like the Orvis Battenkill do not and you palm them.

do you american fly anglers ever keep the fish you catch? just asking, don’t mean it in a bad way or anything
@venturesflyco2 ай бұрын
Some people do, but the majority of fly anglers practice catch and release here in the US.
@milescobb418410 ай бұрын
With respect your point on not holding the rod high……. I think what you are trying to do is hold the rod in a position that will engage the thicker, stronger part of the rod rather than the thinner, weaker tip. Is that correct?
@venturesflyco10 ай бұрын
Yep, that's it exactly!

Hello, I’m a new for the fly fishing. I’m musician, play violin and viola. I’m originally from Ukraine. In Ukraine fly fishing is not popular, I would like to introduce fly fishing for the Ukrainians and I need a support. I will be very appreciated for any help and support in this. I just got my orvis combo, I’m very low on the budget, and don’t know what kind of flys I need to have. Will be very appreciated for any suggestions! Thank you so much for your understanding. I’m living in Delaware
