By far the most comprehensive presentation on vermiculture I've seen to date without the razzle dazzle of trying to sell you on a particular product or methodology. Appreciated the in depth study summaries and dispelling some misinformation that I thought were fact. Exceptional.

Very informative video. Thank you. I think there is important information missing regarding the possibility of composting citrus before feeding to the worms. I feed my worms precomposted scraps that include citrus, onions and other "no-no" materials and the worms readily eat it without issues.
@LK-30003 жыл бұрын
I've seen others that do so also. However, if red mites are attracted to your bin, they will prey on your worms. They're not like the white mites. As long as you're keeping watch for that, it should be fine.
@jordanhuguenard83153 жыл бұрын
I normally compost first, and then wait until it's a couple stages before compost, I'll feed it to my worms, it is much easier for the worms to consume broken down and already rotten materials, rather than giving them fresh materials, I'm not saying fresh material is bad but not in large quantities, my worms diet is composted leaves and some grass, and they absolutely love it and reproduce rapidly with that diet, worms love mostly carbon material

You seem to have ignored and/or discounted the "P and K" values when showing the turnips. The P and K values could/would account for the differences in size of the root more so than the nitrogen, the "N" in NPK, which would feed the leaf, rather than the root. Is that not so?

Great video. I use a worm factory 360. Im on my third tray right now. The bottom tray was getting compact so I was told by someone, not sure who but that I should sort of gently till the bottom tray to keep oxygen in it... thoughts?

can you take the vegies and blend them up and them mix that up in the dirt, so they can eat better?
@Green.Country.Agroforestry4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can. Keep in mind that blending food waste increases the surface area, and speeds microbial decomposition, so you would want to feed less, so the worms get the food, rather than having it go through a normal composting process.

21:40 I thought the difference b/w castings and vermicomposting is that vermicomposting is specifically compost that you run worms through after the thermophilic process?

If my vermicompost dries out after i have removed all my worm family. Does that kill the microrganisms. I am saving for Spring plantings.
@skymagruder52703 жыл бұрын
The castings can be dried out and be re-hydrated, works best in a compost tea.

A lot of microorganisms will”hibernate” when dry and. One back to life when moistened again and worm eggs will also hatch.

I moved into this home about 40 years ago and when I did some gardeing; I came across several large worms that were as thick as a nightcrawler; but only about 4 inches long. When I picked one up; it began flipping back and forth until it actually broke into two halves. Both halves wiggled back into the soil. The next two worms did the same thing. I pretty much got used to seeing these, along with Nightcrawlers and smaller Red worms. Last year I started a compost with large amounts of grass clippings and leaves. A week or so later I was turning the compost pile and was surprised to see these same worms had moved into the wetter end of this pile and there were several hundreds feeding on my compost. They too , seemed to hurry to get out of the sunlight. This Spring, I plan on relocating this pile to my garden, after these worms return. Any ideas on what this is?

What other things can be used for bedding? Can I use grass and leaves that have dried up in the yard? Of course, I will moisten them before putting them in.
@jasonharrold66865 жыл бұрын
grass may heat up your bin and kill your worms, leaves I guess would be the next best thing. a lot of people use cardboard. some people use coconut coir and I think peat moss
@goldenages70895 жыл бұрын
Yes you can use grass clippings if they are completely dried out they won't heat up.

How eliminate salt and amonia in the hug poo for vermicomposting ? Thx
@jcraulstonarb2 жыл бұрын
Animal waste should be aged for 6mo-1yr before adding to vermicompost. Ammonia will convert to other forms of N and pathogens in the poo will die out. Salt is controlled by diluting the animal waste by mixing it with lots of plant waste.

Yeah too bad worms these days cost so much it's actually more expensive to vermicompost and actually just compost with red wigglers costing anywhere between $50 to $79 for 1 pound of worms
@jcraulstonarb7 ай бұрын
That's a frightfully expensive bag of worms! It may not hurt to trust to the mantra "If you build it, they will come" as you begin your worm composting adventures. If they don't come, hey, at least you have some compost!

Yeah but then u gotta worry about Alabama jumpers getting into it which there bodies do not give nutrients like red wigglers and Indian blues

Hi Rhonda, I have to ask, Why havent you replied to any comments I have seen hear. Let me explain I have been composting for 40 years. and supplying worms mainly for fishing. Mainly Brandling worms. I probably know more about composting and raising worms than many. the end result is the worm poo as you call it, from the compost that has been made and has lost most of the heat. I will say one thing, the only winner are the ones who are selling the idea to the public who believes in you and parting with lots of money. Danny.

So... as a scientist, it didn't occur to you to test what "worm tea" actually is? I suspect it's more like worm pee. Thumbs up anyway! :)
@TheBacontarian4 жыл бұрын
Worm tea is actually something else. It's when you take the worm castings in a mesh bag put it in a bucket of water with a bubbler like from a fish tank and brew a liquid compost/fertilizer. She was talking about leachate

Fruit flies like the same types of food as the worms. There are management techniques to reduce fruit flies. Too many to list in this comment. Google 'fruit flies in vermicompost' to learn more about how to control them.
