Carlos, thank you for providing the part kit for the rebuild. The rebuild is a breeze, removing the cap a bear. I used penetrating oil ahead of the rebuild, although not sure how much of a help it was. Once I was able to loosen the cap it did spin off easily. There was zero sign of corrosion on the cap or threads. If or should I say when I need to do another, I will try pb blaster and a spanner wrench, then heat and the dry ice technique to avoid damaging the cap. As I mentioned in my email the air hammer eventually broke the cap loose.

Thanks for this very thorough video. My kits came today, and the first pair of cylinders are ready to go back on the boat. I'll hold off on the second pair until I see how my first two went. Best regards, Mark Melbourne FL

Thanks for the video.. I did the repair but used new pistons. A map torch and dry ice worked really well. No force at all was required after heating the cylinder to 170f and them applying dry ice to the cap...spun right off..

Is it possible to do this repair in the water? i.e. just do a rod kit and leave the lower part of the cylinder attached? Its hard to tell from the video if there is enough room to wiggle the rod assembly out without other stuff being in the way? Thanks

When unscrewing the rod, there is a small roll pin to remove. HoW did you remove that? Rod won't turn with it still in place.
@koshlives79213 жыл бұрын
Figure it out. Roll pin was a red herring. Only there to hold a ball bearing in place, not to hold piece from unscrewing (roll Pin does not go all the way threw. )

Anyone who is watching it. be prepared at bout 5:10 - it IS NOT THAT EASY. After cycling though all the DIY options- went out and purchased a tool for $80 - it split apart before breaking the seal. it is not possible with a drill bit and a wrench for sure.

Hey boss it sucks that you had yours on there so damn tight. It does happen. I did 3 of my 4 cylinders with drill bits. I did have one that was really on there and I used a screw bit, like the ones I use to remove the cylinder Piston. I do recommend using pb blaster on the cap the day before. The spanner tool is always better.

Hello Carlos, I am working on my 2008 225 Verado that has a slight leak on the starboard trim cylinder. Thank you making the video. I would like to obtain just the o-rings and seals in lieu of replacing the whole cylinder for $400, the Trim rod for $200 and having to buy the mercury seal kit for $100. Reviewing the Mercury parts catalog the 2 option Mercury offers A. being the trim rod kit 896157A01 the retails for around $200. I am not sure that this kit includes the require o rings in part group 3 896158A01 o-ring kit which runs around $100. B. purchasing the entire Trm Cylinder Kit 8M0118298. I spoke to 5 Star Marine www.trimandtilt.com/index.html in Fl, they do not have this kit today, they are in the process of having one in the future. So do you have a parts list to order the seals and o-rings needed. Otherwise it seems to make sense to order the 8M0118298 Trim Cylinder Kit, (bolt on as a labor saver option).
