My parents bought me up listening to Opera and classical music and this is one of my favourite operas. I use to sit with my late Dad listening to this and I use to sing along with it not really knowing what they were singing I was only 7or 8 yrs old. I loved the anvil it was so loud and strong. I have bought my son up with music but I am not sure if he really shares my love of opera and classical music. As my Dad use to say to me this music will live forever. And if he was still alive he'd be watching this with me... Thank you for bringing back happy memories for me. Happy 2022 may you all be safe...

I'm kinda the odd one out in my family. Everybody else listens to hip hop, rap music, trance etc but I'm all about the opera. I used to be into dance music in my teens but wouldn't touch it with a barge pole now. Opera helps me to relax, enriches my life, excites my mind and educates my ears. I much prefer sopranos over tenors as they can reach much higher notes which I like. I would say that Cecelia Bartoli and Anna Netrebko are my favorite singers of the opera but that Angela Gheorghiu also deserves a mention ...

@@charlieparker4028 I don't like the trend to "modernize" opera. It is often done in the belief that it will bring new people to opera, but it does not, although it may make opera lovers stay away.

@@luvmuzik4me My dad is a good example of the "did not work" crowd. When my mom took him to watch an opera, his reaction was to say "Mm... I suppose it wasn't that bad, for shrieking." @@luvmuzik4me I mean, I love opera and ballet but I'm still intrigued by modernizations. My favorite version of Sleeping Beauty lately is Matthew Bourne's, which set the first half at the turn of the 1900's and the second half in the 2000s. Modernization isn't an inherently bad trend, it just doesn't always hit right.

It is titled "2016 il trovatore royal opera house full opera" I got it quite reasonable on e-bay, and the advantage is no commercials like here, and you can watch it indefinitely. Some modernizations work. I saw a contemporary set Fidelio and it was very seamless. So it depends on the story and the setting of the Opera in the modern context. There's a notorious production at the Lyric Opera of Chicago where they set Tannhauser in the arrivals lounge of O'Hare airport. That's just kooky and no wonder people hated that.

Tragic! The minimalistic ROH productions of today compare badly with the lavish settings of the 60s, of which the breathtaking opening banquet scene of Rigoletto is a perfect example. For what they charge the public deserve better!

In 2013 I saw a simulcast of the Met's production of _Rigoletto_ that re-set the opera in Las Vegas (and in the opening numbers used Rat-Pack-era slang in the subtitles). The Duke was a popular singer, and Sparafucile was a hit man with a night club. And back in 2004 I was in an amateur production of Gilbert and Sullivan's _Ruddigore_ that re-set the operetta in 1960's Carnaby Street--complete with a mural showing Gilbert and Sullivan in the yellow submarine with the Beatles.
