Wow! That's an amazing little flier. It reminds me of a cross between the Horton brother's flying wing and the Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet. It's really great to see this fly.

It is well designed concept, with advances (less drag) and drawbacks. With low aspect-ratio wings a nose-high attitude at low speeds is designed. See the Delta dagger and others. I cannot state if there is enough (meaned: safe) vision over the nose to oversee the runway during the final approach.

According 0:59 there is good sight on the runway during approach, but in the final seconds before touch down the nose is high. The pilot can see left and right tough.

Pilots WILL forget to lower their landing gear - but this "Solves" about 66 to 75 percent of THAT problem. (Which Burt Rutan did Pretty Well, with his Quikie -- and That One is reputed to be a bit of a "handful" for a pilot, when it is close to the Ground.)
@robjohnson8522
@robjohnson8522 3 жыл бұрын
"Pilots WILL forget to lower their landing gear" What do you base that on? Millions of pilots have gone entire careers without a gear-up landing. So far I am going on 30 years of flying without forgetting. This one and "no old bold" pilots are the most wrong yet most repeated myths in aviation. {shrug}

@@robjohnson8522 If you do your checks and drills, and perform them always, even 51 flying years without any scrath on the bottom is possible. (my experience). The requirement is the consistency in the checks. Neglect distraction, keep your attention on the integral landing operation.

The designer's last model was a single seater and aesthetically challenged while this one looks like a winner but last I read the designer decided not to distribute plans but is looking for a buyer to build it instead. Sigh!

I always heard that the stealth fighters and B1 bombers with the delta wing configuration were unstable without advanced computerized flight controls. I wonder what the situation is with this little gem?
@ladamyre1
@ladamyre1 3 жыл бұрын
It's not an actual flying wing since it has a rudder, which makes it easy to fly and decidedly NOT stealthy.
@FrancoandMark
@FrancoandMark 2 жыл бұрын
[horizontal] Tailless aircraft are longitudinally stable as long as the aerodynamic center is behind the center of gravity. So you can fly them without computer augmented stability. In the B2's case, the center of gravity sometimes falls slightly behind the aerodynamic center, so it becomes unstable, though this is probably not always the case since the center of gravity various with payload/fuel tensioning/other things. Anyways, fun aircraft design problem.

According to Wikipedia you'd call this a "cropped delta". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delta_wing Delta wings aren't so unconventional, we know another variant of the delta wing aircraft called "hang glider". The chief advantage here seems to be the small folded size that can be stored in a garage! The disadvantage is higher angle-of-attack than a regular wing (this one is raked back significantly to accommodate that) and generally higher drag. So the fuel economy probably isn't all that great, compared to a "normal" aircraft. Good luck fitting a normal aircraft in your garage !!

Aircraft based on the ground effect. The advantage is low in-flight resistance. I assume there is considerable stability when landing in crosswinds.

Владимир Ильин ---- No mate, once you have taken off there is no 'ground effect' . It is an aircraft and it flies due to the the aerodynamic properties of the wing. How high or low it is to the ground has zero to do with . An Airbus A320 does the same. That doesn't do ground effect either.

That's the consequence of a low aspect ratio wing like a delta. For high lift / slow flight, the nose does come up like this. (Lift increases much less with angle of attack for a low aspect ratio wing.) So anything around landing will be at an extremely nose up attitude. Remember the Concorde's foldable nose? Same thing. And, yes, I did see fighters with a nose up attitude like this. Every time they take off or come in for landing.
