When it comes to clean amp pedal platforms, finding something with "Boutique" tone on a budget can leave most of us frustrated and left with few quality choices. However, there's one sleeper amp that released several years ago which has the tone and quality of a $2,000+ boutique amp at a fraction of the price. This amp has really flown under the radar, and can be had quite inexpensively, especially second hand, with many boutique upgrades like Celestion Speakers, Mercury Magnetics transformers, and two selectable clean channels. This is one of the greatest, and most affordable, clean amp pedal platforms ever made, yet nobody knows about it! Today we hope to change that and shed some light on this amazing amplifier!

Hey Mason, I got mine a few years ago from an old man, that hadn't the time to maintain the amp. Also he told me, that it was to heavy for him. He just wanted to get rid of it ASAP, so he sold me the ML for 350€...! I was shocked and happy at the same time, that I got it so cheap. From then on I recorded 2 Albums with my band, played it on stage countless times. (yes there was a time before COVID, hopefully we will all recover very soon) I used it in many different music styles and projects. This was the best demo by far. Thanks again Mason and keep it up! Much love from Germany!

It was good timing seeing this..I bought one sight unseen days after and super impressed with the circuit format/boutique tone, footprint and although the weight is definitely there (60lbs)..it's manageable because it's compact for a 2x12. I've gone down the boutique rabbit hole with my Carr, Dr Z and most recently my 65 amps Stone Pony combo and after much contemplation sold it. Thanks for showcasing some nice chord voicings/tones. The ML is all you'll ever need and indeed a sleeper and "keeper" amp.

Hey Mason! After watching this video I started poking around out of curiosity and found one of these nearby for $800 in like new condition. I have to say, I agree with most all of the details you pointed out here. I've been through a few different amps trying to find something that agrees with pedals for at home enjoyment, and this thing definitely fits the bill. Thanks for your dedication to your craft. It helped me make a great purchase that I'm happy with.

I’m a working musician, been playing guitar 46 years, I own 2 of these Fender ML hot rod devilles. They’re excellent amps. I bought one, used it for a year and then concluded that it was such a great amp, that I decided to get a second one. I have a few boutique amps too but those have sat mostly unused cause these ML devilles sound so good. They provide what I consider the perfect amount of clean headroom for both small and large venues. And these amps do take pedals really REALLY well so you can get great overdrive/distorted tones too with pedals. The volume knobs have a smooth taper, meaning there’s no jump up in volume which has been a complaint sometimes with other amps. Anyway I highly recommend these amps.

Mason, it makes my day when you put out a video or podcast. I've listened to your podcasts with Tony Lowe three times! I've been all digital for years - Helix and Quad Cortex. But I recently put together a hybrid analog/digital pedalboard into a Hot Rod Deluxe that I heavily modified. All these options are just fantastic in their own way and its really fun to try different things. I've learned a tremendous amount from your content and applied to both the analog and digital world. Thanks for what you do.

Finally! Some love for this amp. It was my first real amp, bought it brand new and abused it through years of gigging. and it held up to the abuse till this day. Its such a great pedal platform, effects really shine through on it, many gig friendly features, and sounds gorgeous on keys too. Yet on gigs people would often come to me asking how my hot rod sounded so different and I’d have to explain it was Landau’s signature amp and nobody ever knew what it was. Glad its getting some well deserved recognition:)

Outstanding video Mason! Thank you for featuring this amazing amp. 100% consistent with my experience w/ the HRD ML. I exhaustively vetted clean pedal platform amps for a super important gig before purchasing mine in 2017. Like you, I've been a bit incredulous that this amp wasn't more popular. I've used mine on live gigs, TV, video shoots, recording, etc., using full featured boards, smaller builds and just to test out pedals - all with exceptional results. It always delivers, no matter what I put in front of it. I recently ran < Timmy< Archer < CE2< Dispatch Master for a quick session with absolutely glorious results. While it's not my main amp for recording or gigging right now, it's such a killer amp to have in the arsenal. Even the upgraded handle is extra badass. Loved the tones you were getting Mason! That JM tone was killing:) Cheers!

