I was looking forward to you reviewing Close To The Edge, but you made a major, _major_ mistake in not listening to the studio version first. I get that people are curious about what a band looks like & all, but one of the most supremely admirable things about YES' masterpieces is the perfection they achieved in the studio mix. Close To The Edge is such a perfect sonic creation in its studio manifestation, I doubt any band will ever match it. This live performance doesn't come close to doing it justice. It's a song that is difficult to reproduce on stage. Those who love it will find the parts they love, but it's such a pale imitation of greatness. Another first listener to Close To The Edge did the same thing you did, got a LOT of feedback in the comments that he should listen to the studio version. So he did it and his eyes were opened. He said that though he had watched the vid, he hadn't really _heard_ the song & was blown away. He even reprimanded his audience for steering him to the live version when the studio version was so much better. Please do yourself a favor & _now_ treat yourself to the studio version. You won't regret it.

Thanks for all your reviews, I love to see how much you enjoy discovering new music, or should I say old music? lol. This live performance was at Queens Park Rangers football stadium in London & their record attendance for a football match in 1974 was 34,000, so you would have to subtract how many people to fill one end & add how many to fill the pitch. This live version (6/10) is okay but the studio version (10/10) with the amazing Rick Wakeman on keys is absolutely perfect in all ways. Give it a listen and do not worry there is no video because Yes could build amazing soundscapes without any video. But you must listen to the original studio version with Rick's magnificent and majestic keyboard playing. I think Patrick played about with the keyboard parts too much and made them sound a bit like Dr Who at times. Don't get me wrong Patrick is a great keyboard player and to listen to him on Relayer is a must but he is different to Rick Wakeman.

One thing you missed out on from this instead of the studio version is the great bass playing of Chris Squire. Also, the high mix of the cymbals drowned out a lot of the vocals and the rest of the instruments. You can hear everything much clearer on the studio version.

This is unfortunately about the worst live performance one could pick to evaluate this song. As others have mentioned, I'd highly suggest the studio version first. And after you could probably pick just about any other live version and it would be better than this. The studio version has masterful playing from Bill Bruford, the original drummer who is far more subtle than Alan White (RIP) and Rick Wakeman, whose style and playing is far more appropriate to the music than Patrick Moraz. Now before people get pissy about Pat Moraz, I think he was great on Relayer.

After I read my comment I want to ensure I express that I recognize this isn't the fault of the reviewer. My comment was made in haste and I know this performance was recommended to her. I rather enjoy her reactions and I am simply suggesting that she check out the original studio version first. And through the various incarnations of Yes - i think they all play their role. I enjoyed the original incarnation with Tony and Peter, but I do think "The Yes Album" is one of their best, and I rather like Steve's guitars on it. Sorry, Matt... I thought Pat Moraz did a great job on Relayer. Not sure Rick would have given it that kind of frantic energy it needed on "Gates..." But I do think each serves their contribution the best. I'd like to hear Tony on his originals, and I like to hear Rick on his. And I think Alan White was great for his original compositions. I don't think Billy would have been into Tales or Relayer. And despite others' opinion, I rather like the "Big Generator" version of Yes. I just don't compare the incarnations - much like I don't try to compare Genesis with and without Gabriel. I just appreciate them as they are. But I hope she give Close to the Edge a listen on the studio. I just happen to think this version is woefully inadequate.

Amazing reaction my friend....In 2017, the music world was shocked by the bursting onto the scene of a 22-year-old singer named Dimash Kudaibergen, who performed on the famous Chinese competition show for professional singers called “The Singer”... It was just It was necessary for this young man to make his first appearance, making a cover of one of the most difficult songs in the world, a famous French composition called "S.O.S. D'un Terrien En Détresse", to be considered from that moment on as the best singer in the entire planet....No one in the musical field had ever seen a human being, being able to reach vocal ranges above 7 octaves and several semitones, that is, all 88 keys of a digital piano, which reaches a little more than 7 octaves and as if that weren't enough, sing the more than 12 languages...Since then all kinds of experts (Vocal coach, analysts, singing teachers, youtubers, reactors, etc.) have dedicated themselves to reviewing their presentations to try to understand how someone can sing this way...The incredible thing is that that presentation in China was in 2017 and 5 years have passed since then, but what Dimash has done in these 5 years is to further improve his wide vocal range, which is currently practically above of the 8 octaves... The Covid pandemic stopped his concerts worldwide, all with tickets sold in just seconds, via the internet, but at the same time it ended up catapulting him to the top of popularity worldwide...Anyway, since I think you are one of those reactors who have not yet met this impressive singer, here is the link of that presentation in China in 2017, with the song S.O.S. and I would like you to mention my name as the person who recommended him to you..It is a more recent video than the others, so it does not have the same number of views as the previous ones, which have millions of views, but it is a more complete video, with an intro, subtitles in several languages and with the improved quality of audio and sound....kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHW7ZHmeot6Bl8U

I think several modern reactors like and are attracted to song versions with video. That is the established format now. But little do they know that back in the 60's and 70's it was all about the audio. Video was non-existent or some-what primitive. Maracas: The way YOU pronounced it was almost correct and what we call them, too. It's basically, ma RA cas. Only, in this case, Jon only had one so it was maraca. "That guitar" that you mentioned about 12:00 in is actually an electric sitar. Too bad they never actually showed Steve playing it! On keyboards was Pat Moraz, from either France or Switzerland, I'm not 100% sure which. He's taking over for Rick Wakeman, who was on the album version of this song. By this time, Rick was doing a number of solo albums. Again, had they bothered to show Pat playing for more than 5 seconds, you would've seen that he probably had a dozen keyboards surrounding him. The bass player, Chris Squire, possibly sings slightly lower than Jon. I've never been able to figure it out because they both sing quite high. Sadly, he and the drummer in this video have both died! Alan just died about 2 months ago. Chris died several years ago just after I met him. I would say there's closer to 100,000 in that arena. Now, you wanna see a HUGE crowd, watch the Woodstock movie!! There were nearly half a million people at that concert for 4 days!! Too bad you don't live next door to me! I could fill you in on SO MUCH music and it's history!!

The best eve Live version is ABWH in 1990. Nothing compares. Bills drumming completes the song.

As mixing Chris and Jon’s voices. Check out Turn of the Century, off of the Going For The One album. Perfection.

I really like that your starting to watch Live performances now. I also like that your videos do not skip or break up the song in editing like you have done in the past. Although I do like the band "YES" for me this particular sone was not one of my favorites, I have seen other videos from this same performance of songs I think are much better IMO. Keep being you Verdy.
