@@ElectricityTaster bruh I case you aren't joking, the purpose of watercooling is to move the heat away from the components before dispersing it. If you have big enough radiators, it will be quieter and lower your temps. Anybody who doesn't observe these results is using an AIO or custom loop without enough mm³ of radiator.

Y use s vertical mount that is on the height of your horizontal slots. Just make sure it clears everything and if you feel comfortable you can even take a dremel to it. Or just buy the cable mod one, which has cables that can go around your horizontal bars. I did this recently alongside a psu shroud acrilic backlit panel. The temp performance depends on how the card is designed. If the card is designed to push air out the bottom or sides, then a vertical mount will likely make it run hotter. But with a card like the RTX cards, they draw air in through the fan and then out through the front edge. Thus if they were vertically mounted they would likely be more thermally efficient. That's actually something I plan on doing myself.

@zackakai5173
@zackakai5173 4 жыл бұрын
"They're all visual advantages" A very subjective claim. I really like the look of a GPU in standard configuration. The horizontal shape creates a nice contrast with the vertical lines of the RAM, IO cover, etc, and it doesn't make you look like someone who can't do a nice looking build without sacrificing functionality. All that "empty space" under the card is there so air can get underneath it and cool it.

If you would open the side panel fan window and put the GPU fan intake in front of it, it would suck out air straight from outside of your case and not the hot air that circulates in your case.
@backseatpolitician
@backseatpolitician 6 жыл бұрын
RandomFinn back in the day there were a few cases that actually had airflow and mounts for fans to blow air in the side of the case onto the area where graphics cards occupy. Most of that seemed to go away when the window kits craze started to happen, which has now led to tempered glass. I personally like tempered glass but I am curious to see if some cases manufactures will start to release cases like this again for enthusiasts who want to mount thier video cards vertically.
@Tappettava

+Backseat Politician Many small form factor pre-builts and cases have a single card/slot in taking straight from the side of the case in order to decrease temperatures. I was kind of hoping to see t here too, but unfortunately it was just installing a GPU literally against the wall.
@ArtisChronicles
@ArtisChronicles 6 жыл бұрын
Backseat Politician if I can use a filter that won't restrict airflow too much and still catches a decent amount of dust, I'd put a side mount like that to use. as they currently are, I've covered them with plastic because dust accumulates far too quickly with it open. it also keeps the airflow neater vs just being open with no fans.

The idea of vertical gpu is not only for the outlook. It is to prevent the gradual bending of the card also. This video does not prove whether the throttling is caused by the temperature itself. What about the extention? With or without the side panel temperatures? It will be an interesting matter to look into I guess.

The riser extension would not cause a decrease in performance perse'. The extra distance the volts need to travel could only be measured in nanoseconds. However, if the riser cable is unshielded, and so is audio on the motherboard, then it is possible there is cross communication interference. Either way, this most likely points to either heat or electronic interference, which are both being caused by the vertical mounting, because these issues didn't feature in the horizontal position.

@@soccerguy2433 You don't need to be a master sculptor to criticise art. You don't need to engineer a car to tell if it drives badly on the road. Considering the previous generations had thermal cutoff around 90-105 Celsius this indicates that the chips are either a lot more fragile, and they're worried about longevity or they dropped their quality standards and they start to run unstable when under higher temperatures. 70 celsius is nothing under load, you'll get there within minutes. Then it starts to throttle and you're loosing frames. That's a shitty design however you look on it.

I use the same gtx 1080 and use the cooler master maker bracket which puts the card further back in the case. I think this is just a problem with the case you are using Edit: I didnt realise how many people would reply so Im going to add something here to anwser some questions: 1. There are 2 versions of the CM Bracket, a 2 slot version which most people know about and a 4 slot version, this is to allow for single and dual gpu setups, I personally use the 4 slot for a gpu and a wifi card. i know this gets rid of 3 slots but you need to ask yourself before purchasing whether its worth it for you, I cant dictate that 2. I like others who have used this bracket have not seen a temp or clock change so the problem is the case Dimitry used where the air flow is chocked whereas the bracket puts the card further back in the case, which allows more air to pass through it 3. Some have asked what case I use for this bracket, and thats the Cooler Master MasterBox 5 Builders edition (The older version). This is an ATX case with basically everything I wanted in terms of a case, however I wouldnt suggest it over some other cases now since its a little old, there is no top 240mm radiator mounting and its all a little cramped. Its perfect for my needs, but not everyone

