I made it 8’ wide. The floor is full 4x8 sheet plus the 2’ x 8’ sheet under the nest box. Then I split the nest box doors into two (8’ door would be heavy). Should match up with the width of the run and haven’t used much more material.

This is just lovely. You are so skilled! I've kept chickens for seven years now, and one small thing I've had to adjust on my coop is the egg door. Mine used to drop down, like yours, but one day it was left open (by a child whose job it is to gather eggs) and a raccoon got in. Super sad. I changed my door to open up instead of drop down, so that it closes with gravity--even if we forget to latch it, it's much more difficult for a predator to get into when they have to push the door up while they scramble inside. It's less convenient for us, of course, but more mistake-forgiving. Edited after I watched the whole thing: I especially love the angled design for the roosts. Sometimes you really do need to be able to get into the coop! How cool.

When I first started raising chickens I had no idea what I was doing after the first year I do so deep into it and learned what chickens were about their Anatomy their food their exercise everything I lived on a 100 and 80.acher farm that I was renting the house from the farmer who is 75 years old I gained so much knowledge from this man it wasn't even funny but I ended up free-ranging the chickens which means when I went to work in the morning at 5 a.m. I open the coop door and they ran around all day and eight frogs and Grasshoppers and mice chickens will eat anything we have a small stream that ran through our land and that's where they got their water from but in their Coop I also had chicken feeders that I bought pellets for but because they were free-range they barely ever ate the pellets we had 20 chickens Easter Eggers.. black ostrolops..rhode island reds..plymouth rock..brahma..we even had bhanty roosters and hens.. I miss them all I miss having the eggs and I miss when I came home from work and all them and come running up to my truck from out of the fields no matter where they were at when they saw my truck coming down their driveway they all came running my driveway was a quarter-mile long Gravel Road

Sometimes all 6 of my hens would lay. Some days only 1 or 2. My rooster would lead my 6 girls around the farm in a line. The double man door for cleaning and the system of a droppings board below the roosts is brilliant. I also like the way you clean often. I tried the deep litter method. It can work but it’s definitely not as clean as it should be inside the coop. And when you do clean, it’s a hell of a mess. I’m setting up my second chicken operation now, five birds will be a good start for the backyard flock. Thanks for the tips.
@meanqkie2240
@meanqkie2240 Жыл бұрын
My deep litter method is large pine shavings in a 6x8 coop. During the winter, the gentle composting action is just enough to prevent frostbite on combs even down to 5 degrees for several days. No ammonia because the shavings pull the moisture out and keep it dry. The chickens keep it mixed, and the poo falls beneath the top layer of shavings to disintegrate as it breaks down the bottom layer of shavings into garden soil. There is no “mat of poo” or layer of filth they are constantly walking on. It’s not a surgical theater either!
@dianeespinoza8647
@dianeespinoza8647 Жыл бұрын
If you coop is a mess doing the deep litter method you probably are not doing it correctly. Read up in composting and green and brown matter. Don’t fool yourself, don’t believe your chickens aren’t pecking and scratching at poo with sand. Chickens love to peck sand too.

Not sure if anyone made this suggestion but on your door to the nesting boxes. You could put a small piece of chain on the sides and small hooks on the sides of the door, So if you want to use the door as a "bench" (work bench not sitting bench) instead of using your knee you just grab the chain and hook it to the door, one side both sides and now your door will sit "workbench" level and you are free to walk about. If you want to drop the door all the way down, you just unhook the chain(s) and let it hang down. Just make sure you use chains of a material that hold up to the outdoor elements so it doesn't rust on ya.

How I have it on my current coop is the top lifts up on the nests boxes. I would have to do something like that because a chicken could get startled and jump out too easy and I always have my (high prey drive) dogs with me as they are waiting for eggs. :) I really like this coop though, very well done.

I love that you're using Sweet PDZ! When my husband and I were in Alaska, we built a coop and used the deep litter method, in part for the insulation properties. We used pine shavings and added to that every day. Instead of a droppings board, we built a litter box under the roosts that we filled with Sweet PDZ. Then twice every day, we used a kitty litter scooper to clean it out. That worked out pretty well for us and our 18 chickens. They are great fun. Thanks for sharing. It is a fantastic coop!

After purchasing a different set of plans, I stumbled across a video on the walk through of this chicken coop on KZbin and decided on these plans. I must say these plans exceeded my expectations. The level of detail and thought put into the plans was remarkable. The plans were versatile and adaptable, allowing me to customize the design to meet my specific needs. I particularly appreciated the ease with which I could make minor modifications to suit my preferences, such as: slanting the boards on the upper perimeter above the dropping board where it attaches to the two coop walls, making cleaning the coop much easier. There were two brilliant features that I didn’t see in any other coop plans: the dropping board and the pull-down nest box door. The dropping board in this coop design makes all the difference in keeping the coop much easier to clean. I would rather clean up and remove droppings than simply add more bedding material on top of it (the deep litter method). It takes me all of about two minutes to clean the coop every couple of days. I used standard metal roofing panels from Lowe’s to cover the entire run. Lowe’s offers 36” wide metal panels in comparison to Home Depot’s 24” wide metal panels. If there was one small change in the plans that I would make it would be the orientation of the windows. I made them as stated in the plans. However, they are a pain to open and close, especially the far one. I wish I would have realized how much easier it would be to open and close them if I would have installed them in reverse so I could open and close them from the outside of the coop. This also would have allowed me to install the protective wire over the window screens on the inside of the coop. It took me a week to build the coop and a week to build the run. This includes using primer and exterior paint (leftover from our house that we had recently painted!) on the non-pressure treated wood. Overall, I am highly satisfied with the purchase and would recommend these plans to anyone looking to build their own chicken coop.

