I can't think of any operatic prelude or overture which catches the mood of the tragic story which will unfold better than this one - Verdi was a genius. Lovely performance - only to be expected from an orchestra which must be steeped in this music, but all credit to the conductor too. She shaped the phrases beautifully and her control of dynamics was also exemplary.

@@omareceballos2980 Perhaps, but it doesn't have an overture as such and the emotions are raw and exposed. This prelude holds such a wealth of suppressed tragedy just waiting to burst out and overwhelm the characters in the story and us, the audience. I can't think of any overture or prelude which does it better.

Yes! I had never seen an opera and was ready to be bored...then the first notes sent shivers down my spine and I started crying. Needless to say, I love operas now but none since have ever hit me this hard! Even now I’m crying after all these years...
