Veritas Honing Guide/Jig Options - Comparison/Review

@BCC: This is the best comparison video of the Veritas honing guides on KZbin. ALL: 0:25-0:50 best advice re sharpening anyone will ever give. REMEMBER that the point to sharpening is to create a SAFE, effective and efficient (in that order) tool. How you get that is YOUR business and no one else's. I started my woodworking/sharpening journey with the Veritas Mk II. Over the past 10 years I've learned two different techniques of free hand sharpening. Like Jamie I still use my Mk II. Why? It is a great system. It delivers precise and accurate results every time. If you are OCD you'll appreciate that. I have CDO. It's like OCD but it is in alphabetical order the way it should be. ... and you thought you had problems!

I have the MK II and I'm very happy. It give me constancy which is very important for me. But my Japanese Chisels I do freehand sharpening, because there I do not add a secondary bevel.

I have the Veritas Mk.II Deluxe Honing Guide set. I’m a newbie when it comes to sharpening however the Mk.II makes it easy and it’s very accurate 🎯. Pricey but I’d highly recommend it 👍

The intro here was epic 😂😂 When i started with wood about 3 years ago i did not have a clue on how to freehand. I went through first the cheapest AliExpress side clamping thing, then a slightly more expensive one still from AliExpress. It worked ok ish, but in the end i went for the Mk 2 deluxe thing. And the mark 2 is fantastic. I have since learned the freehand thing, however feeling for the 50° bevel for my bu planes and then feeling another 0,5° up is still beyond me. Every time i have difficult grain i reach for this Jig.

Haha thank you! I agree with you about steeper angles! I got the free hand down for like 20 to 35 but anything above that... my brain struggles hahahha

My jig arrives today! Can't wait to try it, would love to learn how to freehand but I'm doing this in my (very limited) spare time. Thanks to all the jigs and help from folks like you I can actually turn out decent stuff! Many of us, who do this on the side, do it for fun and for the therapy (my Veritas planes are cheaper than therapy!). Thank yo for sharing!

I fully agree with you there! Woodworking and now youtube are my therapy also!!! No rush on learning free hand, all that matters is your irons are sharp and you can achieve that multiple ways :D

I have the same problem with the top clamp style. I went back to the MKII and got the newer one with the micro-bevel adjustment. Love it. :)

I guess I'm "This Guy". Yes, I know how to hand sharpen but I also use this jig(s) when my chisels get really dull. I always use the jig for my plane irons. I find it's easier to get a good edge but then I'll use the hand method on the strop. I guess I'm all messed up!

@@BatCaveCreations I went ahead and bought the skewed rabbit block plane, do you know if they make a jig for the mark ll to help in sharpening a skewed blade?

They do, I talk about it in this, check the chapters there is a part for skewed irons. In summary tho lol it's I thunj $37.50 and it attaches where the registration jig does :)

Have you used the veritas skew registration jig? If you do a review on that thing, can I suggest showing both left- and right-hand skews? The jig description says it’s good for both, but the fence on it sure looks like it’s primarily intended for one and not the other. But maybe I’m missing something? I dunno: I’ve never held one in my hand.

I have used it and would like to do a video on it even for myself. I use it so infrequently I forget how to use it each time haha I have some scrap chisels I'm going to make into skews so I can make a video (I sold the skews I had and regret it lol )

Agree the MarkII is the superior sharpening jig. Next compare the Veritas side clamping jig to the $stupid Lie Nielsen version.

Haha I did the mk2 to the side clamping. If we did side clamp to ln, ln would win besides price cus it had all the jaws and is more universal but is WAY TOO $$$$ it's insane.

Have you tried the Veritas Short-Blade Honing Guide??? I want to use it for spokeshave blades (veritas even say it works for skew blades)

I use the Mk II and it's hard to keep the blade square with it. I'm always having to go back and make a correction. Still, it works pretty well.

I've had the same problem, sent it back to veritas after a year, they sent a new one which was dead non 90 degrees for a while but went out of wacky again and now the only way to sharpen square is to shim the registration plate with tape. I think the something happens over time with the rollers where they go out of square. Just ordered the side clamping jig in hopes of retiring the mkll

Holy fk! Thi answered all of my questions! Namely, no woodworker should be sharpening other than by hand because I... umm, I mean it, the system is superior. But seriously, I have all three of these loaded into my wish list and couldnt figure out which to go with. The MKII, as you've pointed out, looks super daunting and a demo showing your 10sec set up would help. Otherwise, Im leaning towards the simple tried & true, side clamp. Thx for this video! Lots of great detail and analysis

i've used the old '"sharpening system" for decades, bought it when they first came out, it was called the mk1 and a cambered roller was available which i didn't get unfortunately. it works perfectly but no it wont squareup an out of square iron automatically. a small machinists square does that for me. i have the other specialized jigs for narrow and short irons as well

I first bought the sharpening system but did not like how it worked. It seemed it wasn’t much an improvement over freehand sharpening. I then bought the Mark II and really like it. Very easy to have consistently good results. Also I sharpen an 1/8” chisel with it with no problems. I use the standard Mk II without the narrow blade option. I thought about getting the narrow blade attachment but I have been able to get the chisel to clamp solidly straight in the device and not slip.

Here’s an annoying thing about all of these jigs from Veritas: For their bevel-up family of planes, they offer irons with 25, 38, and 50 degree bevels: NONE of their own jigs offer a setting to hone a 38 degree bevel. It’s honestly a little infuriating.

I get that! I was cracking up when I called customer service about it cus they sell an iron thats 38 deg... All you have to do is go to 35 deg and do a micro bevel so you can get 38 deg. I do wish there was a dedicated stop for it and I still don't understand why there isn't one but a few degrees off of 38 isn't a big deal to me, I don't worry about it needing to be spot on a degree I want

Thats true it doesn't :( I think that depends on the thickness of the iron but I could be wrong lol don't stress on a few degrees off tho it doesn't make that big of a difference imo

I only delete the ones that say "just learn how to free hand" I think the only other one I deleted was when a viewer was being extremely rude to a different viewer.