Two words: Signal Degradation. Any time you connect something to something else via any kind of extension, you're going to lose a bit of signal. (Even the connections from the pins on the slot to the pins on the card degrade the signal.) It might be minute, but it's going to be there. That most likely explains the core clocks lowering. Also, the motherboard is expecting to deliver power across a pin, directly into the PCB of the card, not have it travel from a pin, to a wire, to another pin, then to the PCB. The wiring introduces resistance, which is going to degrade performance all around. I know, it sounds really stupid as we're only talking about maybe one foot of ribbon cable, but add in the idea of electromagnetic interference to wires that probably aren't properly shielded (or have very minimal shielding) along with the signal degradation, and you're going to get worse performance. Tiny things like that can have pretty large impacts. If the motherboard was specifically designed with that ribbon in mind, then it shouldn't be a problem, as there would probably be some small amplifier before the PCI-E slot. If it's just something they added into the motherboard box as a freebie, then you're going to experience issues.
@wallywest2360
@wallywest2360 4 жыл бұрын
Two words: Poppycock Linus Tech connected 6 FEET worth of PCIe cables and ran their GPU on the other side of the room. Zero difference in performance. Signal loss occurs when you introduce more resistance than the transmitter can overcome. The PCIe bus has no problem going across the room, so a few inches down has zero effect. I know this a year old comment, just wanted to put that out there for people looking into it. Don't stick the face of your card right against the side panel and you'll be fine.

Having breathing holes on the side of the case is rare? I'd say the more rare case is having a vertical mount right beside a glass window that literally defeats the purpose of having the GPU vertical. Plus more and more SFF cases are coming out with options for vertical GPUs which is actually way better than having it horizontal. I enjoyed the video but when you test the GPU right next to a window what do you expect?

Im thinking it would have better thermals if there would be breathing holes while still maintaining the aesthetics of the side panels. Or even if you don't care about a transparent side panel, would having two 120mm fans blowing straight on the vertical mounted gpu improve the thermals drastically? In theory it would but i want to see it for myself.

It works in any application, just like a cable has its own resistance to electricity. With each addition of interconnect material is added, there would be added loss in power and data integrity. It doesn't matter how good the interconnecting material is. Besides, rising the vga makes it look weird standing out on its own. It breaks the flowing pattern with the rest of the hardwares.

I personally agree with your premise and conclusion, however, it appears that you assume that the GPU will be air cooled. A vertically oriented LIQUID cool gpu (particularly one that has a clear water block and your choice of good looking colored coolant) would both look amazing, as well as hide cooling tubing and perhaps pump/res if so desired. I think this has the potential to look really good and because you don't have to worry about fans, you can leave your case window on and all you see is a really nice water block on your card... you could also do some really cool laser engraving if you wanted on the top of the water block to get an even more custom feel or perhaps go with uv reactive coolant with some uv led lighting on the border of the window to really draw attention to the coolant going through the card... I think there is great potential for liquid cooled cards in the vertical orientation.

I just purchased the CoolerMaster vertical GPU bracket and installed in in my Corsair 400C (Not officially supported--I had to cut the metal on the back of the case to fit it). My temps are actually about 10C COOLER with the vertical mount option. It doesn't use that random vertical vent space on the back of the case, instead it uses the horizontal PCI card spaces so the GPU is mounted further back from the side panel with plenty of clearance for the fans to intake air. It is also positioned right in the middle of my front intake fans which ensures fresh air being supplied to the fans on the GPU.

Vertical orientation works great when case has negative pressure *and* the (filtered) intake in the side where the GPU is - which makes it basically directly take outside air. I reckon this provides cooling almost same as running without case, especially if intake has similar profile as whole card. For example, Node 304 from Fractal Design is such a compact case. Also vertical orientation great for passive cooling for ACX-like coolers (with vertical fins), allowing GPU to be cooled only by convection on low loads with fans staying off all the time.

there's actually a vertical gpu mount kit by coolermaster that you can buy. the nice thing about it is that the bracket is closer to the center of the case, giving your GPU more breathing headroom. it's just that this case's design has it wayyy to close to the side window/panel, suffocating it. all that aside though, the whole concept is just purely for aesthetics.