I used some of your ideas on our Coop/Run. We added a shed to the side of the coop for storage etc. Ours is not as fancy as yours lol. We made the wall go straight up above the Layer Door to enlarge the inside of the coop and add another roosting bar. We used sand on all surfaces adding refresher because even though it is safe for them to eat, the refresher is not supposed to be used alone but rather with bedding. Our plastic rakes of different sizes work great for cleaning out the coop and run. Sliding the rake a little sideways as raking gets all the small stuff. I really like those laying mats. real nice. I also like how you use the "extra" boxes for storage. Smart choices throughout. Do the curtains make a difference? I've never seen that before either. I have a stop chain on my drop door that is just clipped on so I can drop all the way if I want it. Totally agree, you absolutely need cross ventilation. Metal roofs are just way easier to build, to maintain, and to collect water. That droppings board is a very interesting idea. I'm stealing that for my next coop. And the cleaning stick. I don't like the deep litter method at all. All that gas and decay directly below your chickens, and no way to scratch feed them on bad days in the winter. No, your method is far superior. I have my chickens in my garden, they do all the weeding and keep away rabbits and pests, so I don't have much a run for bad days. I'm also going to use that auto door. Very impressed with your design.

@SuzanPlummer
@SuzanPlummer 2 жыл бұрын
@@askinator7850 it was very easy. Did the sides in our garage. Also, did cut the wood sizes inside, then took outside where it was going to be put. I did have a problem with the door you open to gather the eggs. Made it work by cutting the trim shorter. Now the inside stays dry. I just wish I had built it larger for more chickens. I have 9 in it now. If everything goes good with my hens, I will build another beside the current one. I think I could take the doors off and connect them that way. I would need an extra long scooper I copied from the one he made. Oh to connect the runs, I could cut the wire from a couple of the lower run panels. Just an idea to have a larger coop later.

I have your plans saved for when I have more room and can build a bigger coop and run - I think it's an excellent design that addresses a lot of construction and chicken-care issues and that my family will be able to build without much carpentry knowledge! I'd love to see an update video in the spring/summer to see how the coop handled the winter (e.g. the humidity/condensation comment from a few months ago). I'll be building in a colder environment than you but I think this could easily be winterized for this climate. Can't wait for more chicken videos!!

Hi there. I love the design. I like the run and the hanging baskets. The baskets take that medicinal look out of the coop. The only thing I would have done is paint the run to match nesting side. You did a fabulous job. With those skills you could build these for people who want to get started and don't have the ability to do it themselves and get a few bucks too. Thanks for showing us this your a good man. Stay safe out there. Take care and God bless.

I really enjoy your videos about raising chickens. I'm a chicken enthusiast and a farm owner, and I've always been looking for ways to make chicken keeping easier. I have a really cool automatic poultry waterer that connects directly to a faucet, so you’ll never have to refill their water daily again. It’s been very popular on Amazon, and I’m sure your fans would love it too. If you’re interested, I’d be happy to send you one to try out. If you like it, maybe you could make a video to help promote it, and you can earn a commission as well.

80% of the way into my build. Note, if you use Apple Pay to buy the plans make sure you save them. Didn’t have an account so I had to make an account and then repurchase. With that said this coop build takes some time but overall not too bad. I extended the coop to 8 feet and the run to 17.5 feet. Getting the roof on is going to be a journey 😂

Looks like a great coop but I am curious if you have enough room to put food and water inside for the winter and how do you keep your water from freezing? Did you run electricity to the house? Just curious if you have gone thru a winter yet and if so how are you keeping the water from freezing.

Recommend 💯- built mine 2 years ago and is still holding up great. I had to upgrade the egg door latches due to a bear ripping off the first ones (he couldn’t get in tho!) we had another bear try to break in the next year without success. Great coop design that looks great in our backyard!

So, earlier this year, I bought the coop plans. I did hours (and hours) or research and found that this design was the best design for our needs and location of the coop & run. The plans were easy to follow and the build went easy enough. I received my 9 day-old chicks in early April and finished the coop in mid June, so just in time for the transition from brooder to coop! I use the run-chicken automatic door. The first few days I kept the chicks in the coop part but soon set up the door to open and close daily for them. They were familiar with the run since we were bringing them out daily for a few hours to acclimate them. The nesting boxes were closed off until about the end of July. I opened 2 of the nest boxes complete with porcelain eggs to give them the idea of where to lay. Well, in mud-August the first egg appeared! The chickens are now 6 months old and I'm getting 6 to 9 eggs a day. 4 of the 5 nesting boxes are open but they seem to just like to use 2 of them. I would not change the design at all except I eliminated the center post under the "poop board" to allow better access to the coop floor and put a cross beam down the center underside for stability.. The outside wall on the left side of the coop would be ideal to build an add-on storage closet to hold the DE and PDZ and maybe a few other things. All in all, it's the best coop/run design I could ask for. Thanks for all the effort you put into this design. 🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔

Just finished building the coop, but made a couple of mistakes. My advise: don't try to outsmart the plans. I installed the cover of the nesting boxes under the siding instead of outside the siding as the plans indicate. I thought it would help prevent water intrusion into the boxes. Yeah, the exact opposite happened. The cover is now shorter and doesn't fully extend over the box door. Now I have to try and rig some flashing under it. Excellent design! Love the coop. Thanks man.