Hi. First of all, I appreciate and respect what you are saying and am grateful for your ongoing videos. I have to chime in though. I have owned several hot rod deluxe amp as well as the Deville. They sound good and as you likely are aware of, they are the most popular and most used amps in history. However, the rub with me are two things. The weight of them is backbreaking and the volume is pretty much useless. It's loud, louder and loudest. There is not way to enjoy this amp unless you are playing in a large insulated space. Connecting pedals to it is great if you have a very large space such as a club to play it in. I am sure that many of you may disagree however, it would benefit Fender to get out of their own way with respect to keeping things vintage. I get that part but, this amp would sell 100 x more if they offered a built-in attenuator such as 5 or 10 watt option built-in switch in addition to 25 and more. I own to amps right now, the first is my Mesa Boogie TC (Triple Crown). It is by far not only the best sounding but more versatile amp that I have ever played. The combo does not have a built-in attenuator but the 100 Watt head does, however, I can mitigate the output by playing with the master along with a volume switch. Other than my Boss DD-200 delay pedal, there is not need for a boost, a distortion or any other pedal. The clean channel is prestine and even has multiple options to revise the tone. Channel 2 is my blues channel and with all the options that you want. Channel 3 offers as much gain as anything that you could want. No need to purchase a single or dual rectifier because it does it all. Unfortunately, in my current living space, I do not play my TC-50 as often as I like however, my Fender Bassbreaker 15 does so much. I can tone the volume down quite a bit because it has three gain options. I have no idea why this amp does not sell off the shelves 24 hours a day. I once added a Mesa Boogie Throttle box with the EQ and shockingly, it sounded very close to my Boogie. Well, I hope you can also appreciate my feedback and thank you for reading my comments.

Bassbreaker line don’t sell well cuz guitarrist buy hype, vintage, boutique and so on hype, I have 3 bassbreaker along with my vibtage and boutique and own amp builds and the BB15 is a thing of beauty, it even have a filter choke and those 3 stages and plywood cab with effect loops and multitap and so on features and is quiet, none manufacturers do such things for this price, if maybe fender put a different image and name to that line definitely will be selling like pancakes

Thanks for sharing this incredible sounding amp...sounds much different than the regular hot rod Devilles' I have tried out!! I am a Marshall/Bassman devotee for distortion/overdrive (I have many early 70's modded metal panel MarshallJMPs' and a '66 Bassman head that sounds just like AC/DC's rhythm guitars...I put an incredible sounding Peerless/Altec Lansing output transformer in it) though other flavors of great tube overdrive exist in many other amps.

Only thing I don't like is the "more drive" feature but honestly I dont use it at all, it takes so well pedals that isnt neccesary. The reverb is huge too, past 3 gets really messy. I've own a standard Hot Rod Deville for about 7 years, and I have played a friend's ML model live at a concert as well. The ML model sounds significantly better, my guess is mostly due to the better quality speaker. You are right, this is a killer amp, even if you don't factor in the price - but once you do, it's a no brainer. Glad to see someone is drawing attention to it. My only beef with these amps is that the 2x12 combo format is super heavy - which is really the only reason why I'd ever think of buying a different model. Also, the video presentation here is bonkers - the lighting, settings, colors and camera work are superb!

I remember looking at these a couple years ago but I never did try one. Peavey Classic 30 is another great one - a fairly popular amp, but lower wattage and certainly a great pedal platform. It is one of the few affordable amps that can achieve that Mayer-ish fuzzy overdrive sound that is so elusive. I added a Steel String Supreme and a few other pedals and it sounds really great clean or dirty, but even stock with no pedals, if you get a classic 30 dialed in, it sounds really full-bodied and good.

I've been on the hunt for THAT pedal platform amp that isn't going to break the bank...I have some great combos already, including some heads that are just KILLAH ... but don't have a Fender.... and ironically my first amp was a vintage late 60s silver face Fender Twin Reverb.... man, was that thing loud and heavy! 😎🤘🎸🐦

Sounds good, and great playing. Would be nice to hear a bit higher gain drive or distortion pedals played through this. These were pretty low amounts of drive showcased here, even a Blues Driver type circuit with the drive turned up or a plexi type pedal to hear how it handles riffs.

I got one of these when it first came out and really wasn’t too impressed because it is so loud when turned up to get some amp overdrive. However, I bought a Tone King Ironman II and put it in the ML. Now it is easily in the top 3 of my favorite amps to play. Great amp!

I feel like those trying to get drive out of this are using it not as it was intended. I think the intent was to be clean for pedals, so getting drive out of it requires too much volume for most situations. I can see where an attenuator would be needed if you wanted to get some amp gain.

I’ve recently swapped out the 12AX7 tube for a 12AT7 in the first position of my HotRod Deluxe IV’s preamp and it really restructured the sound in a pleasing way. It took some of the huge volume out of the Clean channel without affecting the headroom much. But now you can run the amp at around 4 instead of 2 without pealing the paint off the walls and thus the tone feels warmer, a little more broken in. It takes pedal really well still and just opens up gloriously with a bit of boost and overdrive. And most excitingly, the gain channel becomes usable. It’s got character now and when you add your OD pedals it goes interesting new places that don’t automatically chase you back to the clean channel. That one $16 fix has really expanded the amp for me and I’m stoked. Now, a new speaker?…. The Tone Journey never ends.

