What I don’t understand is how did we go from synths with 16-part multitimbral engines 30 years ago (JV/XV, Wavestation, etc) to $5k synths today that only have 4 parts (the wavestate is another offender, albeit cheaper). Why are we regressing? Apart from the Blofeld, Essence FM, and the Integra-7, there’s not much out there with those features, and two of those three are more than a decade old at this point.
@tezeta3725 Жыл бұрын
I've wondered the same thing. Its kinda a similar story with samplers. I get that part of it is because of cheaper units in order to target more casual musicians, but even a lot of the pricey stuff is way more limited than it used to be.

It’s marketing now. “Omg you can make it like 80ies synth but no aliasing wooooooow”. Net outcome: nothing much beyond a 5k price tag. No one listens to an 80ies song and go “if only it weren’t for the aliasing”. This is niche market crap.

There are plenty of multitimbral instruments out there nowadays, what are you on about? Pretty much all of the notable arranger keyboards, workstation keyboards, backing track modules, Wersi and Yamaha electric organs and a lot of the samplers. There are plenty of options to choose from if you actually need multi-timbrality in hardware (which not even most professionals do nowadays because of the convenience of the DAW).

The 3rd Wave is at its heart a wavetable synthesizer with PPG and modern modes, but it does so much more, (sampling, analog, FM, sequencing, MPC etc), and sounds great doing it. Plus... 24 voices and 4 parts always available. It sounds so good IMHO because the synth is doing exactly what it says it is doing without any compromised signal processing, electrical components or signal paths. We made it do everything it is doing, including the analog path, as inexpensively as a very small company could do it, without cheaping out on anything that you are hearing, seeing, or touching.

Cool but there are so many cool VSTs, often for free, that can do the same, if not better. And even if you want to use hardware, for that money you can start building yourself a modular synth. To me, synths like this are just there to look pretty. Those that want the sound use software. Those that want the hardware would rather spend the money on something that was found in an East German skip that smells faintly of rat pee when you turn it on.

@DKH7129 ай бұрын
No it has 24 voices and 4 layers, meaning it can do 4 different presets at the same time and it distributes the 24 voices over those 4 presets. The reason it only has 24 voices is that it has an analog filter on all these 24 voices, so that's 24 separate filter chips (those can get expensive). If you want high quality emulation of analog filters on a PC, your best bet is a VST like U-He Diva. If you open up 4 different instances of Diva with some complex presets and in total 24 voices there's actually a decent chance you'll overload your CPU (if you have an average computer). So yeah it's more impressive than you think. 3500 is still hella expensive though, but there is a decent reason for the price.
