Can the same method be done without being hard wired into LAN? I don't have a long cable laying around to complete this method

Yes it can. You just need to power the VeraPlus up. A 12V battery can even be rigged up to power it.

Get yourself a Wi-Fi repeater with Ethernet Jack. Connect the repeater to your Wi-Fi connection then where ever you need to plug it into plug it in with the Ethernet plug into the repeater and the end to the hub, and plug the hub into power. I know it works. I done it.
