VERIFY: North Carolina's strict penalties for speeding drivers

WCNC Charlotte's Nate Morabito recently reported the story of a North Carolina father who had his driver's license suspended after his son was involved in a deadly crash.
The father had given his son his old car, but the son never got the title turned over, or the car insured.
So when the son was involved in a wreck, the father was left on the hook. Jake Twisdale had to pay $20,000 to cover the other driver's injuries and damage to his truck. Eventually, the state suspended Twisdale's driver's license all because he technically still owned his son's car.

While this was a very specific incident, we started looking into the law when it comes to license suspensions in North Carolina and if the Tar Heel State is one of the strictest states in the county.

My mom’s friend drives from NC to Michigan once a year and she got her license suspended for doing 82 in a 70 in VA. That’s absolutely ridiculous. I understand if you’re driving extremely recklessly but that makes me grateful I don’t live in NC (also that was her first ticket in 10+ years)

@@not_moist I’m not. The cop didn’t write her a reckless ticket so she paid the fine. Then next month, she got something in her mail telling her that her license will be suspended for 30 days If you go over 80mph in another state with an NC license, you’ll get your license suspended unless you do traffic school or get the ticket reduced

I get charging him for liability in this instance, but suspending the license of a vehicle owner over the actions of another person driving their vehicle is just dumb. BTW, people love to race down a road near my house in NC, but I never hear sirens chasing after them. Strange that the County Mounties ignore a target rich environment.
