At 72, I'm finally able to fulfill my passion for machining. Recently took a 12-week course, and now can use the shop as I please: quite the benefit. BTW, I am a retired aerospace structural engineer/sheet metal fabricator/military structural mechanic. Also a pretty good woodworker and hobby gunsmith. All that was lacking throughout those 5 decades of experience was access to lathes and mills. Now I am good to go and with your generous help, I am progressing quite nicely towards my first lathe or mill purchase. BTW, you crack me up. Humor is the gift that we humorous humanoids spread about the urf freely, or however much people are willing to pay in premium milky smooth stout. Carry on!

I do a lot of manufacturing in wood, plastic, and textiles and am expanding my knowledge in metal, so am doing the research into what tooling I need to build my shop, and all of your materials have been wonderful. Thanks!

Interesting and informative introduction to vertical milling. I particularly liked the safety reminder at the start of the tutorial. Many years ago I worked for a fabrication company who had a subsidiary workshop that undertook refurbishment on steam locomotives. One particular guy really loved working in this environment as he was a huge steam train enthusiast. He was so keen to start work that he went in early each day to start work on various projects. He mainly operated a large vertical boring machine that was used to rough machine castings. Unfortunately, as he was working this machine he was somehow dragged into the machine table and suffered fatal injuries. The workshop did had rules that no one was to work alone unsupervised. When the rest of the employees arrived it was too late to help this poor guy. Moral of this story is machine tools do not take prisoners! My boss at Rolls-Royce has a saying that everyone arrives in good health at the start of the shift and everybody leaves work in the same state. Wise words.

I have a small bench top mill, and when removing the milling cutter, I have found a way to replicate the ‘third hand’ effect. Being of the more ‘opulent’ in the bosoms area, I find that resting/supporting the end of the mill spanner on the said bosom, while the left hand takes care of the milling cutter work well. I knew they would come in handy one day.😇

Hello Quinn I just bought my first mill!!!! I first fell in love with Milling machines when I was at school in worksop class. Over the years Ive only had need for a Mill a few times as I didn't finish my tool making aprentership and went a different path. Ive had a lathe that is as old as me for a while now but at age 54 I'm a maker again and finally I have a Mill. It is used and came with nothing but a damaged spindle. It took me a day to repair the spindle but now its fixed and I'm Milling. Your tutorial is brilliant. Thank you. Sadly I can't do the patron thing just yet. (hay Ive got a Mill to support!) Please know you have fans down here in Australia.

I set up a small machine shop in my garage when I retired and I bought a Precision Matthews 835 mill (their tiniest knee mill). I got the same vise that you have and that rotating base didn't last a week before I chucked it onto a bottom shelf where I never bend over and look at. Can't put a high enough price on that vertical real estate. I just bought a Phase II rotary table and it is really tight now.

You said it! After a couple of years, I finally got an operation this week where the swivel base might come in handy, but I may use the rotary table instead to avoid disturbing my vise. 😁

@Quinn Great tutorials! @16:20 you clearly need 3 hands to loosen the drawbar and extract the tool. And you grip the drawbar and spindle from opposite ends, yet the top of your spindle has 2 flats you could use. Tormach has a spring hinged fork at the top that you flip down to lock the spindle. With that, you need only one hand to loosen the drawbar. For me, left hand grips tool while right loosens drawbar and taps top of drawbar with plastic hammer releasing tool into left hand. You could do a project to make a similar fork for the top of your spindle column. You wouldn’t have to grow a third hand for tool changes! But you would need an interlock to keep from starting the machine if the fork is locking the spindle! The Tormach has an interlocked door enclosing the drawbar that cannot be closed with the fork in the down position.

my milling machine came with the same stupid square nut for the drawbar and my technique was similar except i made a knob that press fits over the square with a couple M5 grub screws to lock it in place. the knob can be easily spun by hand for quickly changing collets and a 14 mm hex on the top so i can use the same wrench that i use for my vise and t slot clamp set. so the only 2 tools that need a permanent home at the mill are the 14mm wrench and the spanner to hold the spindle.

Hi Quinn, I have been through the complete mill series as well as the lathe series. I recently purchased my lathe and my mill from PM. I am trying to surface off the top of a 15" chunk of railroad iron. It has been used so I imagine it is work hardened pretty well. Based on what I looked up, it is a medium carbon steel. I tried to surface the first couple hundred thousands with a new Carbide 5 insert cutter 2" wide. I tried a lot of different speeds and feeds for this but it seemed to run best at about 700 RPM and a pretty slow feed rate. I don't know how to measure the feed rate as I am using an X power feed and was on just a little above the slowest. The finish is like a mirror but I think I must have dulled the cutters since it started making a bunch of sparks as it cut. I stopped and then went through another dozen videos on speeds and feeds. By the way, by DOC was just .020 per pass. Everything I have calculated based on so many different ideas was to be about 500 RPM and a deeper cut. I can turn my inserts over and finish the remaining portion but would like to get your thoughts on depth of cut, RPM, and how fast to set the feed rate. Is there a way to read the feed rate from the DRO? It is certainly changing the X axis as it goes.

