It’s weird-it seems like a lot of actors tend to be almost exact opposites of their common roles. It’s not really consistent enough to even be a rule of thumb, but still. It seems like a *lot* of horrible characters are played by nice people, while some nice or virtuous characters are played by terrible people. I’ve read lots of comments talking about the guy who plays Biff Tannen in Back to the Future (sorry, I don’t have his name memorized, and I hate doing searches-also I detest Google as a company) apparently being a super kind and gentle person, and most of us know how awful the Tannen bloodline is. On the flip side, Chris Evans is pretty much the polar opposite of Steve Rogers/Captain America. Apparently Jim Carrey is also a notorious asshole, yet he often plays really good guys. Ditto for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, unfortunately. (I say “unfortunately” because up until recently, The Rock was one of few celebrities I still had a fair bit of respect for; I grew disillusioned with Carrey and Evans several years ago for various reasons, though I still respect Carrey as an artist. Chris Evans never really meant anything to me before I learned how much of a prick he is, so I lost nothing there. Only thing that makes me sore about him is that he’s a total slap in the face to Captain America-and I’m not talking about his acting.) Obviously these are just a few examples, but there are a ton more of these bizarre contrasts out there, and it is interesting how often things work out this way.

I know everybody has an issue with Willie’s character in this movie,, but you have to remember the source material that Indiana Jones is based on. His character is based on the 1940s serialized action adventures that you would get at the movie theaters. She would be a typical damsel and distressed character from that time and actually more accurate to the overall tone of this Indiana Jones series. Marion is a fantastic character in the first movie, but she is definitely more of a modern day woman.

Thanks, Verowak! 🧭 I love the opening musical number so much. Yes, 'Willie' is a damsel in distress trope (as most female characters in the 1930s were depicted)... and very irritating. But otherwise, I think it's an enjoyable ride. And I don't think it's a spoiler to let you know that it was pure lust between them, not love. You won't have to worry about seeing her again.
@TedLittle-yp7ujАй бұрын
There were many, many strong female characters in 1930's films (c.f. Better Davis, Katherine Hepburn, Paulette Goddard, Barbara Stanwyck, etc., etc., etc.) Even in the serials, which the Indiana Jones films were based on, the female characters, though often in peril, were seldom week characters and often rescued the hero.
@auntvesuvi3872Ай бұрын

My personal ranking: Temple Last Crusade Raiders That said, it's a very tight race all around. I can see the argument of this being the weakest of the three. The character of Willie is extremely easy to dislike, yes. I agree the romantic subplot does feel forced though that is usually my least liked thing of any movie. So I'm kinda accustomed to dealing with that. Still, there's a good handful of reasons why this is my favorite of the trilogy: with my childhood being filled with musicals like this Sound of Music, Wizard of Oz and Rocky Horror Picture Show, that opening number is a ton of fun; the dinner banquet scene speaks to my taste of an exotic diet very easily; the mine cart chase is a fantastic set piece; and I don't think I've ever seen a hero/sidekick relationship bridge an age gap quite like Indy and Short Round.
@benschultz1784Ай бұрын
This was filmed in Sri Lanka as the Indian government wasn't too happy with the portrayal of Hinduism. An important scene that got cut for time had Indy run into Captain Blumbertt while getting the fruit platter for Willie, where Indy tells him something's off about Pankot because no one should have eaten anything from that feast. It also sets up Blumbertt returning with his Punjab Rifles later.

Believe or not, Muppet Babies used almost an entire episode adapting/parodying this, what is the darkest, most violent of the Indiana Jones films. While not the best Indy film, this remains my favorite. Partly because of all the jungle and dungeon adventure elements, but, I have to admit, probably has a lot to do with Muppet Babies, ha. Willie can be annoying- but it was at least partially intentional, as they wanted to distinguish the film further from Raiders by having the total opposite of Karen Allen's Marion. And she represents one of the archetypes from the old serial films that the Indy series takes inspiration from, for better or for worse. Also, if it's not mentioned elsewhere- the night club at the start is called Club Obi-Wan as an Easter egg, and the man helping Indy to the plane is an uncredited cameo by Dan Aykroyd.

A lot of people hate on Willie, but I think it's refreshing to see a female lead who isn't a strong-female-badass-bitch character, which is practically EVERY female lead character in the past three decades. Also, Indiana Jones is fantasy. That's why the situational aspects of the movie are so unbelievable and why certain scenes are laughable and you get the religious mysticism in every movie. It's meant to be taken as not real, as part of the fun experience.

1. Some folks don't care for this one very much, but I do. It's all kinds of fun. 2. Just small suspensions of belief regarding the lifeboat drop out of the plane, and the coal car landing perfectly on the tracks.🙄🙄 3. IRL Ford could fly that plane. 4. When I was in the US Navy I got to eat monkey (but not monkey brains) and tasted dog in the Philippines. 5 Shortround is "Billy Badass"🤬😎 6. Disneyland already has a "Raiders of the lost ark" so another one of the ride through the tunnel/mine would be cool too. Assuming you can afford it.😏 7. Kate Capshaw got the Willie gig because she was dating and later became Spielberg's wife. 8. Fun act: The guy that plays the guy getting crushed is the same actor that played the guy that goy hit with the propellor in "Raiders of the lost ark". 9. Coolest villain ever.👺 10. Recently one of his fedoras sold at auction for $600.000🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑

Capshaw wasn't dating Spielberg here, he got back with Amy Irving a year after this. They got married in 1991. But the spark was clearly from here...

Have fun with this one. By the way, this is the one where Mr. Spielberg found his future wife to be 👰.

The love interest going from Marion in Raiders to Willie in this one was such a letdown.

Marion was no help to Indy whatsoever

Which screaming character did you most want to mute/muffle/throw into a bottomless pit? a. Willie Scott in "Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom" (1984) b. Vicki Vale in "Batman" (1989) c. Ruby Rhod in "The Fifth Element" (1997) d. Mary Jane Watson in "Spider-Man" (2002) e. Bobcat Goldthwait in "any of his films" 😁😁😁

To be fair, as much of this is a Steven Spielberg film, it is a dule right along with Gorge Lucas

Funny thing I only recently realized, Wuhan is a city in China, so Indy teamed up with someone else named after a place 😁

This one came out when I was probably five years old, which is right about the time I was the age that I still have significant memories of. I might've even seen this in the theater, but I'm not quite certain of that, but this is the one that does stick out as significant to my childhood. Though now, despite the nostalgia, it is my least favorite of the original trilogy, and maybe all of them. The third one, The Last Crusade, has really been my favorite since I first saw it in the theaters. No spoilers as to why, but I'm looking forward to you seeing it!
