I used this stuff to get out of a situation where a guy was threatening me with a knife. Sometimes you can appeal to someone's sense of humanity or humor and ease the tension. Sure, the guy took my phone and money but I actually made him laugh and he gave me back the rest of my stuff like driver's license, my inhaler and car keys. It was still a crappy situation but there wasn't much I could do to get out of it because I was injured, hiking on the side of a cliff and he caught me in a place I couldn't get out of. I took a deep breath and just started to talk to him as I gave him my stuff. I thought about different takedowns I could use but I knew he actually wasn't trying to hurt me. If I did something physical, we could both get hurt or fall to our deaths off the cliff. I wanted to go home to my kids so I talked my way out of it. I truly believe talking can go a long way in changing the tide in a potentially bad situation. I also used to work with at-risk youth so I already have some of those de-escalation skills and I find them very useful when talking to aggressive people.

thanks for sharing, i hope to never be in a situation like that without my clinch pick 2.0 double edge. For sure talk your way out, then maybe without error deadly strike to ensure immediate safety. stay safe out there man

I've worked in customer service for about 5 years. Verbal judo is king. My coworkers are often surprised about how little I argue with people. I will kiss up. I will apologize for something that isn't my fault. When I used to teach karate I used to tell the kids that I care way more about not getting punched than I care about who's right. For my job, I usually got a line of customers so I can't sit here and argue.

I am a sub teacher for the county- when I have a problem that can turn bad with a student i tell them -"I am 81 years old and just want you to be OK- it helps and does calm the student down many times...Its the same principle that he is talking about- I call it verbal judo.

Four minutes. Bam! No wasted effort. No "You know, a lot of my subscribers keep asking me to do a video on..." or "I keep seeing in the comments about ___ so I guess it's time to talk about..."

When I first joined LE, a veteran officer told me "It's easier to kiss someones ass all the way to jail, than it is to kick their ass all the way to jail." Same goes for this. Unfortunately most people let their mouths get them into a confrontation, instead of out of one.

I do not agree with fake or false conversation. You can be honest but not threatening or aggressive. With new DV bodycams or cell 📱 video, you may look like a liar or deceptive in court.

DL Lambert need to read Frazier v. Cupp and other case law that cite Frazier v. Cupp. and I would also recommend taking a class on interviews and interrogations.

DL Lambert however in this no one is saying to be deceitful, just talk to people like human beings and let them hold on to a little scrap of dignity, and you often avoid confrontation.

Good topic.....not sure I would want to admit fault though, given our incredibly litigious culture....Thanks for the video!

Typical Lawyer thought! Takes one to know one I guess. I think its all situationally dependent. If presented with an unknown contact to manage, it may be best to diffuse the exigent, potentially violent problem at the risk of having to articulate why you made admissions that you otherwise would not have down the road in a civil context.

G Galilei you could even potentially tell the cop that you were afraid the guy was going to attack you so you said whatever was needed to keep him calm. The cop may end up framing the other guy (in his report) to look like the aggressor (which is good, because in this scenario he really would be).

Admitting fault in a day and age where video and cell phones are everywhere is NOT a wise choice, especially if you think "I can clean this up, later..."

Yeah. Don't admit fault for any reason unless it really was your fault and you're willing to accept fault for what happened.

Can you train at the library for this or do you just get a dictionary and read words while standing in front of a mirror?

If you claim to that guy that you hit him he'll say you did when the cops get there and then they'll ask you if you said that. Then everything you say is questionable.

B Willie Now you're out 2000 bucks for damages and your insurance rate gets jacked up for years, for an accident that wasn't your fault. Great job on admitting fault moron. Many other intelligent ways to verbally deescalate.

I do not agree with the label: "verbal judo". Its not appropriate or correct. People do not always respond to verbal commands or they might be on drugs, alcohol, etc they are not always going to be receptive.