I had one of these till 2018! What a great amp! Sold it as I got my Dirty Shirley! But I miss it, it sounds so good with overdrive and fuzz pedals! Due to the V-Type speakers as well a bit more Brit stylish. Room filling sound, it’s spreads over the whole rehearsal room! Regret I sold it! It is really boutique sound for about 1000 bucks! I do not know what a boutique priced amp would sound better! As well very touch sensitive! I bought mine for 750,- Euros lightly used! Every time somebody in the Pedalboard Facebook group ask for a recommendation for a pedal platform amp I recommend this beast! Good job Mason on your Vid.

Hi from New Zealand. Indeed this amp is something special. Don`t have one myself, although I`ve been on the outlook. They are very special amps, and a huge upgrade from the regular hot rod series no doubt! You can definitely find more, if you’re patient and wait around you can get some good deals, and frankly even sometimes I found new ones at Guitar Center or ones that were demo stock or B stock versions. It’s definitely fighting way above its weight class, and even at $1500 or $2000 it would seem like a pretty fair deal comparatively to its competing amplifiers in the boutique realm.

I have run several pedals through it and that thing is a MONSTER. I ran it through my Mesa Boogie 2x12 vertical halfback and couldn't turn it past 6 inside my house. Mason, thanks for your review. You know what you are talking about making you one of the few reliable products reviewers on KZbin .After I heard just a few notes and watching this video and that it has 2 clean channels, but gets some nice overdrive breakup when cranked. I bought this amp from Sweetwater. One of the best decisions I ever made possibly the best amp (equal to my Roland Jazz Chorus 40, which is better than the JC 120 by a long shot, at least the one I had) and I would say better than my Fender Twin Reverb that I was forced to sell and Tonemaster Twin that I returned. superb While the Twin Reverb is rated at about 85 watts, the ML Hotrod Deville is rated @ 60 watts, which from what I read is about a 3Db or less volume which is negligible because the ML Deville sounds as good or better for about $700.00 less. My only complaint about this amp is that it is heavy although is only about 4 pounds lighter Than the Fender Twin Reverb.

I had one for a couple of years and man the ML-amp is really amazing soundwise. I used to combine it with a tweed '57 Deluxe on stage and I can promise you that was a fantastic comination :) However the ML was too heavy to carry around for gigs and mostly I played/ play the blues. After selling the ML mainly because of the weight and sold the 57 Deluxe to get a Gibson ES-335, I went with a '68 Custom Vibrolux Reverb and that is also a great amp with trem and rev in both channels. Used the Vibrolux for a long time and still have it but a couple a months ago I tried a Tonemaster Deluxe...... well, so then I bought a Tonemaster Deluxe Reverb Blonde and actually that has now become my main amp. But I have to admit that sometimes I miss the "big" sound from the ML. So maybe one day a ML will appear once again among my amp-section..... It's truly the best pedal platform I have had, no doubt about that!! :)

Any chance you could list the differences between this and the standard HR Deville? In 1995 ish, Guitar Center replaced a Crate Club 50 (which was actually a great amp but kept breaking down) for me with a credit for whatever. I took the credit towards a Hot Rod DeVille. Been a great amp. I've upgraded the tubes with NOS super high end, switched to yellowjackets with EL84's, and went to a single Celestion Alnico Blue. It sounds spectacular. But I'd kinda like to put it back to stock power tubes and the 2-12 and make a great pedal platform, as I have another EL84 amp I'd like to soup up with those other parts. What changes are required to make a first gen deville into a ML version?

Hello, I just bought this amp and this video was a major push to me doing so (thank you very much for making it). Everything you said is spot on its incredibly dynamic & rich, sounded better than my twin reverb. The only thing is is that the volume is so incurably loud, after 3 or 4 I juts can't image why any clean/huge headroom amp needs to be that loud? Anyway my main question is if I use this amp and 1/12 or 2 live do you feel like it is still working and sounding its best or is playing it on a lower volume not bringing the amp to its full potential? once again thanks very much for the inspiration:)
@VertexEffectsInc

The reason I like it is it pretty much acts the same no matter where the level is set. I don't recall on this amp if it's a linear or audio taper pot on the volume control, but on most HR series amps I change the volume pot to a audio taper to give it a bit more even taper.

If it's like a regular Hot Rod Deville, put a 12AT7 in the first preamp slot in place of the 12AX7 - that really made the volume taper much more manageable on mine.

I started with a Tonemaster Deluxe Blonde (with all updates) and just didn't like it for home use. It's probably a good choice for gigging though as the sound difference is probably not as noticeable. I sold it and bought an ML and love it. I now run the ML (attenuated) with an AC15 (Alnico Blue) and the combination is wonderful at low to medium volume. I'd probably need an AC30 if I really wanted to turn up the ML, as it has some serious volume that drowns out the AC15 when I turn it up.
