In Queenstown, New Zealand, I jumped off the Kawarau Bridge - the site of the first bungy jump. It was a thrilling experience, preceded by a terrifying, gut-wrenching half hour wait. All in all an awesome adventure, even if the woman fitting my harness didn't know the first thing about the acceleration of free-falling bodies.

I still remember my jump from that bridge. When you're actually standing there and looking down, 43m is a lot more frightening than it sounds.

apparently both spellings are acceptable... But a google search reveals a 3:1 preference for "bungee jump" over "bungy jump" but that's how they spelled it in NZ.

Should have tried the Nevis 134m bungee around the corner. 6seconds of free fall! Plenty of time to feel the effects of gravity. And soooo much FUN!! :-)

How do they get the jumper back? Do they just use a machine to pull him up?

Actually the acceleration due to gravity is not 9.8 m/s everywhere...it changes we must use the formula of time period of pendulum to calculate it i.e.,T=2π√l/g.
@penderyn5816

I don't quite get this, kinda makes me feel stupid. Isn't Newtons first law: [..]" an object either remains at rest or continues to move at constant velocity, unless acted upon by a force." So why is he accelerating? There is the Gravitational-Pull draging him down, but shouldn'd there be a equal force in an equal magnitude but opposite direction? So i thought Gravitation was a balanced force. Or does this only apply when he is on the ground, since he has a higher potential energy when beeing high up, which leads to his acceleration?
@EebstertheGreat
@EebstertheGreat 7 жыл бұрын
Newton's third law states that for every "action" (force) there is an equal (in magnitude) and opposite (in direction) "reaction" (force). In this case, the force that the Earth exerts on Derek is equal in magnitude and opposite in direction to the force that Derek exerts on the Earth. I'll say that again: Derek pulls the Earth up just as hard as the Earth pulls Derek down. Of course, the Earth is far more massive than Derek, so it hardly accelerates at all due to this force, whereas he accelerates quite a lot. Newton's third law certainly does _not_ state that the accelerations must be equal.

@phoenixdar If the bungie chord is tied to your feet when it starts to pull you back up you will whip around really fast from your head being up to being down and I imagine it would not be fun

I dunno how expensive it is nor if it's actually a service you can just schedule and go or if you need to custom order everything; but i once saw this bungee jump using a huge length of bungee rope from a hot air balloon; i think doing it like that you might have enough time to think about your acceleration and stuff on your way down.

What was the blood pressure in your head when you've reached the bottom? What scares me the most about bungee jumping is that all my blood vessels in my head would just burst from the pressure! :D

@cristian silver i haven't done it myself but i think you would. well kind of. first of all you feel acceleration. you actually have an accelerometer in your inner ear. the force from the ground and the force from gravity normal nets zero acceleration but when in free fall you would feel the acceleration. you would not however feel your weight in normal terms. normally you feel your weight from the pressure it puts on your feet or butt depending on how you are resting. however when in free fall there is no part holding your body up.

Ok, now our turn to poke fun at you :) ... The adrenaline has obviously affected your physics-skills. At 2:24 you are saying that you experienced a "very great increase in your rate of speed" or in other words an increase in your acceleration. I am sure some kind of spacetime anomaly changed the earth's gravity just for you :-P
