Venturing into backyard Chickens! And Assembling our medium OverEZ Chicken Coop

We got chickens! One of the things we value is really all types of DIY, learning how to be self-reliant, and doing our best to bring a small part of a homesteading lifestyle into our lives even though we live in an urban setting. In this video we set up our Medium OverEZ Chicken Coop, and get our first four chickens! We will be doing more little projects in the future as we build them a more permanent habitat.

Thanks! it's a nice coop. My dad has had chickens before, so he has been taking care of them with us. Usually I just dive in and figure things out as I go. It drives my wife crazy.

Hi ! Love the video. Great job.I am close to purchasing one of theses coops, woohoo! I have a few questions. Could you please tell me the floor dimensions of each nesting box along with the height of the boxes, front and back inside. I have big chicks! Want to make sure they can fit before I buy. Thank you very much.

Hi Judy thank you. The nesting boxes are approximately 14 wide by 10, and about 12 inches in the front 10 in the back tall. They should be sufficient for any size hen, they like it to feel kind of enclosed for nesting so even if it sounds a bit tight it should be just fine. It has worked well and our hens seem to like it. It’s pretty easy to clean with the door setup as well.

That’s a real up town chicken coop! Years ago I used to hunt this farm up in WV and the guy had an old ‘50s VW barn door bus he had turned into a chicken coop! I raised Chickens and other poultry when I was a kid, was fun and we got a lot of eggs. Also made some pocket money selling some birds at the auction One problem you have to watch out for with these backyard chickens are dogs, the nicest dog will kill all your chickens if given the chance. You should look into raising rabbits too, good source of meat

Thanks, I normally would have built something but the home improvement stores around here have just been nuts to try to go and get anything at. Ha yeah I have heard of people doing that. If only they knew how much those old busses were worth today... We are going to set up a separated run for them. We have a small one we cobbled together temporarily that we didn't show, but I'll be working on something more permanent and they will have their own space away from the dogs. It probably wouldn't take much convincing to get Mary on board with rabbits...
