Help me Tom. I originally put five bins that were almost completed into my maxi when I got it. I actually took out most of the worms from the first bin I put in and put the almost finished castings first. Then added the worms and the other four bins. Since the bottom stuff was almost finished I tried a small harvest after a month. To my frustration it was very wet with worms. Not so many worms but wetter than when it went in. After two months I decided to try another harvest and it was even wetter with over a thousand worms and many wisps and eggs. I use dry shredded cardboard and use squeezed blended food to feed. I have opened the lid on numerous occasions and stopped feeding for a while to see if it would get dryer after the first harvest. I have now placed a fan in front of the bag to see if that will help. Any ideas? Since the bags breath I never expected to get out mud and so many worms. Did I start with too much in the beginning. It only filled about half way.

Well it has to be that there is too much moisture going into the system. Even though the VermiBags can handle a lot of moisture...there is always a point where it is too much. The worms are probably down there because they like it wet... as long as there is oxygen and the Vermibag provides plenty if that. You may try not blending your food. In that way the moisture would release slowly vs all at once when it’s blended. I’d also add additional shedded cardboard when you feed to absorb the additional moisture. Bottom line is you need to cut back on the moisture some how. Let me know how it goes .. Also now that there are worms down low.. it may take a harvest or two to get them out of that area.

Part of it may also be due to the fact to put so much “almost finished “ castings into the system to start. After I Think about it...if you have a container of loose finished castings and you put a little water in it .....it will turn into a soupy mess. If you have a container with compact compost and do the same thing...it would slowly soak in. I think the problem was the huge layer if loose finished compost... it acted like a sponge. Im not sure about the best way of fixing it Ill have to think about it. But for sure. Run the bag in the dryer side fir a while.

VermiBag Composting Systems I was thinking of using whole food scraps or dry food for a while. Perhaps the fan blowing on the outside will help also. The room itself is also a bit damp due to all the worm bins and growing my starts for the summer. I’m sure I’ll figure it out. There was no moisture leakage so it wasn’t that wet just heavily moist. I just put a bunch of dry shredded cardboard so we’ll see what happens in a week or so. The top and center is ok, it’s seems to just be that lower section. I’ll just have to figure out the perfect amount of everything. I’m used to using one inch squares and went back to shredded cardboard to make some moist bedding like you make only mine is on the dryer side. When I feed I only used totally dry bedding.
