@01:16 -- I think the missing ingredient that you forgot to mention was either phosphorus or perhaps uranium :D To play it safe... just in case you got an overdose of gamma radiation, make sure you don't let yourself get angry _(I don't think people would like you when you're angry after a major O.D. of gamma radiation - remember how it went for Bruce Banner... haha!)_ Looks like a nice mix of stuff in that chow. I think the worms will *really* enjoy eating it 👍🏻 That worm party you found under the _'Yeti'_ pine nut & almond flour goop mounds was cool... very cool! Great advice on being able to put pretty much anything, in moderation, into a worm bin for composting. It's so true :)
@Vermicompost2 жыл бұрын
🤣😂🤣🤢Don't make me angry...you won't like me when I'm angry!!! My mom used to say that to us periodically as she was trying to raise the 5 of us!! When I was cleaning out the pantry I felt like I was gonna find some uranium or phosphorus back there!! I'm sure the worms would have eaten it in the right quantities... I really didn't expect to find too many worms under the yeti but they definitely found something they liked in aged moldy pine nuts! Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and throw back to one of my favorite shows growing up with Lou Ferrigno!!

Fascinating time laspe!! Definitely seemed like on day 3.5 more worms were on the side of the bin than any other "day". Kinda makes sense it would probably be the warmest in the middle of the feeding zone and there may be a correlation of off gassing from it ??? I noticed in my lazy compost trial, that day 3-4 was the warmest, then temp started dropping, probably unrelated but still interesting. Only the 3rd feeding is crazy brother !! Trademark that chow brother!! Hey could you mix some eggs and pune nuts ??? Let's go guys !! Have a great Latour Day weekend!! Cheers J&C 🌱🪱🌱
@Vermicompost2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! You are probably right about day 3.5, I imagine there was more condensation on the sides on that day although the castings never felt too much warmer than room temperature on any day. Egg shells may work well with the pine nuts as a declumping agent. Right now the extra pine nuts are in the freezer after seeing how much mold they grew!! Love your insights brother, keep them coming!! Thanks so much for the insta-click & for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

Hiya Patrick..was nice to see the worm chow experiment. I tot the coconut flour would go last becos of the oil it contains. But these worm are tough. I tried cashewnut powder n it worked too. There's nothing the worms won't eat. Today yr bin has a heavy feeding with a variety. I m sure they'll enjoy it. Gd luck wormies.

Pretty cool stuff, I love seeing time lapse videos. One thing I wanted to warn you off of was the colored cardboard shreds. I think that glossy colored paint has heavy metals in it unlike the soy ink on the newspaper. But maybe that's changed! I'm sure either way it's not too big a deal, I never know how much to worry about stuff like that. Keep up the good work and build the channel!
@Vermicompost2 жыл бұрын
Thank you!! This one was a pretty unique one for me as the moldy yeti looking pine nut substance grew over the first 5 days, then died back some as the worms started eating it! I think the glossy colored ink has also been switched to soy based inputs since the 1970's from what I could find on the internet and the glossiness is made from clay...but like you said it is hard to know how much to worry about stuff like that. I do know the worms take a lot longer to consume it so I limit it's use in general and usually send our cereal and other glossy boxes off to recycling. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch & pass on the ink info!!🪱🪱🪱

Yeah! Coconut flour 👍. I have a oodles of it. Have you tried rice flour or chick pea flour? Or how does any old wheat based flour do? I know I have some expired regular wheat flour lurking in the deep forgotten corners of my pantry. Thanks for doing this experiment!
@Vermicompost2 жыл бұрын
I was so surprised at the difference between the almond flour and coconut flour!! Who knew??!?? I haven't tried rice flour or chick pea flour but I have tried chick peas and they ate them up no problem!! I think wheat flour will be a great base to any worm chow as long as it is spread out pretty thin in the bin...I've seen some clumping that lasts in the bin for a couple feedings when I've used super fine flour. I think having different sized particles in the worm chow helps it. Thanks so much for stopping by to watch & thanks for all your support!!🪱🪱🪱

Seems like maybe the pine nuts could add a "slow" food component to the chow, given how many worms you found underneath 'em. Incredible how quickly the worms ate up the lentils
@Vermicompost2 жыл бұрын
That is a great perspective on the pine nuts, I didn’t even think of that! I was super surprised how quickly the lentils went, I thought both “flours” would be gone way before them! I get that these additives are what worms love, but is the extra expense and trouble worth minor boost in output, vs something that might be slower, but less work and cost per?
@Vermicompost9 ай бұрын
You are spot on! I am a frugal lazy worm farmer so I try not to buy anything for my worms (other than the bins themselves). All these additives were from expired items in our pantry so I didn’t purchase them specifically for the worms…it makes me feel a little better that I’m not throwing them out😂. I totally agree with you, I’m not sure buying additional additives for my worm bins is worth the results I might or might not see in my garden. If I was a commercial grower or more serious gardener then something like azomite or other additives might be worth it. Great question! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

Can you use colored newspaper
@Vermicompost2 жыл бұрын
Yes, from what I've been able to research commercial inks were switched to soy based inks in the 1970's so I don't think there are any issues there. Additionally earthworms are use in some bio remediation operations to "clean" soils of toxic chemicals, so I'm not sure if it applies to any ink situation but it gives me confidence enough to not think twice about using any newspaper, cardboard or regular paper with colored ink on it. Hope this helps!! Thanks so much for stopping by to watch & ask a great question!!🪱🪱🪱

I have done a couple Yeast experiments one was with breeder buckets, just 3 of them for 6 months and there was not a noticeable difference. I also ran a worm bin for 9 months changing the bedding every 90 days (harvesting) and the result was an overabundance of springtails. The bin that I ran for 90 days at a time, the Yeast was in the worm chow which was fed daily as the main source of food. Food scraps and used coffee grounds were only used at the setup of the bin. I am not entirely sure if the Yeast was a cause of the overabundance of springtails, but I will say this, I ran other bins the same minus the Yeast and they did not have a crazy amount of springtails. Once I stopped using the Yeast the springtail population decreased and went back to normal. Give it a try and see what happens. Have a wonderful Day!
