I think people with the talent and integrity of Verlon are far and few between. He, imo, should be celebrated while he is still healthy and performing.

As much as I love Guy Clark this man does not have to be anybody’s sidekick unless by choice. What a great poet with the musical talent to make it work great.

Saw Verlon with the great Mr. Guy Clark and Tom Russell (another great story teller) here on Vancouver Island in 2001 and you know what ?..... it's stuck with me after all these years. Glad to see that he's such a great performer in his own right. One the best performers that many of us have never heard of.

Waylon Holyfield, Harlan Howard. I was surprised to hear Hickory Holler Mall. The only other time I’d ever heard of Hickory Holler was from a record my parents had, and passed down to me, called Hickory Holler’s Tramp, by O C Smith. I knew every song on that album since I was a child in the sixties. Had no idea there was an actual place by that name. I haven’t found a KZbin bio of Verlon Thompson. Wish someone would create one, about his childhood, learning to play guitar, getting into playing professionally, all the details about his life. It would be great if he wrote an autobiography audiobook. Lots of singers, like Brandi Carlile, have written their autobiography, using their songs to add to the story of their lives. With an audiobook, there is no cost of printing. Verlon, I believe, played a big role in Guy Clark’s life.

Something I’ve noticed about being a KZbin follower is that the things I need to see (irrespective of some of the crap I don’t) eventually come to me. That was the case with this man. I’m a one-time singer/ songwriter who put his guitar down a couple decades ago after loosing part of one finger on my left hand. I’ve always had it in the back of my mind to pick it up again but lacked motivation and inspiration to get past my debilitation. I mentioned this to a music store owner one day - thinking he would concur that I didn’t have what it took - but to my surprise he disagreed and rhymed off a list of great guitarists without use of all their digits. I changed my thinking but the thought of learning to play all over again with uncallused fingers kept me from seriously pulling that old Martin out of storage. Then one day, talking to a lady who runs a small nondenominational church, I mentioned anecdotally that I used to play guitar. Turns out her church was in desperate need of a musical accompaniest and she took my admission to mean I was it. I hated to turn her down and I was admittedly a bit intrigued by the idea. After getting my fingers back in shape and initially sounding terrible, I learned how to reconfigure some of the chords and now I learn 3 songs to play at the weekly service and it’s starting to feel pretty good. I thought about writing again but hit the brick wall of thinking I don’t have what it takes. Along come songwriters on KZbin, chief among them Vernon, who just do it as their way of relating to and giving something to the greater world around them and it’s just in them to do and they don’t question their ability to get it right even if they go through their share of rewrites. I have decided to spend the winter putting an album together.

Wow! Buddy you got my heart. I did the '90s in Nashville and they wanted to put a pair of jeans on my ass from dangerous threads. The record label was Nova. Got an offer from Liberty at the time if I could find $250,000 worth of backers. You're killing me man. Would love to meet you someday and exchange songs. I was number one two three on Independent charts after I split Nashville. The stage name is Brad Lee. All the best!
