Why not make vertical farms part of the grocery store? Vegies on site, not shipped around the world.

It takes time for plants to grow. That would mean that space in the grocery stores are taken up by plants that still have not matured for selling. They would lose so much money in those months just waiting.....it's like putting no good products on the shelf when ready selling products should be there to keep business going

T This can be avoided by planting fast growing plants like spinach,lettuce, beetroot so food in grocery stores isn’t such a bad idea, but don’t get me wrong not all foods can be grown in grocery stores
@goldenblooms6672
@goldenblooms6672 6 жыл бұрын
@@jessicaleclerc6667 that definitely is an idea but spinach still takes between 30-40 days and lettuce can take up to 70 days for a full head of lettuce or a few weeks for leaves. Still that is time taken away from an everyday business that can make tonnes of money. Businesses are really picky with making money and expenses. I just don't think it would be the greatest business action to take.

Vertical farming is the need for the growing urban population. Despite of being in agrarian economy like India, we have started setting up vertical farms in Maharashtra, Delhi and West Bengal and supply hydroponics and aquaponics to enthusiasts and professionals across India. These systems cannot be a replacement to conventional agriculture. Notice that most of the food grown in these systems are only leafy greens. Is not suitable for cultivating any staple food crop that is eaten routinely and in such quantities that it constitutes a dominant portion of a standard diet... It is not productive for high demand staple food crops like rice, wheat, maize, millet, sorghum, starchy tubers or root vegetables (such as potatoes, cassava, sweet potatoes, yams, or taro), pulses (dried legumes) Also, it is not profitable to cultivate any staple food crop using this method... Hence, aside from supplying the market demand for very high priced leafy greens for salads, I do not see this is a replacement to conventional agriculture.

awesome, it would be great to see efforts spent encouraging the home individuals to begin growing their own food. Industrializing only in those areas where land is limited, poor soil, also starvation high. putting such a plant within a city would destroy the current agricultural balance while still half the world lacks food. I'm very impressed with this trend and trust it does continue to catch on. Anne

better than thousands of acres succumb to deforestation for farming? Preserve local ecology, prevent extinction of animals due to loss of habitat?
@patrickd9551
@patrickd9551 4 жыл бұрын
@@francistran432 actually deforestation is performed to install palm trees for oil, or soy or any number of plants that will not ever grow indoors. Fueled by the hunger of doing everything just a bit cheaper. Nowadays cows are fed soy for cost effiency. Just growing gras and corn for your animals is cumbersome if you can pay peanuts to some third world country for supplying you with soy. Same goes for palm oil, a cheap alternative binder for example in peanutbutter. Making peanutbutter from actual peanuts is pennies more expensive, so less profit for the CEO. Actual food production like veggies, potatoes and lettuce is NOT the problem you are being led to believe. You actually need to follow the money and follow a bit of logic. Take the number 350 times more efficient per acre. HOW? That's nearly impossible unless you turn to GMO and forcing plants to go against their nature by growing faster using artificial lights and artificial nutrients. They claim more efficient water usage and they are correct. nearly all water introduced is being absorbed by the plants, instead of most water on the land draining back into nature and slowing finding their way back to aquifers or turning into rainclouds. Water doesn't just disappear magically in farming. And you are also worried about preserving local ecology. Small scale farmers with a huge variety of crops actually sustain that. Farms also live in symbiosis with the land, taking up nutrients into crops and adding back in the form of manure and compost. They also depend heavily on bacteria and insects supporting life on the smallest scale. It's these large factories that focus on a limited number of high yield high dollar crops with hardly any variety. These farms are not about the future, it's about making more money whilst depending of artificial nutrients and electricity. (two industries that aren't really eco friendly either).

How the structure is designed is a great way to grow vegetables and on the walls should have an EMF shielding to block cellphone towers.. Controlled farming environments require less chemicals like pesticides. Actual poisonous chemicals. The input is water and nutrients. If you have a problem with nutrients then there's no help for it. One of the nutrients used in traditional farming leads to massive amounts of nitrogen fertiliser making it to the oceans via rivers and is leading to gigantic dead zones in the ocean due to out of control algae growth. In a controlled environment the water is recycled. Check the channels of people who do aeroponics at home here on youtube. The result is ultra high quality, healthy, crops. Also how many greenhouse farmers in Israel uses the natural enemies of pests like small wasps and predatory beetles in their greenhouses to protect their crops. Controlling the environments crops grow in is much preferable over other alternatives like pesticides, herbicides and genetic modification to make them more resistant to pests and weather conditions. It conserves water and reduces the footprint of food production leaving more space for the natural world. It also ensures fresher produce reaches the cities. It is THE BEST way to produce large quantities (large enough to feed the world's people) of high quality crops. Nothing else comes close to it.
@NoahNobody
@NoahNobody 7 жыл бұрын
Not chemicals, but perhaps a little more heavy metals than usual (depending on the brand of hydroponic nutrients you use). Consuming heavy metals in small quantities isn't too bad though. Heavy metals are naturally occurring in regular soil. The taste is great because the plants don't run out of nutrients, and receive the exact pH nutrient solution to optimally absorb those nutrients. Shorter transit times/distances mean they don't need to be harvested before they are ripe. A lot of produce ripens off the plant, and this is the reason some shop produce doesn't taste of much.

What's not to like? I can understand your position if you are not aware of how damaging traditional farming has been and still is to the environment and the long term sustainability of the human race, but now that I have explained it to you I'm sure you will agree that aeroponics is better.

Ensec: It's because they have some ill conceived notion that food grown efficiently is somehow bad. They do not care if their food is destroying the earth, all they care about is if its grown the way they expect it to be. Ignoring the fact this is is far better for the environment than farms today. It will taste exactly the same if not better, and we can actually grow food organic this way, and GMO food can actually become less prevalent as well. You better not waste your time because people like this, can't/won't change. They are stuck to their was and simply don't care if they are wrong.
