My first big concert was OC and Big L in Zurich, Switzerland. After the concert we were lucky enough to meet them behind the building as they were leaving, and Big L was super nice. In addition to the pictures he had also recorded a skit for the mix tape of a friend of ours who was at home and was a DJ. The first mix tape he made, at 17, has a Big L skit in it... Not bad...

Lyrically Big L is one of the best. But sadly he was too much in the streets and caught up in street nonsense with his brother that stalled his career and lost his life. Even the reason behind his shootting was allegedly just a retaliation from someone he robbed. Since then I figured Big L was telling the truth in his lyrics how he's "quick to twist your cap back for a fat stack". This Ma$e story confirms what i already thought. RIP BIG L. one of the best to do it. 🙏 🕊

Bro real hip hop heads know how deadly mase was lyrically and a flow to match that no one had heard of at the time. Smooth flow with mad punch lines. Most know him for his joints with Total (who btw have just disappeared. Need them back!) but murda mase was killing it. In my opinion he was clear of most rappers at the time and prob stil to this day. Loon was my other fave artist who sounded very similar but had his own unique style. Niggaz think coz L do that “wiggity wiggity” flow he was some generational rapper when actually alot of rappers were doing that even jay z started his flow that way til he learnt to harness it and spit properly. Big up Mase. Hes a real one

Word. Mase has always been super nice. That whole era with the double time, iggedy wiggity flow was originally Das EFX then Fu Shnickens and everyone else took it, including L. While L was cool with it, Mase and Cam were definitely better writers, lyricists and spitters with a more polished flow.

Yeah, that's exactly what I thought as well. Always had the impression that Big L grew up in the streets, but wasn't actually out there getting caught up and instead used rap to vicariously describe the experience. To me, there was always this undertone that Big L was simply playing an exaggerated character, but was actually a pretty chill guy in real life. It's disappointing to learn that he really was a rather grimy individual. And it's not just this interview; recent revelations in general (like that NFL crew documentary) also corroborate that Big L was just a shady person.

I got injured at The Tunnel on New Year's Eve in the 90s. Shots went off outside while waiting in line. We all scrambled and fell on each other. I limped for a month.