I actually do some milling on an old floor drill press. It's a very sturdy Swedish Arboga E100 from the 50's or so, 1.8 m (6') high, weighing around 130 kilos (~300 lbs) plus the milling table at around 65 kgs (150 lbs). I don't have a drawbar but have modified a MT3 milling collet so that it doesn't fall out. I obviously can't take very deep cuts but 0.2-.25 mm (8-10 thou) in steel works. I most likely can't do anything that requires really high precision but it'll do for now. Also, the lower bearing for the quill is a conical roller bearing and the upper a ball bearing, so it _should_ be able to take quite a bit of sideways load. Oh, almost forgot: Thank you for these really good tutorials!

When I was in grade nine I had a machine shop teacher that we all made fun of. He was a 70 something, Italian man that had done his apprenticeship in Italy. When he came to the school he had a lathe and a drill press; from that he built every other machine in the shop. As I said, we made fun of him, and it wasn’t until it was too late that I found out that he was a tool and die maker who could speak seven languages. What we could have learnt! His first assignment was to have us take a piece of steel rod and file a flat reference face with the final objective being to create a square piece of stock. I can still hear him every time I pick up a file “You filing like dis.” and he would demonstrate. He would check our work and invariably he would say “Santo nome, boys, boys boys.” . At this point he would take our piece over to the grinder and true it up; all we had to do is put a couple of file strokes on it and we would be done. But no, we would file away until the piece was cupped and twisted “Santo nome!” Eventually we got to go on the lathe and we made a bottle opener and a plumb bob. I still have my plumb bob. I have had it for 50 years and when I look at it I think of the missed opportunity, but also the skills that Brother Colleto gave us. Quinn, thank you for your excellent videos, I am grateful for the opportunity to revisit my days in Brother Colleto’s machine shop and see what it is that he was trying to teach us. Big shoes to fill, but you do it admirably. Now all you have to do is work on your Italian, Russian, German, French, Spanish, Swiss, and Dutch, English you have.

Great job, love this series and all your videos. Had a good chuckle over Step One in drawbar tool technique. One suggestion, try a 3/8" breaker bar instead of a ratchet... less fiddly for the KISS crowd. Invariably, when I pick up a ratchet, it's set for the wrong direction. I coated the handle of mine with Plasti-dip, so once the tension is off of the drawbar, it's super simple to just move the breaker vertical and twirl it in your fingers to thread/unthread the drawbar from the collet. As a bonus, the rubber coated handle is the perfect weight for tapping the drawbar to release the end mill from the collet without having to reach for a hammer. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for watching! I chose the ratchet specifically because it is much quicker for me. The draw bar on this mill is very fiddly and needs a lot of turns. The ratchet is quick, and it’s the SnapOn style with the thumb switch to change direction, so very quick for me there as well. To each their own though!

Another good video. Zero backlash on a worm gear? Come on Quinn!😂😂 It sucks that everything you say on KZbin gets scrutinized. 😜 Love the fact that you provide lots of really good info at the same time not taking yourself too seriously.

I've had my mill for over a year, and I legitimately had no idea how to pop the jacobs chuck out, so i've been using that to hold everything. I've gotten away with that. But I appreciate these videos immensely.

This would have been a great video for me to have watched when I was starting out. I probably made most of the errors you mentioned. In my old age I prefer learning with words over experience.

THANK YOU, FOR ALL OF YOUR HELPFUL, AND INFORMATIVE VIDEOS! FYI: I HAVE A "TEKNATOOL NOVA COMET 2, WOOD LATHE, (WITH 3, & 4 JAW CHUCKS), THAT I'M CONSIDERING TRYING TO COME UP WITH A WAY TO ATTACH A COMBINATION OF "LINEAR SLIDE STAGES, (TO MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO SECURELY HOLD SOME TYPE OF TOOL HOLDER, AND, TO ENABLE MICRO ADJUSTABLE MANUAL FEED, IN TWO AXIS, AND, I HOPE TO ACHIEVE ENOUGH PRECISION TO BE ABLE TO TURN SOFT METALS, BRASS, BRONZE, ALUMINUM, PLASTICS, AND MILD STEEL, (TAKING GENTLE CUTS, BY MANUAL ADJUSTMENTS). I ALSO HAVE THEIR BENCHTOP DRILL BRESS. WHICH HAS A A MT2 SPINDLE. I'D LIKE TO BE ABLE TO SECURE A MT2 TO ER11, OR ER25 COLLET HOLDER, AND TO BE ABLE TO DO LIGHT MILLING CUTS, SAFELY. ....DO YOU HAVE ANY THOUGHTS ON THESE GOALS?...