@@jonirojonironin5353 Hot air expands and likes to rise, it is more efficient to start from bottom, front and side. Another thing is, there is more possibility for hot air to re-enter the case if inlet and outlet are close, if your PC resides under your desk or the back is close to a wall, warm air of the rear would culminate in the back and top of the case, that warm air is likely to enter the PC through the top fans. Additionally, if you have a GPU that has a open heatsink with fans that expect warm air to be blown out by the airflow of the case (not the closed GPU's that blow warm air out their own back), hot air is more likely to be pushed down (instead of blown away, sucked out and constantly replaced), possibly creating hot pockets. Air eventually gets out, but GPU may be quite hotter than intake fans blowing towards their bottom. Better is to use silent, ball bearing or hydraulic fans with high static pressure and capability to move lots of air, additionally it is a good idea to use a dust filters (if static pressure is high, airflow won't degrade that much) so your PC's temperature doesn't degrade faster by lots of dust over months o years asorbing heat or impacting airflow.

I'm sorry but what you are showing in this video incorrect: vertical GPU brackets are NOT bad, and certainly, the temperatures ARE NOT the same. I've tested my 2080 Super XC Ultra on a ROG Crosshair VIII Hero in a Thermaltake Core P5 with its stock riser card first and then in a Sharkoon SGC1 RGB with a "cablemod-like" bracket. With the card mounted the normal way I had 75° C in the Sharkoon and 69° C in the Core P5, when I mounted the card vertically the temps changed completely: 63° C in the Sharkoon and 56° C in the Core P5, this is because the air pushed by the fans was coming out from both the sides of the GPU instead of being chocked by the motherboard. Also, the X570 chipset and the 970 EVO got way cooler dropping 10° on the chipset and 15° on the SSD, therefore I have seen only gains using the card vertically except the fact that you cannot use other PCI slots, but that's not even a drawback since I don't use any of them anyway. In conclusion despite the facts that I love your videos and I consider you the best of the HC Team, I'm sorry to say that the video is somehow misleading with incomplete information and limited testing, an update would be a good thing IMHO
@InspGadgt

There is a physical upside to vertically mounting the video card you are overlooking. High end video cards are very heavy. When mounted horizontally without any kind of support (Since most cases do not have additional supports for the video card) the weight of the card will start to warp the board and the heatsink/fan assembly starts to pull away from the board over time. I've seen this happen on 3 of my video cards now so I am looking for cases with vertically mounted cards and good cooling for the cards.

I don't think someone should do this for aesthetics or temps, but it would make sense to do it for another reason you didn't cover, pci-e stress relief. Since PCI-E cards are only braced on one side, Video cards do put a stress on the solder joints unless braced, and this is an alternative to bracing, but you HAVE to consider the cooling.

Great test again, Dimitri, these things are relevant. I was discussing exactly these scenarios on a tech forum 2 weeks ago when a new case was tested. Because I had the same idea. The cards do get less fresh air and are too close to the window. I guess that most manufacturers will not change too much for now. A fan opening on glass like seen with cases in the end 90s beginning 00s will be less aesthetic and produce more noise. So I guess some manipulation in air flow and maybe wider chassis to give the card the right amount of cooling. Alternative: Water cooling...

GPUs used to have supports at back of case to prevent stress on heavy cards, now they don't as there is no standard card length. Haven't you noticed how the back of your GPU droops down putting stress on it & motherboard, PCIe slots which are now reinforced to help support the load. Easy way to overcome problem is to lay case on it's side then all cards are mounted vertically, relieving stress, but case takes up more desk area. Rack mounted servers.

Excellent testing and review sir! It's a very interesting situation because of the lack of airflow - I'd almost wonder if the mount was further from the case wall and closer to the motherboard it that performance dip goes away.. but very good to see this kind of thing done! My biggest "Advantage" for these style set-ups is it limits the "GPU Bend" you get from having the card mounted horizontally (the Heatsink pulling the card down slowly) - This has plagued my R9 270 and my more recent 1070 (and it's only 6 months old!) - I fixed it with a bracket to support the card and keep it from drooping... but I had considered a vertical mount to mitigate the droop all together... I think I'll stick with the bracket solution for now!

There is one other thing to keep in mind, the bearings in the blower type fans are not designed for thrust loading. Though the "thrust" in the case of a horizontally mounted fan is only gravity, it will cause the bearings to loosen enough to let the impeller make contact with the shroud. I have had a BFG and two EVGA cards die with that exact failure mode. The second EVGA card got an aftermarket cooler and is still running fine.

You know, I thought about this too and came to the basic same conclusion as you, but only because of knowing that hot air or heat rises. That said, I figured since that is what goes on, the heat dissipation plates on the card can't push the air out as effectively on the connector side ( bottom now when mounted vertically ), causing heat to build up from a lack of airflow in that area. The heat just buffers and causes a warm zone around the card intake. Your test makes perfect sense to me. Though I imagine that water cooled version wouldn't be affected at all.
