This lecture is one of the best I have ever watched here. Everything from the words he use, to the body language and the voice, and better yet the blackboard writing style; all culminating to form a clear, intuitive and rich feeling. I feel honored and blessed watching this video. Thank you for this masterpiece

What a lecture. Within the lecture you have explained Bragg Gratings details with dimension explanation, how to increase the reflectivity of bragg gratings. What is the reflectivity of bragg gratings in DFB & DBR ?

Beautifully explained. However I have one question here. In an edge emitter the oscillations happen horizontally and cleaved surfaces provide reflection. In a VCSEL however, what makes the oscillations go vertical i.e. since there are no cleaved surfaces anymore, the light should just simply escape in the horizontal direction and the device should behave like a glorified LED. What prevents this from happening?

I believe the lecture starts at 45:25 (tunable DBR laser) and the when you finsh at 56:00 (say), come back to 00:00 (VCSEL starts) and watch until 45:24. Thank me later ;)

R=0.32 is due to reflection bcz of different medium at interface {(n1-n2)/(n1+n2)}^2. So without cleaved ends also there will be this much reflection at ends. Why we use cleaved ends then?

So VESCEL is analogous to SLED Whereas previous lasers DFB, DBR were analogous to ELED

Sir, I think the calculations are wrong. 0.8/4*3.2 is 625A not 500A 0.8/4*3.6 is 555 A
