Welcome to today's video. Did we renovate today? Hungarian pencil sharpener STUDIUM 717.
This sharpener is from the 1950s. It is made of sheet metal on the outside and part of it is made of aluminum on the inside.
The sharpener is used to restore the tip of a pencil or crayon.
When writing, drawing or sketching, none of us avoids the moment when a pencil or crayon needs to be sharpened.
Sharpeners can be divided into two groups:
Classic - which is a sharpener with one blade
And milling machines - and these are two milling machines facing each other, these sharpeners are usually hand-cranked or electric.
The first sharpener patent appeared already in 1828 under the number # 2444, registered by the French mathematician Bernard Lassimone.
Other patents are from 1860, but sharpeners began to be produced on a large scale between 1884 and 1915, mostly mechanical types.
And the pencil is an integral part of the sharpener, so it is worth mentioning that the first production of pencils was patented by the French chemist Nicolas Conte, and what were pencils sharpened earlier?
I think they probably used an ordinary knife :) And what do you think? Write to us in the comments.
If you liked our video, give us your subscription, like and don't forget to share with your friends :)
Thanks for watching, I look forward to seeing you again in the next video :)
During today's renovation, I unfortunately did not achieve the functionality of the sharpener. I think the sharpener was not complete and therefore not working. I would like to ask you, if you have this sharpener and you can advise me what is wrong, I will be glad, thank you Radek. Any photos, please email: veradona@email.cz

Despite missing a piece or two, this was another beautiful restoration. Radek, you are very talented and take very good care of these antiques. It's always a pleasure to see Veronika give a description of how the restoration works. She is definitely a beautiful addition to your videos. Please tell her that I miss her tasty recipes. I wish you both many blessings during this upcoming week. Thanks to both of you for another brilliant video. 😊 👍👍👍

My great grandpa always carried a pencil sharpener in a pants pocket. He called it his jackknife of all trades. He kept the blades sharp and they never failed him. It was buried with him. He would be proud of your efforts here.

Another term, that fell out of usage, was the 'pen knife' (probably a contraction of pencil knife), which was _much_ smaller than a typical jackknife.

I found another Studium 717 online which had an image of it opened up,I had to blow it up to see but you are missing a part,the blade itself,it looks like a 6 blade boat propeller and goes on the shaft at 16:51. I did quite a bit of searching but I had no luck on finding a replacement.

Thanks again for the time you spend for us in your restorations and sharing I appreciate very much . I’m really admiring the people who designed these objects the hours and hours of designing where every single piece is studied is one of the first things I see when I look at an object and in some way the restorations you do is their to pay tribute therefore bravo and thank you .

The first inactive tetanus toxoid was discovered and produced in 1924. This vaccine proved successful when it was used to prevent tetanus in the military during World War II, but this sharpener was invented in 1828, so there was no vaccine, so : why use a rusty knife⁉️

There are times when you want a really fine point on your pencil. A pencil sharpener does it better than a knife.
@rwagjr
@rwagjr 2 жыл бұрын
@@Marcelo-56 I wasn't suggesting to use a rusty knife, nor was I questioning the beauty of the design or the resultant function. I'm amazed at the hours spent to engineer the product, produce special tools to make the dozens of intricate parts, the labor to assemble it all, and then Market a device which one could replicate the result by nailing a blade onto a piece of wood with a hole drilled in it! My comment was meant to question the design, production and sale of the item. I can't imagine the effort was worth the final product.

@@rwagjr Which is why I said that sometimes a pencil sharpener is what you need, since it does a better job than a knife does in getting a sharp point. I take it that you don't do drawings, either artistic or engineering drawings. I once saw on a KZbin channel, I don't believe it was Verdona, someone restoring a machine to peel apples. The machine seemed unnecessarily complicated, although it did do a better and considerably faster job than just a knife or a hand peeler. Then I thought, "If this is a bakery, and I have to peel a couple of dozen apples, this machine makes a lot of sense.

Beautiful restoration as usual, however I’m always amazed how some inventions are over engineered in their initial creation. I’m not surprised that there are missing parts.

The small folding pocketknives people carry are still sometimes referred to as penknives, because they used to be used for sharpening quill pens and pencils once they became a more ubiquitous thing.

That is one complicated sharpener.. if I was doing that restoration, it would have been a bag full of useless parts.. Nice work as always VR... Hope all is well with you in your country.. Take care my friends...

This was way above my pay level. All I can tell is 1. Great restoration and 2. This was the beta model, now small children in China churn out bits of plastic with a small blade by the million, and it does a better job. Thanks for the video Radek and the interesting history from your wife. She's integral to the videos now and her research and your skill makes you a phenomenal team.

😠 - consisting of Chineseum crap = too much force will break the plastic, and the blade will quickly dull, shredding the pencil and snapping the graphite tip repeatedly. The antique in the video is a far better quality, built like a tank, and will properly sharpen the pencil for many years

Great video as usual, you are correct most people used a pen knife 🔪 to sharpen pencils. Most carpenters still do!
