Verbs of Motion: ИДТИ, ПОЙТИ, ХОДИТЬ in Past, Present and Future Tenses |Learn Russian
In this video I want to tell about the differences between ИДТИ, ПОЙТИ and ХОДИТЬ and show you these words in different tenses.
You don’t need to try to remember all these verbs, choose only those you are going to use often.
To go has a lot of translations in Russian - идти, пойти, ходить, поехать, выйти, выходить, зайти, заходить, сходить
ИДТИ and ХОДИТЬ are imperfective verbs
ПОЙТИ is an perfective verb
I want to remind you the rule about Perfective & Imperfective Verbs
In short,
Perfective Verbs describe actions that have been completed or will be completed. They can’t express actions in the Present Tense.
I’ve read this book - Я прочитала эту книгу
Imperfective Verbs are used to describe uncompleted actions.
Imperfective verbs describe something that you are doing now, or something that you used to do/do/will be doing regularly (repeated/habitual actions).
I read a lot of books - Я читаю много книг
1. идти - to go on foot
- Focusing on the process
- Only this moment
- One direction
- At the moment of motion something else
was (or is) happening
Here is for you conjugation of the verb ИДТИ
я иду (for both genders, no matter what gender)
ты идёшь (to male and to a female)
он идёт
она идёт
оно идёт
мы идём
вы идёте
они иду
Сейчас я иду на работу (This moment and one direction)
I’m going to work now
Сегодня мы идём в театр (This moment and one direction)
Tonight we are going to the theatre.
• Куда ты идешь? Where are you going?
• Я иду в музей I'm going to a museum
The past form of imperfective verb ИДТИ is
я шла /шёл
ты шла/ шёл
он шёл
она шла
оно шло
мы шли
вы шли
они шли
Вчера я шел на работу и увидел Уилла Смита
Yesterday I was going to work and saw Will Smith
At the moment of motion I saw Will Smith
Мы шли два дня
We walked for two days
(Focusing on the process)
If you want to say “to go” in the Future
Я буду идти
Ты будешь идти
Он будет идти
Она будет идти
Оно будет идти
Мы будем идти
Вы будете идти
Они будут идти
I will walk to this park for 20 minutes
Я буду идти до этого парка 20 минут (One direction)
I don’t want to explain more about the future of the verb ИДТИ because we don’t use it a lot. If you want to ask in Russian: Will you go to the cinema tomorrow? You use the future form of the perfective verb ПОЙТИ
2) Пойти
Is the perfective verb which is not used in the Present Tense. Use the imperfective verb идти instead.
Я пойду
Ты пойдешь
Он пойдет
Она пойдет
Оно пойдет
Мы пойдём
Вы пойдете
Они пойдут
Will you go to the cinema tomorrow? - Ты пойдёшь в кино завтра?
Yes, I will - Да, я пойду
I will go, if you go - Я пойду, если ты пойдешь
They will go to the cinema tomorrow - Они пойдут в кинотеатр завтра
To make the PAST tense, you add the prefix -ПО to the past form of ИДТИ
Я пошла/пошёл
Ты пошла/пошел
Он пошёл
Она пошла
Оно пошло
Мы пошли
Вы пошли
Они пошли
They went to a party without me (we have a result that’s why we use a perfective verb)
Они пошли на вечеринку без меня
She went to a barber - Она пошла к парикмахеру
3. ходить - to go on foot
-regular action
 Всегда - always
 Обычно - usually
 Часто - often
 Иногда - sometimes
 Редко - hardly ever
 Никогда - never
-or movement to different directions (back and forth)
Я хожу
Ты ходишь
Он ходит
Она ходит
Они ходят
Мы ходим
Вы ходите
Они ходят
Каждый день я хожу на работу
Every day I go to work (back and forth and regular action)
Обычно я хожу в магазин пешком
I usually go to the shop by foot (back and forth and we see the word USUALLY)
PAST TENSE
Я ходила /Я ходил
Ты ходила/Ты ходил
Он ходил
Она ходила
Оно ходило
Мы ходили
Вы ходили
Они ходили
Вчера я ходил в парк
Yesterday, I went to a park (back and forth)
We went to the cinema last week (back and forth)
Мы ходили в кино на прошлой неделе
FUTURE TENSE

Did you want to say "Он будет идти в школу"? The meaning of this sentence is "He will be going to school". He will go to school - Он пойдет в школу Great! But in this lesson there wasn't the word "поедет" :)

Thanks Daria. Very helpful but you always sound "ом и ем и ам" after most of words. Its your Russian accent or any other rule.? N next time can you please add stress marks and these verbs of motion cases. Like идти is for prepositional case or Accusative? Like that. N how we end the endings of word with it. University.work school etc. Thanks for videos

Daria, you did great, but the subject itself is difficult and I wish you could make more examples from both correct and incorrect sentences to say which one is incorrect and why.

Is there some kind of rule when you use ПОЙТИ rather than ИДТИ for future actions? I mean, in the sentence where you are going to the cinema tonight, it's also in the future. If you say "I want to go ..." you also use ПОЙТИ. I think in some cases you can use both... but are there any rules or is it just your preference which one to use?

@@anitamiszewska126 Hm, are you guys really always thinking about what exactly you want to say in a situation when talking fast in a real-life situation? I imagine that it must be hard to always "have to be" so precise ;-) But maybe that's just normal for these languages and it comes naturally as a native.

Они шли на маркете и купили лимонов. Я пойду в библиотеку вечером. Вы должна ходить па станции метро. What does the comment mean "ходить is in the class of Russian abstract verbs. Its counterparts, идти and пойти́, are concrete verbs."?
@RussianwithDariaMikhay
@RussianwithDariaMikhay 6 жыл бұрын
Шли shows the process. Пошли is a completed action. You should say: Они пошли на рынок и купили лимонов. Вы должны ходить по станции метро. Could you write it in English? Sorry, but I don't know the answers to your questions.
@stevenrobbins3180
@stevenrobbins3180 6 жыл бұрын
I was trying to use "ходить" but it came out wrong. English: You must walk to the metro station. Incorrect Russian: Вы должны ходить по станции метро. Correct Russian (translated from English by Google): Вы должны дойти до станции метро.
@RussianwithDariaMikhay
@RussianwithDariaMikhay 6 жыл бұрын
Or you may also say: Вы должны пойти к метро or Вы должны идти к метро or google variant Вы должны дойти до метро
