I think a person would be happy with either, beats splitting by hand. I remember your old splitter, I believed I named it Chuck. Geez, that last time you tried to start it, didn't you pull it like 60+ times!? We can all have a good laugh now, but you were one unhappy Canadian at the time. Your moving up in the world! Take care.🍁🍁🍁🍁

For a solo firewood operation the Axis (or any commercial vertical splitter) is the way to go, IMHO. You get total control over split size and it will handle any size round. For the 12-22 or horizontal commercial splitters, the bottleneck is getting the wood to the spltter and away from the splitter. It really needs 2 or 3 people to maximize it's capabilities. The 6 way wedge is not that effective unless you have the perfect diameter round. Otherwise you have to resplit. I think the tall 4 way wedge is best along with a box wedge. On a side note, there is another entry in the fast cycle time vertical splitters. It is the Split Fire 1165V. I think it fills the void between the box store glacier splitters and the entry level commercial splitters (Ultra among others).

That is a great comparison Sandy. For quick production I love my 22-28 with box wedge and attached conveyor. I think the Axis would be better for precise bundle wood splits.

good morning Sandy myself i believe my choice would be the axis because of the control of the size of wood if you really compere the two you had out there the 22-28 your pieces were bigger if you would of split around the size of those on the axis you would of been faster with the axis a little but not as fast of the 22-28 but the conveyor belt also makes a big plus on the axis but to witch is own to the preference of witch machine and how much wood you produce in a year also have a great day

Hello Sandy. I like the one you have with the conveyor. I imagine that EASTONMADE has a unit where you just put the entire log on and go to town with it. That machine might not be able to be transported to where you want to use it on your property. Have good days!

Sandy, if it were my choice I'd take the vertical splitter with the conveyor. That said, one man buys a Volkswagen while his neighbor buys a Porsche. Whatever works best for you is the machine to get.

Excellent comparaison Sandy ! That answers some of my questions about the axis. Getting more and more sold on it! The new version really seems to be fast! Almost too fast after few hours when your attention and focus may slip up a bit! (time for a good old "sludge" break then! " Tks again and keep up the good work sandy! Any email adress i can contact you at for various questions ? happy to give you mine (where?)

That horizontal machine could work a man to death. Hard to imagine the quantity of big firewood you could produce in a day if you had all your rounds ready.

The 12-22 is a Good Machine if your doing Production which Requires a Second Person, The Axis is a Good machine if your working on your own it produces better wood then the 12-22, Both of them Are Excellent, If Your Doing Production 12-22 is the way to go, If Your working on your own or your doing bundle wood or Boiler Wood the Axis is the way to Go,

Great job Sandy in explaining the differences in these two types of splitters that are as different as apples and oranges! Like we have talked about before, if you had larger, clear rounds, and add a conveyor to the horizontal, the speed that it can produce basic wedge splits is unbelievable, key word is basic!! Any time that you work around knots, or smaller pieces, or even squares, that vertical is second to none!!
@sawingwithsandy

Great review Sandy! Eastonmade does produce some very nice machines! I looked at the Ultra and the Axis when I decided to buy a commercial unit, but just couldn't afford the Axis. I really wanted a vertical splitter for many of the reasons you mentioned, so went with a Timber Devil made in Quebec. It's not as beefy as the Axis, but it's fast and has handled everything I've thrown at it. It's the same price point as the Ultra. Even without a conveyor I just set up two totes at the opposite end of the log lift. The wood to sell gets chucked in one, and the not so nice pieces go in the other for me to burn. It is fun making square wood! 😁 I split mine a bit on the smaller side as I sell to a lot of backyard campers. You can always make a big fire with small pieces, but it's tough to make a small fire with big pieces!
@sawingwithsandy

seems to me that you were more particular while using the one loading the tote. in my day splitting was done with a 12lb maul. powered by armstrong. btw, where's the coffee?
@sawingwithsandy
@sawingwithsandy 5 күн бұрын
Hey there Fred! That 12lb maul would get ya into shape in a hurry no doubt. Sludge was back at the shop today. I was quick to draw and finished it off in short order. One of these days I"ll remember to get out my old sludge maker and have it around with me.

There is just something about that 12 22 design that is wrong...IMHO you are stuck in one position basically behind the log lift. A good splitter is really easy to move around, gather rounds, move splits etc
@sawingwithsandy
@sawingwithsandy 5 күн бұрын
I think with the 12-22 to keep production up it seems like you'd want to stand on the log lift side just so that you can continually put rounds onto the log lift as the auto cycle is moving

Vertical splitters are the way to go. Seems like a lot less waste and mess to clean up afterwards with more time for a cold one. Out in the forest, splitting wood can be a great way to enjoy life.

As much as the Axis is a fine machine, I would have to go with something like the Ultra, just on price alone. And now that I'm out of the wheelchair and using a walker, it's worth looking into getting something like it, for next spring anyway lol. I haven't been able to do anything outside since July 1st, not even little things, and I am sick of sitting around. Good vid. Thanks.

You need to use a pickeroon to save on the back. I hook the wood and drag it to the lift without bending over. I use the Logrite version.i primarily use the pizza wedge on my 12-22. It works great and I love the extended tray option which allows me to sort the wood coming out of the pizza wedge
